How to Create a YouTube Thumbnail from a Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make a YouTube thumbnail from your video, choose a sharp, representative frame, export it as an image, and upload it in YouTube Studio. For a standard video, YouTube recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels; a frame is a starting point, not a requirement to upload an unedited still.

Choose a frame that tells the truth about the video

Scrub through your source video in a video editor or player and pause on a frame that clearly represents what viewers will see. Look for a moment that is in focus, easy to understand at small size, and composed so its main subject is not cut off. A frame with motion blur, a blocked face, or a cluttered background can be a poor thumbnail even if it looks fine at full-screen size.

You can capture that frame and use it as the thumbnail, or use it as source material for a more deliberate composition in an image editor. YouTube’s upload instructions require an image file; they do not require that the image be a frame taken directly from the video or prescribe a particular frame-capture tool or design app.

Make the frame useful at thumbnail size

  • Preview the image reduced to the size at which a viewer is likely to encounter it. Check that the main subject remains recognizable.
  • Keep important details away from the edges, where cropping or a different display shape may make them harder to see.
  • If you add text or graphic elements, keep them legible and make sure they describe the actual video.
  • Do not assume a particular font, color, face, or text treatment will increase views. The official YouTube material cited here sets image specifications and policy rules, not performance guarantees for a design style.

Prepare the image to match the video format

YouTube’s current help pages recommend different dimensions and aspect ratios for standard videos and Shorts. These are recommendations and upload limits, not a requirement to create every thumbnail in one exact editing program. The pages are undated in the retrieved material; check YouTube Help again if an upload is rejected or the interface changes.

Video type Recommended image Minimum dimension File formats Upload size limit
Standard video 3840 × 2160 pixels; 16:9 640 pixels wide JPG or PNG 50 MB from a computer; 2 MB from mobile
Short 2160 × 3840 pixels; 9:16 640 pixels high JPG or PNG 50 MB from a computer; 2 MB from mobile

The pixel dimensions are YouTube’s recommendations, while the minimum dimensions and file-size caps are constraints to observe when preparing and uploading the image. If your source video is lower resolution than the recommended thumbnail dimensions, enlarging a captured frame does not add genuine detail. You can still compose an image at the recommended size, but inspect it at its displayed size for softness or artifacts before uploading.

Export and check the file

  1. Set the image canvas to the appropriate landscape or portrait ratio for the type of video.
  2. Place the selected frame on the canvas. Crop or reposition it so the key subject is clear.
  3. Export as JPG or PNG, then check that the saved file—not just the working project—is below the upload limit for the device you will use.
  4. Open the exported image once to confirm it is not blank, incorrectly cropped, or an unintended frame.

Upload a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio

Your account must be verified to use custom thumbnails. YouTube also provides autogenerated thumbnail suggestions, so you can choose one of those instead of uploading an image.

On a computer

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Open Content and select the video.
  3. In the Thumbnail area, choose Upload file.
  4. Select the prepared image, then save your changes.

You can choose one of YouTube’s generated suggestions in the same thumbnail area instead. The custom-image route gives you control over the image you prepared; the suggestion route avoids making and uploading a separate image. YouTube’s official computer instructions describe both choices.

In the YouTube Studio Android app

For a standard video, open Content, select the video, tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail. Choose an autogenerated option or select a custom image from the device, confirm the selection, and save. YouTube notes that a thumbnail change may take time to appear.

Account for vertical videos and Shorts

A vertical video does not display a landscape thumbnail identically in every YouTube surface. YouTube says that on mobile Home, Explore, and Subscriptions, it replaces a custom 16:9 thumbnail for a vertical video with an autogenerated 4:5 image. The custom thumbnail still appears in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. If mobile discovery is important, check how the video is presented in those places rather than assuming the uploaded landscape image will appear everywhere.

For Shorts, YouTube’s current help says that a custom thumbnail can be added through YouTube Studio on a computer. The recommended Shorts image is portrait 9:16 at 2160 × 3840 pixels, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Because Shorts controls and publishing behavior can change, confirm the current Studio interface when you publish.

Follow YouTube’s thumbnail policies

A thumbnail must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and must not mislead viewers about the video. YouTube’s examples of content that can lead to rejection and a strike include nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content. Its thumbnail policy also addresses deceptive impersonation and trademark-holder rights. Review the current YouTube Help pages for the full policy before publishing borderline material.

A dramatic still or added graphic can attract attention while still accurately representing the video. Avoid implying that a person, event, result, or scene appears in the video when it does not. The image is what viewers see before choosing the video, so its promise should match the content.

ScreenshotNeo captures web pages; it does not extract a frame from a video file or replace the frame-selection and image-editing steps above. It can be useful when you also need a clean screenshot of a related web page, such as a page you want to reference while composing an image. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

With ScreenshotNeo, cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo for details, or sign up free.

Troubleshooting thumbnail problems

What happens Likely cause What to check
You cannot find the custom upload option The account is not verified, or you are using a workflow where custom upload is not available. Confirm account verification. For a Short, use YouTube Studio on a computer; the Android instructions in this article apply to standard videos.
YouTube will not accept the file The image may exceed the upload size limit, use an unsupported format, or miss the relevant minimum dimension. Export as JPG or PNG, check the actual saved file size against the computer or mobile limit, and confirm the minimum width for a standard video or minimum height for a Short.
The image looks wrong on a vertical video YouTube substitutes an autogenerated 4:5 image on some mobile browsing surfaces for vertical videos with a 16:9 custom thumbnail. Check the mobile Home, Explore, and Subscriptions presentation separately from the watch feed and other listed surfaces.
The new image has not appeared yet YouTube says changes may take time to appear. Allow time for the update to propagate, then check the video again in Studio and on the relevant viewing surface.
The thumbnail is rejected or triggers a policy issue The image may violate Community Guidelines or mislead viewers. Review the current thumbnail and Community Guidelines policies, then replace the image with one that accurately represents the video and complies with the rules.
