Using IP Geolocation with Google Maps: What It Can—and Can’t—Locate

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Maps can display coordinates estimated from an IP address, but that estimate is usually too rough to identify a person’s precise position. Google’s Geolocation API can fall back to the IP address of the request when it cannot geolocate supplied Wi-Fi or cell-tower signals and considerIp is enabled. The result includes an uncertainty radius. For a web feature that genuinely needs the visitor’s current position, ask for permission with the browser’s Geolocation API, then show the returned coordinates on a Google Map.

One distinction matters: Google’s IP fallback estimates the location associated with the API request; it does not accept an arbitrary visitor IP as a coordinate lookup input. If your server makes the request, the server’s network address may be the one Google sees. Do not present that result as the visitor’s device location.

Choose IP estimation or browser geolocation

These methods answer different questions. IP geolocation can provide a coarse network-area estimate without asking for device-location permission. Browser geolocation asks the user to approve access to the device’s location and can return a more useful current position when location services are available.

Need Better fit Important limitation
Country, broad region, language, or routing default IP-based estimate May be thousands of meters from the device; VPNs, carrier routing, and network configuration can further separate network location from physical location.
Nearby places, current position, or navigation Browser/device geolocation Requires a secure browser context and user permission; the user can deny permission or location services can fail.
Show a location visually Google Maps JavaScript API, using either method’s coordinates A map pin does not make an imprecise estimate precise. Display uncertainty where it affects the user.

Google’s Maps JavaScript geolocation guide cautions that IP-based detection may provide only a rough estimate. Google’s Geolocation API documentation describes IP fallback as the least accurate method. Treat it as an estimate, not a tracking or address-finding method.

What Google’s IP fallback does

Google’s Geolocation API can estimate location from the request’s IP address if considerIp is true and no Wi-Fi or cell-tower signals can be geolocated. Its response provides latitude, longitude, and an accuracy value: a radius, in meters, around the returned point within which the API estimates the device is located. It is an uncertainty radius, not a precision score or a guarantee that the device lies within the circle.

  • IP fallback: Google says the uncertainty radius can reach thousands of meters.
  • Two or more Wi-Fi access points: Google documents a typical radius of about 20 meters.
  • Macro-cell estimates: Commonly hundreds of meters, and potentially several thousand meters in sparse coverage.

These are documented typical ranges, not promises for an individual request. Google’s Geolocation API documentation, current at 2026 access, describes them; actual results depend on the available signals and network conditions.

Do not pass a visitor’s IP in a made-up request field. The documented IP behavior estimates the IP address associated with the API request; it is not a general IP-to-coordinate lookup endpoint. When a backend server calls Google, the request can appear to come from that server’s egress address rather than from the visitor. Nor should you put an unrestricted web-service API key in browser code: Google’s Maps Platform security guidance says web-service keys are not expected to be publicly exposed to unauthorized users, applications, or devices.

If the product requirement is specifically “estimate this visitor’s network region,” use a design and provider that explicitly supports looking up the visitor IP, and verify its privacy, key-security, and data-retention terms. The Google IP fallback described above is not a substitute for that capability. If the requirement is the user’s current position, use the permission-based browser flow below.

Show the user-approved position on a Google Map

The following is a minimal browser implementation. Replace YOUR_MAPS_JAVASCRIPT_API_KEY with a Maps JavaScript API key restricted to your website’s allowed referrers and the APIs your application needs. Serve the page over HTTPS (localhost is generally treated as a secure development context). The user starts the request by selecting the button, after your interface explains why location is needed.

  1. Create a page with a map container, a button, and a status area.
  2. Load the Maps JavaScript API with your restricted key and the geometry library, which the example uses to draw the reported accuracy circle.
  3. Call navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition() only after the user’s action.
  4. Center the map on the returned coordinates and show the radius supplied by the browser, if available.

The coordinates in this example come from the browser, not from Google’s IP fallback. The browser’s accuracy is also an estimate in meters; the circle communicates uncertainty instead of implying that the marker is exact. You can remove the circle only if the application does not need to communicate that uncertainty.

When an IP estimate is appropriate

IP location is most useful when the application can tolerate a broad region and does not claim to know the user’s precise position. Examples include choosing an initial language or region, estimating a country for routing, or making a coarse fraud signal. Keep it separate from decisions that need a confirmed address or nearby-device position.

For any map display, label the result as an approximate network location and expose its uncertainty when it could affect the user’s choice. If the radius is too broad for the feature, do not silently zoom to a street-level view and imply precision; ask for browser permission or provide a manual location selector instead.

Privacy, API keys, and Google Maps requirements

  • Explain the request: Tell users why location is needed before the browser permission prompt appears. Do not make the request unexpectedly or repeatedly.
  • Use HTTPS: Browser geolocation requires a secure context. An insecure deployment can make the API unavailable.
  • Restrict keys: Use application and API restrictions appropriate to each key. A Maps JavaScript key used in a web page is visible to visitors, so restrict it to authorized referrers and only the APIs the page requires. Keep server-side web-service keys on the server.
  • Publish policies: Google requires publicly accessible Terms of Use and Privacy Policy documents for applications using the Maps JavaScript and Geolocation APIs.
  • Respect display and storage rules: Results displayed from these APIs must follow Google Maps attribution requirements and, when shown as map content, be displayed on a Google Map. Google generally restricts pre-fetching, caching, and storage of Maps content, subject to documented exceptions such as place IDs.
  • Disclose data handling: Explain whether IP addresses or location coordinates are processed, why they are needed, and how long they are retained. Requirements can vary by geography, including the European Economic Area.

Check the Google Maps Platform terms and policy pages that apply to your application and users before launch; the rules can depend on geography and product usage.

Troubleshooting location and map failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The browser says geolocation is unavailable The page is not in a secure context, the browser lacks support, or device location services are off. Serve over HTTPS, check browser support, and verify device-level location settings.
The permission prompt does not appear The user previously denied access, browser settings block it, or the request was not triggered in the expected context. Explain the feature, ask for a user action, and direct the user to the browser’s site permissions rather than prompting in a loop.
The browser reports permission denied The user or site settings refused access. Keep the rest of the page usable and offer manual location entry or a region selector.
The request times out or returns an unavailable position Location services, network conditions, or device signal are insufficient for a fix. Offer a retry, avoid blocking the feature indefinitely, and permit manual input where practical.
The marker appears far from the user An estimate may be coarse, stale, or based on a network different from the user’s physical location. A server-side IP request may represent the server. Check which method produced the coordinates, show its uncertainty, and do not describe IP fallback as a device fix.
The map is blank or the Maps script fails Invalid or unrestricted key configuration, disabled API, billing/project configuration, network blocking, or a script-loading error. Inspect the browser console and Google Cloud project configuration; verify the Maps JavaScript API is enabled and the key’s referrer restrictions match the page.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo captures a screenshot of a page; it does not determine a visitor’s location or replace browser geolocation. If you already have a map page that you want to capture, its API can return an image with one request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Maps find someone’s exact address from an IP address?

No. The Geolocation API’s IP fallback returns an estimated point and uncertainty radius, not an exact address or verified identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does IP geolocation tell me where a visitor is if my server calls Google?

Not necessarily. The API estimates the IP associated with its request; a server-originated request can be associated with the server’s network address rather than the visitor’s.

Does ScreenshotNeo geolocate visitors?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures webpages as images or PDFs; it is not an IP-geolocation or browser-location service.
