If an app, document workflow, or upload form rejects a .webp file, decode the still image and save a new file as PNG or JPEG. For PNG, Google’s command-line decoder uses dwebp input.webp -o output.png. For JPEG, ImageMagick uses magick input.webp output.jpg when its WebP delegate is available. Renaming .webp to .jpg or .png does not convert the data.
How to Convert WebP to JPG or PNG
Choose the output based on what the destination needs. PNG is the safer choice for transparent artwork, logos, screenshots, or when you want to avoid another lossy encoding step. JPEG (also called JPG) is appropriate when the receiving service specifically requires JPEG and the image can be opaque. A WebP may already be lossy, so no conversion can restore detail discarded when the original WebP was encoded.
| Need | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Keep transparent pixels | PNG | PNG supports alpha; JPEG does not. |
| Meet a JPEG-only upload requirement | JPG/JPEG | Export as an opaque image and choose a background for transparent areas. |
| Avoid another lossy output stage | PNG | PNG is lossless, although it cannot recover detail already lost in a lossy WebP. |
| Small photographic upload where JPEG is required | JPG/JPEG | Use the encoder’s quality controls and inspect the result. |
How to convert WebP to PNG
Use Google’s dwebp command
The official libwebp utility decodes a still WebP to PNG with one command:
dwebp input.webp -o output.png
PNG is dwebp‘s default output. The command can also write PAM, PPM, or PGM, but PAM is the alternative that retains alpha; PPM discards it. See Google’s WebP getting-started guide and the dwebp reference for the utility’s options.

dwebp is for still images. Google’s reference states, “Animated WebP files are not supported.” Use an animation-capable editor or converter when the source contains multiple frames.
How to convert WebP to JPG
Use ImageMagick
ImageMagick’s general conversion program accepts an input and output filename. For a WebP-to-JPEG conversion, run:
magick input.webp output.jpg
This is the direct application of ImageMagick’s documented format-conversion syntax. WebP reading and writing depend on a build with the WebP delegate listed in ImageMagick’s format table.

- Install ImageMagick from a source appropriate for your operating system.
- Check that the installed build reports WebP support; if it cannot read WebP, install a build that includes the delegate.
- Run
magick input.webp output.jpg. - Open the JPEG and inspect edges, text, and any formerly transparent areas.
JPEG has no alpha channel. If the WebP has transparent pixels, the converter must flatten them against a background. If the result has an unexpected white, black, or checkerboard-looking area, export the original as PNG instead or deliberately set the background color in your image tool before writing JPEG.

For a one-off file, open the WebP in an editor that supports WebP, choose its Export or Save As command, select PNG or JPEG, and save under a new filename. Application names, menu labels, and built-in WebP support vary by operating system and version, so verify the current documentation for the editor you use rather than relying on a platform-specific path.
- Keep the original WebP until you have checked the converted file.
- Use PNG when the checkerboard transparency pattern or soft edges must remain transparent.
- For JPEG, choose an intentional background and review the export quality setting.
- Reopen the output with a second viewer or the destination application to catch compatibility problems early.
What if the WebP is animated?
The WebP standard allows either a still image or an animation: “A WebP file contains either a still image (that is, an encoded matrix of pixels) or an animation.” A still-image decoder such as dwebp will not process the animated case. Use an editor or converter that explicitly supports animated WebP and decide whether you need an animated output, a video, or one selected frame. If you only need a single frame, confirm which frame the tool exports; animation handling is not interchangeable between applications.

Quality, transparency, and file-size trade-offs
Conversion cannot restore lost detail
WebP supports both lossy and lossless encoding, alpha transparency, and animation, as described in RFC 9649. If the source was lossy, exporting it as PNG preserves the pixels you currently have but does not recreate the original detail. Exporting to JPEG can introduce another lossy generation, with the visible effect depending on the encoder and quality setting.
Published WebP comparisons are not conversion predictions
Google’s overview says WebP lossless images are 26% smaller than PNG in its comparison, and that WebP lossy images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. Google’s FAQ describes about 30% more compression than JPEG on average, attributing that comparison to its WebP Lossy Study. These are format-level comparisons from Google, not a promise about the size of your converted file and not an estimate of what will happen when converting WebP back to JPG or PNG. See the WebP overview and WebP FAQ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBatch conversion without risking your originals
Batch work is useful for a directory of still images. Preserve the source files, test several representative images first (including one with transparency), and inspect the outputs before deleting anything. dwebp can be scripted for PNG output, and ImageMagick has shell and batch facilities for format conversion, but the exact loop syntax depends on your shell and operating system. Do not assume a command written for one shell is portable to another. Animated files require a separate, animation-capable workflow.

If the file you need is a webpage screenshot rather than a downloaded asset, ScreenshotNeo can fetch a clean screenshot through one request; you can then save or convert that image for the system that needs JPG or PNG. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Use the API examples in the ScreenshotNeo documentation:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
After downloading shot.webp, apply dwebp shot.webp -o shot.png or magick shot.webp shot.jpg according to the destination’s requirements. ScreenshotNeo includes every feature on every plan: full-page capture with lazy images loaded, element selection, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, device and viewport controls, PDF capture, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, caching with a chosen TTL, and more. Troubleshooting conversion errors
“Unable to open” or an unknown WebP format
Your ImageMagick build may lack its WebP delegate, or the file may not actually be WebP despite its extension. Install a build with WebP read support, verify the file from its original source, and try the official dwebp utility for a still image.

The output is black, white, or has a solid background
That usually reflects alpha being flattened for JPEG. JPEG cannot carry transparency. Re-export as PNG, or choose the intended background before creating the JPG.
The converted image looks softer
The source may already contain lossy compression, and JPEG can add another lossy generation. Use PNG when the destination accepts it, avoid repeated re-exports, and keep the original WebP as your master.
Only the first frame appears, or conversion fails on an animation
The input is likely animated. dwebp does not support animated WebP; use a tool that documents animation support and confirm whether it exports frames, a video, or a single selected frame.
The output file exists but another app rejects it
Confirm that the file is genuinely encoded as PNG or JPEG, not merely renamed. Open it independently, check the extension matches the encoded format, and try a standard color mode if the destination has strict requirements.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Identify whether the WebP is still or animated.
- Choose PNG for transparency or to avoid another lossy output stage.
- Choose JPEG only when an opaque image and JPEG compatibility are required.
- Use
dwebpfor a repeatable still-image PNG workflow. - Use ImageMagick with WebP delegate support for JPEG or general conversion.
- Never overwrite the original until the new file has been opened and accepted by its destination.
