Best Dating Apps in Australia (2026): Which One Fits Your Goals?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best dating app in Australia in 2026. The right choice depends on whether you want a relationship, broader discovery, search-based matching, a particular community, and how much control you need over privacy and paid contact. Hinge has the clearest positioning for people interested in longer-term relationships; Tinder offers the broadest stated range of connection types; and RSVP is distinctive for search filters and a paid message-credit model. Bumble, Grindr, Plenty of Fish and eHarmony are also significant services, but the available Australian evidence does not support a precise current ranking of them.

This guide compares the services using Australian regulator and government information, separates documented features from company claims, and shows how to check safety and subscription terms before you commit.

Quick comparison of dating apps in Australia

App Who it may suit How discovery or contact works Documented free and paid details Safety or privacy points to check
Tinder People open to casual, serious or undecided connections Swipe-based discovery, with modes and goals listed by Tinder Free to download; the source does not establish that every feature is free Block, unmatch, report, Share My Date, chat safety prompts and Photo Verification are listed by Tinder
Hinge People prioritising longer-term relationships Profiles use photos or videos and prompts; you can like a specific item and comment Free users: up to eight likes per day and one rose per week. Paid options include advanced filters, unlimited likes and boosts Review profile visibility, location exposure, reporting and what verification actually proves
RSVP People who prefer search filters and a website-plus-app format Suggested matches and Discover filters for age, location, religion, political views, children and other choices An initial message requires a paid stamp or a subscription including stamps; replies are free. Subscription may provide more visibility control Check who can see your profile and the cost and expiry of stamps
Bumble Users considering a mainstream alternative Current Australian mechanics and free limits were not established in the cited material Not stated in the cited material; verify in the Australian app Check first-contact rules, location settings, block/report tools and subscription renewal
Grindr Adults seeking a mainstream service serving its own community Current Australian discovery details were not established in the cited material Not stated in the cited material Check precise-location controls, profile visibility, messaging permissions and reporting
Plenty of Fish Users considering a long-running mainstream service Current Australian mechanics were not established in the cited material Not stated in the cited material Inspect privacy, contact controls and full subscription terms
eHarmony People considering a relationship-focused service Current Australian matching details were not established in the cited material Check the complete minimum cost, term, renewal and cancellation wording before paying The ACCC reported a Federal Court finding about misleading subscription disclosures for the applicable period

The table is a decision aid, not a popularity league table. A 2023 Australian government study reported participant use of Tinder (27%), Bumble (21%), Grindr (8%), Hinge (6%), eHarmony (6%) and Plenty of Fish (2%). Those figures came from 24 online focus groups involving 102 Australians aged 13–74 and two adult interviews; they are not representative 2026 market shares.

1. Tinder: the broadest stated range of connection goals

Tinder’s Australian-facing service says it supports casual, serious or undecided connections. Its listed features include Double Date, Music Mode, Astrology Mode, Passport, Relationship Goals and Photo Verification. Tinder also says it is available in 190 countries and has made more than 55 billion matches; those are Tinder’s own global claims, not an independently audited Australian ranking.

Tinder is a sensible first choice if you want a large, general-purpose discovery experience and do not want to define your relationship goal narrowly at signup. The trade-off is that a broad pool can require more filtering and clearer conversations about intentions.

Free use, contact and safety

Tinder says the app is free to download. That statement does not mean every mode, visibility option or enhancement is free, so inspect the in-app plan screen before assuming a feature has no charge. The Australian page lists blocking, unmatching, reporting, Share My Date and chat safety prompts. Photo Verification can add a signal that a profile photo passed the service’s process, but verification is not proof of a person’s identity.

2. Hinge: the clearest relationship-focused positioning

Australia’s eSafety guidance describes Hinge as designed for people interested in longer-term relationships. Profiles combine photos or videos with written prompts. Instead of only approving a whole profile, you can like a particular photo or prompt and add a comment, giving an opening that is more specific than a bare match.

Free limits and paid upgrades

According to eSafety, free users can send up to eight likes per day and one rose per week. Paid in-app options include advanced filters, unlimited likes and boosts. These limits and features can change, so confirm the current Australian app version and price before relying on them.

Hinge may fit you best when you are willing to write thoughtful prompts and respond to details in another person’s profile. It is less suitable if you want anonymous browsing or a completely search-driven directory; check its current visibility controls before creating a profile.

3. RSVP: search filters with paid initial messages

RSVP combines a dating website and app with suggested matches and a Discover function. eSafety says Discover can filter by age, location, religion, political views, children and other choices. That makes RSVP useful for people who want to set explicit criteria instead of relying mainly on swiping.

Understand stamps before you message

Starting an initial message requires a paid stamp or a subscription that includes stamps. Replies are free. A subscription can also provide more control over profile visibility, according to eSafety. Do not treat RSVP as entirely free simply because browsing or replying costs nothing: calculate how many new conversations you expect to start and what the required stamps or subscription will cost.

