To convert two-column HTML to PDF without losing its layout, define how the page should print, set the paper size and margins, then render it with a browser-based PDF tool or another engine that supports the CSS you use. First decide what “two-column” means: flowing text columns and two independent side-by-side panels behave differently when content paginates. Browser PDF tools commonly use print styles by default, so a page that looks right on screen may need a separate print stylesheet.
First identify the kind of two-column layout
Before changing CSS or choosing a converter, determine how the HTML creates its columns. The right fix depends on whether the content is meant to flow between columns or stay in two separate panels.
Continuous text columns
CSS multicolumn layout divides one stream of content into columns, much like a newspaper. The browser distributes text across the available column space; content may continue in another column or on another page. Column height, page boundaries, and breaks can interact, so the screen arrangement does not by itself guarantee the same PDF arrangement.
Independent side-by-side panels
A grid or flex layout usually places two distinct blocks beside each other. Each panel has its own content rather than being part of a single flowing text stream. For print, decide whether both panels must fit on each page, whether one may continue below the other, or whether a page break should separate them. A narrow printable area can make a layout that fits a wide screen overflow or shrink in the PDF.

Do not treat these designs as interchangeable. If you want a fixed left-and-right comparison, use a panel layout and check its width at the target paper size. If you want a continuous article to flow through columns, use multicolumn CSS and inspect where content breaks.
Prepare the HTML and print CSS
A reliable conversion starts with explicit print rules rather than relying on the browser’s current window size or default print settings. Keep screen styling and print styling separate where their goals differ.
Set the page and printable area
Use the CSS @page rule to specify page size and margins, or set those values through the renderer’s PDF options. You can use both, but check how your chosen renderer resolves conflicts. The usable width is the paper width minus the left and right margins; both columns, their gap, and any borders or padding must fit within that area.

}This is a starting point, not a universal layout prescription. Apply the multicolumn rule only to continuous text; use the panel rule only when the two sides are independent blocks. For a panel design, test long text, wide tables, and images at the intended paper size. A fixed-width child can exceed the available page width even when the outer grid is sized correctly.

Puppeteer and Playwright generate PDFs using print media by default. That means print-specific CSS can replace screen rules, and screen-only elements may be hidden. If the requirement is to preserve the screen appearance instead, explicitly emulate screen media before calling the PDF method. This choice changes which styles are applied; it does not remove the need to set page dimensions, margins, and pagination behavior.

Check backgrounds, colors, and page breaks
Print settings can omit background graphics or adjust colors. Enable background printing in the PDF options if the design depends on background colors or images. Puppeteer documents that print output may modify colors and points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are required. Confirm the result visually rather than assuming a CSS declaration overrides every print setting.
Use break rules sparingly and test the actual content. A break that looks sensible for one paragraph can leave a large blank area or split a panel awkwardly when text length changes. Long tables, fixed-height sections, and content that crosses a column or page boundary deserve particular attention.
Convert with Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a browser-automation option when your document depends on browser rendering or JavaScript. Its PDF operation uses print styling by default. The following Node.js example assumes you have installed Puppeteer in your project and saved the HTML as input.html. It writes output.pdf with A4 paper, explicit margins, and background printing.

If the page depends on remote fonts, images, or scripts, ensure they have loaded before generating the PDF; a network-idle condition is useful but may not be appropriate for pages with persistent network activity. If you need the screen stylesheet, enable screen media before page.pdf() using Puppeteer’s media-emulation API. Verify the installed Puppeteer version’s documentation for the exact current option names and behavior.
Convert with Playwright
Playwright also exposes a PDF operation for browser-rendered pages and uses print CSS by default. This example uses its Node.js API, writes an A4 PDF, sets margins, prints backgrounds, and asks the PDF operation to prefer CSS page size where present.

