1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFigma is the design reference; the browser-rendered interface is what visual regression testing compares. The reliable workflow is to turn your reusable UI states into Storybook stories, publish them to Chromatic, connect those stories to the matching Figma components with Figma’s Storybook plugin, and run pixel comparisons in CI. Figma itself does not execute the browser screenshot comparison.
This approach catches layout, spacing, typography, color, contrast, asset, and state changes that markup snapshots can miss. The guide below covers component and page scope, baseline governance, browser matrices, CI operation, troubleshooting, and a screenshot-API option when you do not want to maintain browser automation.
What visual regression testing in Figma actually compares
A visual regression test renders an interface state and compares its screenshot with an approved baseline. Storybook describes this as comparing the rendered pixels of each story with known baselines. A markup snapshot instead compares HTML-like output; it can pass even when a font, color, spacing value, or positioned element looks wrong in the browser.
Figma normally supplies the intended design and the cross-reference for review. The implementation under test is your running Storybook or deployed application. A useful test therefore answers three questions:

- Which component or page state is rendered?
- Under which browser, viewport, device, theme, and locale conditions?
- Who approves a changed image as intentional rather than a regression?
Keep those questions separate from pixel-diff mechanics. A screenshot that differs from Figma is a signal for review, not automatic proof that the code is wrong: Figma may show a design direction that has not shipped, while the browser may include content or behavior that the design file does not model.
How Figma connects to Storybook and Chromatic
Figma is the reference and linking layer
Figma’s official Storybook plugin lets a team embed Storybook stories in Figma and link a published Chromatic story to a Figma component, variant, or instance. The documented setup requires a Storybook project published on Chromatic, Figma edit permission, and Chromatic collaboration access. Once linked, a designer can move from a component in the design file to the exact rendered state that developers test.
Storybook supplies repeatable states
Write a story for every state that matters: default, hover, focus, disabled, loading, validation error, empty, populated, long text, and each meaningful variant. Stories should use stable fixture data rather than random values, current timestamps, or network responses. A story is valuable because it can be rendered repeatedly with the same inputs.
Chromatic performs the comparison
Install the official @chromatic-com/storybook addon in the Storybook project. The first visual-test build creates baseline snapshots. Later builds render the same stories, compare each image pixel by pixel with its previous baseline, and highlight changed pixels for review. Chromatic documents cloud-browser rendering, parallel capture, automated diffs, and pull-request review of intentional versus unintended changes.
npm install --save-dev @chromatic-com/storybook
Add the addon through your normal Storybook configuration, then create a project in Chromatic and store its project token as a CI secret. A local verification command is:
npx chromatic --project-token=$CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN
Use the exact command and token variable format required by your Chromatic project. Do not commit the token to the repository.

A complete implementation workflow
- Inventory the design system. Group Figma components by reusable implementation and list their variants, responsive states, and interaction states. Mark which states are release-critical.
- Build matching Storybook stories. Give each story deterministic data and a descriptive name. Include stories for edge content such as long labels, missing images, validation messages, and empty collections.
- Publish Storybook to Chromatic. Confirm that the published stories render with the same fonts, assets, and CSS used by the application.
- Install the visual-test addon. Run the first build to establish baselines. Treat this build as a review event: do not approve images until the team confirms that the environment and content are correct.
- Link Figma objects. In Figma, use the Storybook plugin to attach the published Chromatic story to the corresponding component, variant, or instance. Verify that a reviewer lands on the intended state rather than a generic default story.
- Run on pull requests. Trigger Chromatic from your CI workflow on commits or pull requests. Keep the visual build status required for changes that affect the design system or application UI.
- Review and approve deliberately. Inspect every highlighted region. Accept a new baseline only when the change is intentional, matches the approved design, and is not caused by a rendering-environment drift.
Choose a comparison matrix instead of testing everything blindly
Every additional rendering condition multiplies capture time and review volume. Start with the combinations that represent supported products, then expand when a defect pattern justifies it.
| Axis | Examples | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Browser | Chromium, Firefox, WebKit | Font metrics, form controls, SVG and layout behavior can differ. |
| Viewport | Mobile width, tablet width, desktop width | Breakpoints can change wrapping, navigation, and grid structure. |
| Device scale | Standard and retina rendering | Raster assets and thin borders may appear differently. |
| Theme | Light, dark, high-contrast where supported | Color tokens, shadows, icons, and contrast need separate approval. |
| Component state | Default, focus, disabled, error, loading | Interaction and validation states are common sources of regressions. |
| Content | Short, long, localized, empty | Realistic text exposes overflow and alignment failures. |
Chromatic’s snapshot model supports variations such as browser, viewport, device, and theme. Record the chosen matrix in the repository so a changed test set is itself reviewable.