4. Bumble: verify the current Australian experience

Bumble appears in eSafety’s service guidance and in the 2023 government participant study, but the cited material does not establish a complete 2026 Australian feature, pricing or free-limit comparison. That is important: do not assume rules, first-contact mechanics or paid tiers from an older review or another country still apply.

What to check in the app

  • Who can initiate contact and how long a connection remains actionable.
  • Whether approximate location can replace precise location.
  • Where block and report controls appear in a profile and conversation.
  • The minimum subscription term, automatic renewal and cancellation path.

5. Grindr: assess location and visibility controls carefully

Grindr is included in the Australian service coverage and the 2023 participant study. The available evidence here does not establish its current Australian feature set, prices or free limits, so a precise “best for” label would overstate what is known.

For any location-oriented service, pay particular attention to whether distance or precise location is exposed, who can contact you, and how quickly you can block or report an account. Read the privacy policy and community rules before adding identifying details to a public profile.

6. Plenty of Fish: a mainstream option without a documented 2026 comparison

Plenty of Fish was among the services represented in the government study and is covered by the voluntary industry code through Match Group. The cited material does not provide a current Australian breakdown of its matching system, paid plans or limits. Treat it as an option to investigate rather than a documented winner.

Before paying, record the price shown at checkout, the complete minimum commitment and the renewal date. Test the report, block and privacy controls while your account is still new, when changing plans is easiest.

7. eHarmony: read every subscription disclosure

eHarmony appears in the government study and is associated with the voluntary Online Dating Code through its corporate group. On 25 August 2026, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reported that the Federal Court found eHarmony had breached Australian Consumer Law through misleading conduct concerning free dating, automatic renewal, minimum membership duration, early cancellation and subscription pricing.

The reported findings concerned the applicable conduct and period; they do not establish that every current checkout flow repeats it. The ACCC said penalties, consumer redress and other orders would be decided later. When considering eHarmony now, look for one clearly stated minimum total cost, the exact term, renewal conditions and the cancellation process. A monthly or weekly “from” figure is not enough to understand the commitment.

How to choose an app for your situation

If you want a longer-term relationship

Start with Hinge’s explicit longer-term positioning and prompt-based profiles. Compare it with RSVP if detailed filters matter more to you than commenting on profile prompts. Keep expectations realistic: no app guarantees compatibility or a relationship.

If you want broad discovery or are undecided

Tinder’s own description covers casual, serious and undecided connections. Use Relationship Goals and your profile text to state what you are looking for, then use unmatch and report tools when a conversation crosses your boundaries.

If filtering is more important than swiping

RSVP’s Discover filters are the clearest documented fit. Budget for the stamp required to start each new conversation and check whether a subscription changes profile visibility.

If privacy is your deciding factor

Compare services on seven concrete questions: who sees your profile; who can message; whether location is approximate; where block and report controls are; what verification proves; what data policies permit; and the full paid commitment. eSafety recommends reviewing features and privacy settings before signup.

Are dating apps safe in Australia?

No service can remove all risk. The 2023 government study reported that participants’ use of social media and dating apps was increasing while their feelings of safety were not. It also found uneven control features and limited awareness beyond blocking and reporting.

Use the controls before you need them

  • Keep your profile free of your workplace, home address, routine and other details that identify where you are.
  • Use in-app messaging until you have enough confidence to share another contact method.
  • Check location, visibility and discoverability settings after every major app update.
  • Block and report accounts that pressure, threaten, impersonate or request money.
  • For a first meeting, tell a trusted person where you will be, use Share My Date when available, meet publicly and arrange your own transport.

Interpret verification correctly

Photo matching or a verification badge can show that an account completed a platform process. eSafety cautions that photo matching does not establish the person’s identity. Treat it as one signal, not proof that a profile is genuine or safe.

What the Online Dating Code does—and does not—mean

Services including Match Group (Tinder, Hinge, Plenty of Fish and others), Bumble, Grindr, Spark and ParshipMeet Group (including eHarmony) have joined the Voluntary Online Dating Code. It calls for reporting systems for potential online harm, action on incidents and a published self-assessed compliance rating. eSafety does not enforce the code; an independent industry-formed committee oversees it. Participation is therefore one factor to check, not a government safety certification.

Before you pay: a five-minute subscription check

  1. Open the Australian checkout screen, not a search-result price or overseas page.
  2. Write down the minimum total cost, term, instalment schedule and any “from” qualification.
  3. Confirm whether the plan renews automatically and on what date.
  4. Find the cancellation route and whether cancelling stops renewal or also ends current access.
  5. Save the confirmation email and receipt so you can challenge an unexpected charge.

Prices and promotions can vary by plan, age, platform, location and checkout date. Current like-for-like Australian prices were not established for all services here, so a monthly equivalent should never be treated as the full cost.
