On an iPhone, quickly press Side + Volume Up (or Home + Side on older Home-button models). On Android, press Power + Volume Down. Your device saves an image that you can edit or share. If your goal is to point people to the original post rather than keep a static image, use X’s Repost or Quote Post instead.
First decide whether you need an image or a link to the post
A screenshot is a static image. It is useful when you need to place the post in a document, presentation, message, or evidence file, or when you need a visual record of exactly what was on screen. It does not update if the author edits or deletes the post.
X’s Repost and Quote Post actions keep a reference to the source post. They are usually the better choice when you simply want to share the post and let readers open the original. A Quote Post adds your own text while retaining that reference.

How to screenshot a post on an iPhone
iPhones with Face ID or no Home button
- Open the X app or X in a browser and open the individual post. Make sure the post text and handle are visible.
- Quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up button at the same time. Do not hold them; a quick press is the intended gesture.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner if you want to edit immediately. You can crop, draw, add text, or share it.
- Tap Done, then choose Save to Photos (or another available save option). If you do nothing, the screenshot remains in Photos after the preview disappears.
iPhones with a Home button
- Open the post and position it so the author, handle, text, and any necessary context are on screen.
- Quickly press and release Home + Side together. On some older models, the second button may be labeled the Top button.
- Use the preview to crop or annotate, then save or share the image.
These combinations and the preview workflow follow Apple’s device instructions. iOS labels and the exact preview location can change between releases, but the hardware gesture remains the same for the model categories above.

How to screenshot a post on Android
- Open the post in the X app or a browser. Scroll until the text and account handle you need are visible.
- Press Power + Volume Down together. On many phones, a quick press captures the screen; holding the buttons can open a different power menu.
- Tap the screenshot preview to edit, crop, or share it. The image is also available in your Photos or Gallery app.
Android hardware differs by manufacturer. Google notes that some phones also let you hold the Power button and choose Screenshot. If neither method works, use the instructions supplied for your phone’s manufacturer and Android edition. The saved image can be viewed, edited, and shared like any other photo.
Capturing a long post
If the post or its replies extend below one screen, take separate screenshots rather than cropping away the author or text. Some Android versions offer a scrolling-screenshot control after the first capture, but its availability and name vary by manufacturer. Review the result before sharing so that text is not omitted at a scroll boundary.
How to capture the post on a Mac
- Open the post and arrange the window so the post and its identifying context are visible.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open Apple’s Screenshot controls.
- Choose a full-screen capture, a selected window, or a selected portion. For a post, selecting the browser window or a carefully drawn portion usually avoids unrelated tabs and notifications.
- Choose the destination shown in the Screenshot controls. Open the resulting file to check that the handle and text are readable.
Apple’s digital-safety guidance documents this shortcut as a general macOS capture control, not as an X-specific feature.
Windows: use the built-in capture control for your edition
The device-specific material used for this guide does not verify a single Windows shortcut from an authoritative Microsoft source, and Windows keyboard combinations can differ by edition, keyboard, and configured utilities. Open the screenshot or snipping control included with your Windows installation, capture the browser area containing the post, and save the result. If you need an exact shortcut, check Microsoft’s current documentation for your Windows version rather than relying on a shortcut copied from an older guide.

Whatever capture method you use, avoid including account notifications, private messages, or unrelated browser tabs in the image.
Frame the screenshot so it can be checked later
Keep attribution visible
Leave the display name and handle in the frame. If the post’s date, reply context, quoted post, or media label matters, include that as well. Do not crop so tightly that a viewer cannot tell which account posted it.
Open the post’s detail view when documentation matters
X’s help material says that selecting a post opens its details page and shows the source label at the bottom. Open that view before capturing when you need more context than the timeline card provides. A second screenshot of the detail view can be clearer than trying to fit a long thread into one image.
Understand what an image can and cannot establish
A screenshot records pixels, not independent verification. An academic paper describing screenshot analysis says text, timestamps, and handles can be extracted from an image, but also notes that people rarely verify authenticity before sharing screenshots. A post may later be edited, deleted, restricted, or impersonated in a cropped image. When the matter is important, preserve the original post URL separately and check the live post where possible.

Privacy and safety check before you share
- Look for phone numbers, email addresses, home or workplace details, private messages, location information, or other personal data in the post and surrounding interface.
- Check images and videos for private people or private media that the author did not intend to publish widely.
- Crop notifications and unrelated accounts from the edges of the image.
- Keep the original uncropped file if you need an internal record, and make a separate redacted copy for public sharing.
X’s Private Information Policy, marked March 2024, states: “You may not threaten to expose, incentivize others to expose, or publish or post other people’s private information without their express authorization and permission, or share private media of individuals without their consent.” A screenshot does not give permission that the original post did not give.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The phone opens a power or volume menu instead of taking a screenshot
Press and release the two buttons at the same time rather than holding them. Confirm that you are using the combination for your model: Side + Volume Up on recent iPhones, Home + Side on Home-button iPhones, and Power + Volume Down on most Android phones. On Android, try the Power-menu Screenshot option if your manufacturer provides it.
Only part of the post is visible
Return to the post, close the keyboard or any overlay, and scroll until the handle and required text fit in the frame. For a long thread, make a sequence of overlapping captures so the reading order is unambiguous. Do not rely on a crop that removes the account identity.
The screenshot preview disappears
The preview is temporary; the capture should still be stored in Photos or Gallery. Open that app and look in the Screenshots album or folder. If it is missing, repeat the gesture and wait for the flash or thumbnail confirmation before releasing the phone.

Text is too small to read
Use the post’s detail view, increase the browser or system text size temporarily, or take a closer capture of the post followed by a second image showing the account and context. Avoid enlarging a tiny screenshot after the fact; scaling cannot restore detail that was never captured.
The post has changed or disappeared
Keep the original image, the post URL, and the date and time you accessed it. Treat the image as a record of what was displayed, not as proof that the post remains online or is authentic.

Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. A private or login-gated post may require authorized cookies or headers and may not be suitable for an unauthenticated public URL. Do not send credentials unless you are authorized to use them.
For automated captures, inspect the response headers and retain the verdict with the image. Use a chosen cache TTL when repeated requests can reuse a result; use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks for work that should not block a request, and bulk capture for up to 100 URLs in one call. Those controls reduce repeated browser setup, but they do not turn a screenshot into proof of authenticity or grant permission to republish private material.

When to use each method
- One personal capture: Use the iPhone, Android, Mac, or Windows control already on your device.
- A share that should remain connected to X: Repost or Quote Post.
- Repeated captures, scripts, PDFs, or AI-agent workflows: Use ScreenshotNeo with the public post URL, then retain the URL and capture metadata alongside the file.
Whichever method you choose, show enough attribution for someone else to find the source, remove private information before redistribution, and remember that a static image is a record of a screen—not a self-authenticating copy of a post.
