How to Take a Screenshot from Inspect Element in Chrome and Firefox

Capture a webpage element directly from Chrome or Firefox DevTools, or create a full-page screenshot with Firefox’s toolbar and console commands.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Chrome: right-click the page element, choose Inspect, then right-click its DOM node in the Elements panel and select Capture node screenshot. The image is saved in Downloads. In Firefox, right-click the node in Inspector and choose Screenshot Node. Use Firefox’s full-page command when you need content below the fold.

Choose the capture you actually need

“Screenshot from Inspect Element” can mean two different jobs:

  • One element: a card, banner, image, table, navigation menu, or other DOM node.
  • The whole page: the rendered page, including content outside the current browser window.

A node screenshot follows the selected element’s rendered size. A full-page screenshot captures the page canvas instead. If you select the wrong node, capture before content finishes loading, or leave a popup open, the file will faithfully record that state.

Chrome: capture one element with DevTools

  1. Open the page in Chrome and wait until the element has the content and styling you want.
  2. Right-click the element on the page and choose Inspect. DevTools opens with the corresponding node highlighted in Elements.
  3. Check the highlighted DOM node. Expand parents or children if Chrome selected a wrapper instead of the visible component. You can also use DevTools’ page-inspection tool to select a different element.
  4. Right-click the correct node in the DOM tree and choose Capture node screenshot.
  5. Open your Downloads folder. Chrome saves the image there.

Chrome’s documented workflow supports screenshots of individual nodes in the DOM tree. It is the most direct choice when you need the component itself rather than everything below the fold.

Getting the correct node

Modern sites often wrap a visible card in several nested elements. Selecting a parent may include padding, a background, or neighboring controls; selecting a child may omit the heading or border. Move through the DOM tree while watching the page highlight, and choose the smallest node that contains the complete visual you need.

Before you capture

  • Scroll the target into view and confirm its current state.
  • Dismiss consent banners, newsletter prompts, and chat bubbles if they obscure the component.
  • Wait for lazy images, fonts, and animations to settle.
  • For menus or tooltips, open the state first and then inspect the element that remains visible.

Firefox: capture a single DOM node

  1. Open the page in Firefox. Right-click the target and choose Inspect or open Web Developer Tools and select the Inspector.
  2. In the Inspector’s HTML pane, find the node that represents the target.
  3. Right-click that node and choose Screenshot Node.
  4. Find the resulting image in Downloads.

This route is Firefox’s element-level equivalent of Chrome’s Capture node screenshot. The menu label is different, but the important step is the same: invoke the command from the selected DOM node, not from an arbitrary page area.

Firefox: capture the entire page

Toolbar method

  1. Open Developer Tools Settings.
  2. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  3. Use the new screenshot button in the Developer Tools toolbar.
  4. Firefox captures the current page and saves the image to Downloads.

Web Console method

Firefox’s Web Console provides a command with useful options:

:screenshot --fullpage

--fullpage includes content outside the current window bounds. The helper also documents these parameters:

Parameter Use
--delay Wait before capture so a menu, hover state, or animation can appear.
--dpr Set the device-pixel ratio for the output.
--filename Choose a filename; use a name ending in .png.
--clipboard Copy the result to the clipboard.
--file Write the capture to a file.
--selector Capture a selected element and its descendants.

For example, a delayed full-page capture can be written as:

:screenshot --fullpage --delay 2 --filename page.png

If you need only a component and know its CSS selector, use the selector option:

:screenshot --selector ".pricing-card" --filename pricing-card.png

The exact selector must match the live DOM. If the page uses a generated class name, inspect the node and copy a stable selector or an ID instead.

Chrome versus Firefox at a glance

Need Chrome Firefox
Single element Elements node context menu → Capture node screenshot Inspector node context menu → Screenshot Node
Whole page The documented workflow here establishes node capture; use the current Chrome DevTools documentation for other capture modes. Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page, or run :screenshot --fullpage
Delay before capture Not established by the documented node workflow --delay
Choose selector Select the node in Elements --selector
Output location Downloads Downloads by default; console options can specify a file

Browser interfaces change. If a label differs, look for the current equivalent in the node’s context menu or Developer Tools settings rather than assuming a keyboard shortcut or command that your version may not provide.

Dynamic pages, responsive layouts, and edge cases

Lazy-loaded content

Scroll through the page first if images or sections load only when they approach the viewport. Capture after the desired content appears. A screenshot records rendered pixels, not the page’s source code or an unloaded placeholder.

