Generator, design canvas or screenshot API?
A dedicated generator is fastest when you need a sequence of framed screens and marketing copy. A general design canvas gives finer art direction but requires more manual resizing. A screenshot API captures a URL on demand, which is useful for a web app, documentation, a responsive companion site or automated marketing pages; it does not create a native iOS or Android build capture by itself.
Store requirements you must design around
Apple App Store
Apple’s App Store Connect upload guidance accepts at least one and at most ten screenshots for an app version. Accepted formats are JPEG, JPG and PNG, and Apple’s specifications say images cannot contain an alpha channel or transparency. Device families have separate accepted dimensions, and some families are required when your app supports them.
For example, Apple’s current specification table lists 13-inch iPad portrait options of 2064 × 2752 and 2048 × 2732 for applicable models; 13-inch iPad screenshots are required when the app runs on iPad. Do not copy that example to every iPad or iPhone target. Select the exact device family and resolution in Apple’s current screenshot specification table.
When the interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, Apple allows you to provide the highest required resolution and scale it down. Media Manager can be used when you need to upload specific sizes or localized sets. After a version is submitted and approved, changing its screenshots requires a new version, so plan a replacement set before submission.

Google Play
Google Play Console’s help guidance requires PNG or JPEG screenshots, limits each file to 8 MB, and specifies an 8:5 aspect ratio. Do not apply Apple’s device-size assumptions to Play. Check the current Play Console guidance for the target device category and listing type.
When a preview video and screenshots appear together, Google Play displays the video first and then the screenshots in their supplied order. Arrange your sequence so the first image still makes sense when a user is browsing on a smaller screen.
Why a preset is not proof of compliance
- A template may use the wrong pixel dimensions for the device family you selected.
- A transparent PNG can violate Apple’s no-alpha requirement even if it looks opaque on your canvas.
- Text, frames or decorative elements can hide important interface controls or imply functionality the app lacks.
- Compression can push a Google Play file over 8 MB.
- A generated image can show an old build, untranslated copy or a screen that users cannot reach.
Validate the actual files and listing preview instead of trusting a badge that says “store ready.”

- Choose storefronts and targets. List Apple device families, Google Play listing targets, portrait or landscape orientation, and every language you will publish. Include tablets when the app supports them.
- Capture the real UI. Use a release-quality build on a physical device, iOS Simulator or Android Emulator. Remove test data, debug banners and personal information. Capture the states that prove your main value rather than decorative splash screens.
- Plan a sequence. Give each image one message: for example, onboarding, core task, result, collaboration and settings. Put the strongest benefit first and keep captions short enough to read at listing scale.
- Build one visual system. Set a frame style, background, type scale, safe margins and caption position. Duplicate the master layout for each device and language rather than redesigning every image.
- Keep the interface visible. Place headlines outside the screen area where possible. If a frame or caption overlaps the UI, confirm that no control, status message or data is obscured.
- Export per platform. Choose exact dimensions, orientation and an opaque background. Export PNG or JPEG according to the destination and retain an uncompressed working file.
- Inspect and preview. Check pixel dimensions, file type, alpha-channel state, file size, text legibility and ordering. Use Apple’s App Store Connect Preview to see how assets appear before release, then review the Google Play listing preview as well.
- Archive source files. Keep the original captures, localized copy and export settings together. A later app update or translation should be a controlled revision, not a new manual reconstruction.
Design choices that improve store communication
Use truthful, readable copy
Write a benefit that the displayed screen demonstrates. Avoid claims such as “works offline” or “instant approval” unless the app actually delivers them. Test captions on a phone-sized preview; type that looks comfortable on a desktop canvas often becomes too small in a store carousel.
Show progression without repetition
A sequence should answer different questions. Follow an overview with the action users care about, then show the outcome. Repeating nearly identical screens wastes one of Apple’s ten slots and weakens the first impression on Google Play.

Localize as a layout, not only as a translation
Longer words, right-to-left scripts and different line breaks can change the composition. Duplicate the layout per language, check every caption and in-app label, and export an organized set so the correct locale cannot be uploaded to the wrong listing.
Preserve accessibility and contrast
Keep contrast high between text and its background, avoid placing copy over busy imagery, and do not rely on color alone to explain a state. These are design practices rather than a guarantee of review approval, but they make the actual experience easier to understand.

Evaluation checklist
- Store and device coverage: Can it produce every phone and tablet target your release supports?
- Export controls: Can you set exact dimensions, orientation, format and an opaque background?
- Composition: Can you adjust frames, text, spacing and ordering without covering the UI?
- Localization: Can you duplicate and organize language-specific sets safely?
- Workflow and privacy: Does it upload unpublished screens, retain them, or offer a local workflow? Verify the vendor’s current policy.
- Cost and licensing: Check current prices, export limits and commercial-use terms before committing.
DIY checks before uploading
Open each exported file in an image editor or a script that reports metadata. Confirm the width and height match the selected Apple device or the Google Play canvas, that the file is PNG or JPEG, and that no unwanted alpha channel remains. Check the byte size, especially for Play’s 8 MB limit. Zoom out to the approximate size users will see and read every caption.
Compare the screen shown in the asset with the current build. Remove prototype data, unsupported badges, fake ratings and controls that are not available in the submitted version. Finally, upload to the store’s preview environment and inspect cropping, ordering and localization before submitting.

Troubleshooting common failures
The store rejects the file
Re-read the current platform specification, then inspect dimensions, orientation, format, alpha channel and file size. A generator’s preset may target a different device family. Re-export with an opaque background and the exact required pixel size.

The screenshot looks polished but is misleading
Replace fabricated or outdated screens with captures from the submitted build. Remove claims, badges and controls that users will not encounter. Check Apple’s accurate-metadata guidance, including App Review Guideline 2.3, before uploading.
Text is clipped after localization
Open the localized master rather than editing the source language export. Allow additional lines, test right-to-left scripts where applicable, and keep the UI and caption readable at store display scale.
A URL capture is blank or blocked in ScreenshotNeo

The automated result is stale
Review the cache setting and choose a TTL appropriate to the page’s update frequency, or disable caching for a release capture. Confirm that your source URL serves the new build before generating another asset.

- Each storefront and supported device family has the right dimensions and orientation.
- Files use an accepted format, contain no prohibited transparency, and meet size limits.
- Captions are legible, localized and do not hide important UI.

Can an AI-generated mockup replace an app capture?
Use generated artwork only for backgrounds or framing. The screen itself should represent the functionality and interface users receive in the submitted build; a decorative mockup cannot verify that.
What should I keep when handing screenshot work to a teammate?
Share the original device captures, the master layout, localization copy, target device list and export settings. This makes revisions reproducible when the app or store requirements change.
Is a screenshot API enough for a native-app store listing?
No. An API that captures URLs is useful for web surfaces and automation, while native iOS and Android listing images still require authentic device or simulator captures followed by platform validation.
