How to Take Screenshots Using Power Automate Desktop

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To take a screenshot in Power Automate for desktop, use Take screenshot of web page for a webpage or Take screenshot of UI element for a control in a Windows application. Choose whether to capture the whole page or a captured web element, then save the image to the clipboard or a file. The browser method requires a browser instance; capturing one web element also requires identifying that element in the flow.

Choose the right screenshot action

Power Automate for desktop has separate actions for browser content and Windows desktop controls. Pick the action based on what you want pictured—not just the application that happens to be open.

What you need Action Target Output
A whole webpage Take screenshot of web page Entire web page Clipboard or file
One control on a webpage Take screenshot of web page Specific element, identified as a web UI element Clipboard or file
A control in a Windows application Take screenshot of UI element Desktop UI element Clipboard or file

Microsoft describes the webpage action as taking a screenshot of the webpage—or an element on it—currently displayed in the browser and saving the image to a file or clipboard. Its UI-element action captures a UI element in a window. These actions are not interchangeable: use a web UI element for a browser target and a desktop UI element for a Windows application target.

Capture a webpage in a desktop flow

For a repeatable browser capture, launch or attach to the browser, navigate to the page, and then configure the screenshot action. Microsoft lists launch options for Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. Use the browser option available in your installation and flow.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Create a desktop flow. Open Power Automate for desktop and create a new desktop flow.
  2. Start or connect to a browser. Add Launch new Microsoft Edge, Launch new Chrome, or Launch new Firefox, or attach to an existing supported browser. Keep the browser instance available to subsequent browser actions.
  3. Open the target page. Add the navigation action for the browser and enter the page address. If the page needs time to render, add an appropriate wait before capturing. A page load completing does not necessarily mean that every dynamic element or image is ready.
  4. Identify the target if you need one element. Capture the control as a web UI element through the UI-elements pane or from the screenshot action. Most browser actions use web UI elements captured from webpages; a desktop UI element is not a substitute.
  5. Add the capture action. Add Take screenshot of web page. Set Capture to Entire web page for the full webpage, or Specific element and select the captured web UI element for a single target.
  6. Choose the destination. Set Save mode to Clipboard for an image you intend to paste, or File to write an image. In File mode, provide the full Image file path.
  7. Choose an image format and run the flow. The action documentation lists BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF. Verify the file at the destination or check that the clipboard contains the captured image.

Whole page versus specific element

Entire web page is the choice when the output should represent the page rather than an individual control. Use Specific element when you need a particular captured target, such as a page section or control. The specific-element setting depends on a captured web UI element; if that element is missing or no longer matches the page, the action can fail rather than silently capturing the intended region.

Clipboard versus file

Clipboard mode is convenient when the next step is to paste the image into another application or use it immediately. File mode is appropriate when the flow must leave a persistent image at a known location. The file setting requires a full image path. The action references list save failures, so ensure the destination exists and is writable before the flow reaches the screenshot step.

Capture a control in a Windows application

For a desktop app window rather than a webpage, use Take screenshot of UI element. First capture the control as a desktop UI element, then configure the action’s save mode and image format.

  1. In the flow, identify the Windows application control as a desktop UI element.
  2. Add Take screenshot of UI element and select that captured element.
  3. Choose Clipboard or File. For File mode, enter the full image path.
  4. Select one of the documented formats—BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, or WMF—and run the flow.

If the element cannot be retrieved, recapture it and confirm that the target window and control still match what the flow expects. Use this action for controls in Windows application windows; for webpage controls, use the browser action and a web UI element instead.

Focus, minimization, and physical interaction

Browser flows do not all have the same visibility requirements. Default browser automation can run while the browser is minimized. Actions that use physical interaction are different: the browser must be visible and the target tab focused. If a capture depends on physical interaction, bring the browser to the foreground and make the intended tab active before the capture step.

This distinction matters when a flow works while you watch it but fails in a minimized session, or when it captures the wrong browser tab. Check whether the flow’s preceding actions use physical interaction before treating minimization as a general screenshot limitation.

Troubleshoot common capture failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Element not found or CSS selector not found The captured web UI element no longer matches the page, or the wrong element type was selected. Recapture the web element; confirm the target is still present and use a web UI element for browser content. For a Windows app, recapture the desktop UI element.
Failure to retrieve the UI element The desktop target is unavailable or its captured identification no longer matches. Confirm the target window is present and recapture the control as a desktop UI element.
Save failure The file path is invalid, the destination is unavailable or unwritable, or the clipboard cannot be used. For File mode, check that the full path is valid and its destination exists and is writable. For Clipboard mode, check clipboard availability.
Screenshot capture failed The browser instance, target element, or page state is not ready or cannot be captured. Confirm the flow is using the correct browser instance and target, allow the page to reach the needed state, then retry.
Capture is missing content or targets the wrong tab The page has not finished rendering, or a physical-interaction step ran without the intended tab focused. Add a wait suited to the page and, when physical interaction is involved, make the browser visible with the intended tab focused.
Wrong action group or element type A browser target was treated as a desktop control, or vice versa. Use browser automation and web UI elements for webpages; use UI automation and desktop UI elements for Windows application controls.

The browser and UI-element screenshot action references both list capture and save failures, and their element-related failures point to different target types. Use the actual failed step to narrow down whether the issue is locating the element, capturing it, or writing the result.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the specified page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Practical reliability and cost considerations

For a Power Automate flow, reliability starts with targeting the right element and capturing at the right time. A fixed delay can help when a page is still rendering, but it should reflect the page’s actual loading needs; a delay that is too short leaves content incomplete, while an unnecessarily long wait slows every run. When a capture is intermittent, inspect the page state and the element match before changing the output format.

Use the destination deliberately: clipboard output is transient and depends on clipboard availability, while file output depends on a valid writable path. The documented action options describe output formats and save destinations, but do not establish a screenshot-specific charge or run-time guarantee. Any cost or execution limit for a desktop flow depends on the Power Automate environment and plan, which are not specified by the screenshot action references summarized here.

For website captures at scale or from another application, an API can avoid setting up a visible browser flow, but it does not replace a desktop UI screenshot action. ScreenshotNeo lists bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, caching with a chosen TTL, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, and a usage API among its options. Those are API-specific capabilities; they do not change how Power Automate identifies a Windows control or browser element.

Which method fits your task?

  • Choose Take screenshot of web page for the whole page or a specific browser element.
  • Choose Take screenshot of UI element for a control in a Windows application.
  • Choose Clipboard when another step will paste or immediately use the image; choose File when the flow needs a persistent output path.
  • Use visible browser focus when the capture sequence uses physical interaction; otherwise, default browser automation can run minimized.
  • Consider a website screenshot API when the input is a URL and you do not need to capture a Windows desktop control.