Responsive design

The screenshot reflects the current viewport, zoom, device-pixel ratio, and responsive breakpoint. Resize the browser or use the device-emulation controls before selecting the node when you need a mobile or tablet layout. Recheck the selected node after changing dimensions because responsive markup can change.

Sticky headers and fixed widgets

A fixed header or chat widget may overlap a full-page result even though it is positioned separately in the DOM. Hide or dismiss it before capture when an unobstructed page is required. Selecting a component node avoids unrelated fixed elements.

Animations and hover states

Pause long transitions or use Firefox’s --delay when the desired state appears after a short interaction. Otherwise the screenshot may catch an intermediate frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-origin frames

An embedded frame can have its own document and DOM. Inspecting the outer frame element does not guarantee that you can select an inner document’s node from the parent page. If the content is supplied by another origin, use that frame’s own context where browser permissions allow, or capture the visible frame as part of the page.

Canvas and video

Canvas pixels and the current video frame are rendered output. Selecting a surrounding container may include them, but a semantic child element may not exist for every visual detail. Pause video and wait for the canvas to draw before capturing.

Troubleshooting

“Capture node screenshot” or “Screenshot Node” is missing

Make sure you are right-clicking a node inside the Elements or Inspector tree, not the page itself. Select a normal element node and try again. Browser labels and available commands can vary by version.

The image contains the wrong content

Return to the DOM tree and verify the highlight. Parent wrappers often include extra whitespace; child nodes may omit borders or text. Use the page-inspection tool and follow the highlight until it encloses exactly the intended component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete

Wait for network-loaded content and lazy images, then capture again. Check whether a consent dialog, bot check, or login gate is covering the page. A screenshot cannot show content the browser never rendered.

The full-page image stops early

Use Firefox’s :screenshot --fullpage or its enabled full-page toolbar button. For pages with infinite scrolling, load the sections you need first; an “entire page” operation cannot include content that the site has not yet created.

The selector command captures nothing

Confirm spelling, punctuation, and whether the element is inside a frame. Inspect the live node and test a simpler selector such as an ID or a class. Generated framework classes may change after every load.

The capture includes a popup or chat bubble

Close it before selecting the node. For a repeatable automated workflow, hide the widget with page CSS or use a capture service that removes common overlays before rendering.

ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot with one request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can capture a CSS-selected element or a full page, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, load lazy images, set a viewport or device preset, use dark mode and retina scale, run custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element, hide selectors, and control headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, geolocation, caching, and resource blocking. It also supports PDF settings, HTML/CSS-to-image, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, signed public image links, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot when those cleanup steps are enabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and authentication. A direct call looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Cost, reliability, and workflow considerations

  • Built-in tools: Chrome and Firefox are immediate and free for occasional, interactive captures. They depend on your local browser state and require you to repeat the inspection steps.
  • Automation: An API is more suitable for scheduled pages, many URLs, fixed viewports, signed links, or server-side jobs. Set explicit waits and selectors so dynamic content is ready before capture.
  • Repeatability: Record the URL, viewport, selector, delay, cookies, and user-agent assumptions. A page can change between two captures even when your command is identical.
  • Failure handling: Save response status and output headers, retry transient network failures, and distinguish a genuinely rendered page from a blank or blocked response.

Practical checklist

  1. Decide between one DOM node and the entire page.
  2. Wait for fonts, images, and interactive content.
  3. Inspect and verify the exact node or selector.
  4. Close overlays and set the desired responsive viewport.
  5. Capture using Chrome’s node command or Firefox’s node/full-page route.
  6. Open the file and check crop, state, and resolution before sharing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Inspect Element screenshot the HTML or the rendered design?

It captures the rendered browser output of the selected node or page. It does not export the DOM, CSS, or source files.

Where do Chrome and Firefox save screenshots?

Both documented node workflows save the image in the browser’s Downloads folder. Firefox’s console options can also specify a filename or file destination.

Can I capture only an element by CSS selector?

Firefox’s Web Console supports :screenshot --selector. Chrome’s documented route is to select the corresponding node in Elements and use Capture node screenshot.

Why is my screenshot different from what another person sees?

Viewport size, device-pixel ratio, cookies, login state, responsive breakpoints, timing, and dynamically loaded content can all change the rendered result.