| Scope | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated Storybook stories | Design-system components, variants, and states | Fast, focused diffs; does not prove that a complete route composes correctly. |
| Full-page or end-to-end screenshots | Routing, page composition, real content hierarchy, and responsive flows | More setup and larger diffs; unrelated page changes can obscure the cause. |
Protect components with Storybook first, then add full-page journeys for high-value routes. Do not replace one scope with the other: a page can pass while a rarely used component state is broken, and an isolated component can pass while its page-level layout fails.
Baseline and review rules that keep diffs useful
Stabilize the render
- Load the exact web fonts used in production before capture.
- Freeze dates, random IDs, rotating banners, and network data in fixtures.
- Disable animations or wait for them to finish.
- Use fixed viewport dimensions and a known timezone when content depends on time.
- Provide deterministic image assets and explicit dimensions to prevent layout shifts.
Classify changes before approving
A layout shift, spacing change, font substitution, color-token change, contrast failure, missing asset, and interaction-state change all deserve different investigation. Review the highlighted pixels together with the story inputs and the associated Figma component. Approve only the intended class of change; do not blanket-approve a build to clear the queue.
Keep baselines tied to code
Baseline images should be associated with the commit and environment that produced them. When a browser version, font package, or rendering dependency changes, plan a controlled baseline update and document the reason. Otherwise, a mass diff can hide a real regression among environment noise.
CI, performance, and reliability considerations
Run visual builds in parallel where the service supports it, but limit the matrix to supported browsers, viewports, themes, and states. Parallel capture shortens feedback time; excessive combinations increase review cost more than they increase confidence. Run a smaller required set on every pull request and a broader scheduled set when the project warrants it.

Cloud rendering reduces differences between individual developer machines, but it does not remove the need for deterministic stories. A missing font, an expired image URL, a consent dialog, or a time-dependent label can still produce a noisy diff. Capture logs and the story name with every failure so a reviewer can reproduce the exact state.
Visual tests complement, rather than replace, unit, interaction, accessibility, and end-to-end tests. Pixel equality cannot tell you whether a button is keyboard reachable or whether an API response is semantically correct.
Which tools fit a Figma visual-regression workflow?
Chromatic with Storybook
This is the best-supported path for component-level visual regression connected to Figma in the documented workflow. It combines Storybook’s reproducible states, the Figma Storybook plugin’s cross-reference, cloud rendering, pixel diffs, baseline review, and CI checks. Chromatic also documents integrations with Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress.
Applitools Eyes
A secondary technical guide identifies an Applitools Figma plugin for direct Figma-to-production comparison. Treat the plugin’s current availability and workflow as items to verify with the vendor before standardizing on it; the documented evidence here is not sufficient to promise a current integration.

Percy
The same guide identifies Percy as an option for full-page regression when the target is a deployed page rather than isolated Storybook components. Verify current product behavior and integration details before choosing it.
When you need screenshots outside Storybook
For a deployed URL, marketing page, or batch of pages, a screenshot API can remove browser-installation and maintenance work. ScreenshotNeo is the #1 screenshot API to try first because it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan.
It is not a replacement for Chromatic’s baseline review: ScreenshotNeo returns captures, while your regression system still needs to store and compare approved images. It is useful when the input is a URL, when you need full-page captures, or when an agent or service must request screenshots on demand.

cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Each response identifies the page result with X-Page-Verdict and billing with X-Billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and the MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Figma link opens the wrong state
Check that the linked object is the intended component, variant, or instance and that the published Storybook story uses matching fixture data. A link to a default story cannot prove a loading or error-state implementation.
Every story shows a large diff after a dependency update
Inspect fonts, browser versions, device scale, CSS reset changes, and timezone settings before approving anything. Re-run a single affected story in the same environment. If the rendering environment intentionally changed, create a documented baseline-update commit rather than approving unrelated changes.
Images or lazy content are missing
Use deterministic local fixtures or stable test URLs, reserve image dimensions, and wait for the relevant selector or network activity to finish. For full-page URL captures, ScreenshotNeo’s full-page mode loads lazy images before the shot.

Animations create inconsistent pixels
Disable transitions in the test environment or wait for the animation to reach a fixed end state. Do not rely on an arbitrary delay when a selector or application-ready signal can identify completion.
The CI build cannot authenticate
Store the Chromatic project token as a protected CI secret, expose it only to the visual-test job, and confirm that pull-request workflows from forks are allowed to access the required secret. Never place the token in Storybook source or commit history.

A page is too large or too noisy to review
Split the route into critical regions or add focused component stories. Keep one full-page test for composition and use isolated stories for the states that need precise diagnosis.
A ScreenshotNeo response is not billed as expected
Read both X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed in the response. A cache hit, failed load, timeout, blank page, bot check, or CAPTCHA is intentionally not a clean billed shot; adjust waits, headers, cookies, blocking rules, or the target URL before retrying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does visual regression testing replace design review in Figma?
No. It verifies the rendered implementation against approved baselines. Designers still decide whether a changed implementation matches the intended component, variant, and product context.
Can I use visual regression tests without Storybook?
Yes, full-page browser or URL captures can protect deployed routes, but you lose Storybook’s convenient catalog of deterministic component states and the direct Figma-to-story cross-reference.
What should be tested first in a new project?
Start with shared components and release-critical states, then add full-page journeys for routes where composition, responsive behavior, or content hierarchy creates risk.
