To convert an HTML file to a JPG, render it as a web page in a browser and save a screenshot in JPEG format. Renaming an .html file to .jpg does not convert it. With Playwright, you can capture just the visible viewport or the full scrollable page, choose a .jpg or .jpeg filename, and—when using its API—set JPEG quality. What you need to decide first
A JPG screenshot is a picture of the page as a browser renders it. The HTML supplies the structure and content; the browser lays them out and displays them; the screenshot records the rendered result as an image. The screenshot is not a copy of the HTML source, and it will not retain the page’s links or editable text as HTML.
Before capturing, choose how much of the page you need and whether you need to control image quality:
- Viewport: captures the portion visible in the browser window. Use it for a specific screen-sized view.
- Full page: captures the full scrollable page, including content below the fold. It may produce a much taller image than the viewport.
- JPEG quality: if you use the Playwright API, its screenshot options include a quality setting for JPEG. The documented default is 80; that is an API default, not a promise about other tools or settings.
For a reliable result, allow the page’s fonts, images, and dynamic content to appear before capturing it. The exact way to open a local HTML project and wait for its resources depends on the chosen tool and environment.

Convert an HTML page with Playwright
Playwright documents screenshot capture through both its API and its command-line interface. The API is useful when you want the capture step in a repeatable script; the CLI is an interactive alternative. Both document JPEG output and full-page capture. Consult the API reference and CLI screenshot documentation for current options.
Use the API when you want control over the output
In a Playwright script, navigate to the page, then take a screenshot with a JPEG filename or set the screenshot type to jpeg. The following is the core capture step for a page object that has already been opened and rendered:

The page-opening and browser-launch steps depend on your Playwright setup, operating system, and how the HTML references its assets.
Use a filename extension to select JPEG
Playwright’s API can infer the screenshot type from the output filename. A path ending in .jpg or .jpeg can therefore select JPEG without an explicit type; spelling out type: 'jpeg' makes the format choice clear in a script. The CLI documentation also describes JPEG output and custom filenames. Check the current CLI reference for the exact command syntax and available flags rather than assuming flags are identical across interfaces.
Decide between viewport and full-page capture
A viewport screenshot records what is currently visible. It is the better choice when the intended image is a single screen or when page height would make the full-page image unwieldy. A full-page screenshot includes content below the visible area and is better for documenting a long page in one image.
Full-page capture can create a large image, and the result may not be convenient to view or share at its original dimensions. If you need a particular crop or output size, determine that requirement before capture. The cited Playwright documentation establishes viewport and full-page options; it does not establish a universal image-size limit for every browser or project.

Consider high-resolution output when detail matters
The Playwright CLI documentation describes a high-resolution or device-pixel option. More pixels can preserve finer detail, but they also make the image dimensions larger. Use it when the image will be inspected closely; for a routine preview, ordinary output may be sufficient. The API and CLI have different interfaces, so check the relevant documentation for the option in the interface you use.
Working with a local HTML file and its assets
A local HTML file may refer to images, stylesheets, fonts, scripts, or other resources. Those references affect what the browser can render and therefore what the screenshot contains. Relative paths, browser access rules, and any external resources can behave differently depending on how the page is opened and where its assets live.
The available Playwright sources document screenshot behavior, not a single guaranteed method for launching every local HTML project or loading every linked resource. Follow the instructions for your Playwright installation and project, and check the rendered page before saving the image. If your HTML depends on local assets, make sure those assets are available to the browser in the environment where the capture runs.
- Open or serve the HTML using a method appropriate to your project and environment.
- Inspect the rendered page for missing images, styles, or fonts before taking the screenshot.
- Wait for dynamic elements and delayed content that matter to your image to appear.
- Choose a viewport capture or full-page capture based on the intended image.
- Save with a .jpg or .jpeg filename, or explicitly request JPEG output in the API.

The output is still HTML or will not open as an image
Changing the extension does not convert the source file. Make sure you are saving a browser screenshot, not renaming the HTML document. In the Playwright API, explicitly request type: 'jpeg' or use a JPEG filename as documented.

A normal screenshot captures the viewport, not necessarily the full document. If you need content below the fold, use the API’s fullPage: true option or the corresponding full-page capability in the CLI. Check the documentation for the interface you are using.

Images, styles, or fonts are missing
Check whether the browser can access each referenced resource in the way you opened the HTML. The screenshot records the page as rendered, so unavailable assets cannot appear correctly in the image. The cited screenshot references do not guarantee behavior for every local-file setup or external resource.
Dynamic content is absent or incomplete
Wait until the page has rendered the content you need before capturing. A screenshot taken too early can reflect an intermediate state. The precise wait strategy depends on the page and your environment; verify the visible result before saving the final image.
The image looks less detailed than expected
Check the capture dimensions and whether you need a high-resolution/device-pixel option. For JPEG, the API’s quality setting controls the output quality; its documented default is 80. Adjust deliberately and inspect the resulting file, since the appropriate setting depends on how the image will be used.

Does a JPG screenshot preserve links or selectable text?
No. A JPG screenshot is a raster image of the rendered page, not the HTML document. It records visual appearance rather than preserving the page’s interactive structure.
Can I turn an HTML file into a JPG without opening it in a browser?
The documented Playwright approach is browser screenshot capture: the HTML must be rendered before it can be captured as an image. A service that accepts a URL likewise needs a reachable page rather than a file that exists only on your computer.
Should I use .jpg or .jpeg?
Either extension identifies a JPEG filename in the Playwright API’s documented type inference behavior. Use the extension that fits your workflow, and explicitly set the type if you want the script to make the format choice unambiguous.