})();Replace the file URL with your page URL or a correctly formed local file URL. Playwright documents Letter as its default format, so specify the format or CSS page size rather than assuming the default matches your design. If CSS @page should control the size, use the option that prefers CSS page size; otherwise set paper size and margins in the PDF call. Check the installed Playwright version’s API docs before relying on a particular option.
When WeasyPrint or a print dialog makes sense
WeasyPrint for paged HTML and CSS
WeasyPrint is an HTML-to-PDF engine with paged-media features, including page rules and support for simple multicolumn layouts. Its documentation also covers PDF features such as hyperlinks, bookmarks, attachments, and forms. If your page depends on complex browser JavaScript or CSS behavior outside the engine’s supported set, validate that the output matches your needs before adopting it.
In particular, WeasyPrint documents limitations involving constrained-height layouts, spanning, some column breaks, and pagination or overflow behavior. Those are directly relevant to two-column documents: test representative pages with short and long content rather than judging compatibility from a simple sample.
Browser print dialog for a one-off
For a manual conversion, open the page in a browser and choose Print, then save as PDF. Check paper size, margins, scale, background graphics, and headers or footers in the dialog. Browser-added page margin content may appear when there is space; turn off headers and footers if they interfere with the design. This path is convenient, but settings can vary between users and runs, so it is less suitable when you need repeatable automated output.
Inspect the PDF before relying on it
No renderer guarantees that every stylesheet will paginate as intended. Open the generated file at the target paper size and review the entire document, including its final page. Check:

- Text is not clipped, overlapped, unexpectedly shrunk, or pushed outside the page.
- Column and page breaks leave content in a logical order and do not strand headings.
- Fonts, images, and other remote assets have loaded and are not substituted or missing.
- Backgrounds, colors, and any important borders appear as intended.
- Headers, footers, and page margins do not cover the content.
Test with realistic content, not only a short example. A two-column layout can look balanced with a few paragraphs and fail when one side contains a long table, an oversized image, or much more text than the other.

Use a browser renderer such as Puppeteer or Playwright when the page needs browser rendering, JavaScript, or fine control over PDF options. Consider WeasyPrint when its documented paged-media support fits your HTML and CSS. Use the print dialog for a manual one-off where repeatability is not important. The documentation establishes capabilities and defaults, not a fair performance comparison or a complete cross-engine CSS compatibility matrix; test the features your own page uses.

Troubleshooting common PDF problems
The PDF has one column or different styling than the browser
The PDF renderer likely applied print media, where a print rule may override the screen layout. Inspect your @media print rules and decide whether print styling is intended. If the PDF must match the screen styling, explicitly emulate screen media before generating it; if it should be print-ready, fix the print rules instead.
The columns are too narrow or content is cut off
Compare the combined column widths, gap, padding, and borders with the printable width after margins are applied. Reduce the gap or margins, allow suitable content to wrap, or change the panel arrangement for print. Check for fixed-width children and oversized images, which can overflow even if the outer container appears to fit.

Colors or backgrounds are missing
Enable background printing in the renderer or print dialog. For Puppeteer, inspect its documented print color adjustment guidance, including -webkit-print-color-adjust. Then review the exported file because print settings and renderer behavior still affect the result.
Fonts or images are missing
Make sure local paths resolve from the HTML file’s location and that remote assets are reachable by the browser. Wait for required fonts and images before exporting. If the page has persistent requests, a network-idle wait may never settle; wait for a specific element or asset condition instead of relying on a generic idle state.
Content breaks in the wrong place
Inspect the specific element at the page or column boundary. Adjust print-specific break behavior and test again with the actual content length. Multicolumn pagination, constrained heights, and spanning behavior have engine-specific limits, so changing renderers may help only after confirming that the current one does not support the needed CSS behavior.
Output differs across machines or library upgrades
Paper defaults, renderer versions, fonts, and print settings can change the result. Pin or record the browser automation library and browser version used for production output, set page size and margins explicitly, and keep a representative PDF for visual regression checks after upgrades.
FAQ
Can I convert an HTML string without saving a file?
Yes. Browser automation can load markup into a page before calling its PDF method. The important parts remain the same: make external assets available, apply the intended media styles, and set page dimensions and margins.
Does CSS multi-column layout guarantee balanced columns on every page?
No. Support for simple multicolumn layouts does not guarantee identical balancing or pagination across engines and content. Test the actual HTML and the page breaks that matter in your chosen renderer.
