Start by testing the on-screen capture tool instead of pressing the same shortcut again. Open your device’s built-in screenshot interface, capture a small area, then check whether the result was copied to the clipboard or saved as a file. If the panel works, the problem is usually a shortcut, keyboard mapping or app restriction—not screenshot capture itself. The correct keys and save location depend on your operating system, so use the section for your device below.
Fast diagnosis: separate capture, shortcut and saving problems
- Identify the device and operating system. Windows 10 and 11, macOS, Android and ChromeOS use different controls. On Android, also note the phone model and Android version.
- Open the native capture interface. Use Snipping Tool, Screenshot, Screen Capture or the equivalent menu rather than relying on a keyboard shortcut.
- Capture a test image. If the interface captures successfully, troubleshoot the keyboard, key combination or the specific app where the shortcut failed.
- Check both destinations. A capture may be on the clipboard waiting to be pasted, or it may already be saved in a platform folder that you did not check.
- Compare another app or capture mode. A failure limited to one window can be an application restriction rather than a system-wide fault.
Do not assume that one universal shortcut fixes every computer or phone. The documented combinations and default folders differ by platform.
Windows 10 and 11
Use Snipping Tool when the shortcut does nothing
Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it directly. Select New, then choose rectangle, window, full-screen or free-form capture. This bypasses a broken or remapped keyboard shortcut. You can also press Windows+Shift+S to open the capture overlay when that combination works.
After selecting an area, the snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window. Choose Save as and select a folder and filename. If you only copied the image, paste it into Paint, an email or another editor; no file will appear until you save it.

Try the alternate Windows key combinations

On compact laptop keyboards, the Fn key may be required for a function-layer key. If none of these combinations reacts, test an external keyboard or use Snipping Tool with the mouse. That distinguishes a keyboard problem from a capture problem.
When a Windows app cannot access the image
If a third-party editor cannot read or write your image libraries, review Settings > Privacy & security in Windows 11, or Settings > Privacy in Windows 10. Check permissions for Pictures, Documents and Videos as applicable. A denied library permission can limit that app; it does not by itself prove that Snipping Tool failed.
Mac
Use the built-in Screenshot panel
Press Shift-Command-5 to open macOS Screenshot. From the panel, choose full screen, a window or a selected portion, and inspect the Options menu for the save location. This is the best test when another shortcut appears dead.

Hold Control while using a screenshot shortcut to copy the capture instead of creating the normal file. Paste it into an app to verify that the capture occurred.

Restore or inspect changed shortcuts
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots. Confirm that the commands you use are enabled and still assigned to the expected key combinations. A managed Mac or a utility that remaps keys can change these assignments.
When one Mac window will not capture
Try full-screen or selected-area capture, or test another application. Apple documents that some applications, including DVD Player, may not allow window pictures. A failure in one app therefore does not establish that macOS screenshot capture is broken. If a floating thumbnail appears, do not dismiss it before checking whether it is being dragged, opened or swiped away; also verify the destination shown in Screenshot options.
Android phones and tablets
Try the standard buttons, then the Power menu
Press Power+Volume Down at the same time. If that does not work, hold the Power button and tap Screenshot in the power menu, where that option is provided. Timing and button layouts vary by manufacturer. Some Pixel instructions apply to Android 11 or newer, so check the model and version before applying them to another phone.
If neither method works, use the phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Android’s official guidance treats these controls as device-dependent; do not assume a Samsung, Motorola, Pixel or other model has identical menus.

Find an Android capture that seems missing
- In Google Photos, open Collections > On this device > Screenshots.
- On older Android versions or phones using another gallery, open the Gallery app and its Screenshots folder.
- Look for an on-screen preview immediately after pressing the buttons. If there is a preview but no file, investigate storage access or the gallery’s folder view rather than repeating the button press.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
Open Screen Capture without the keyboard shortcut
Use the Chromebook’s Screenshot key when present. Otherwise open Settings > Screen Capture, or open the shelf/time menu and choose Screen capture. The shelf menu is a useful test because it avoids the keyboard entirely.
Google documents Shift+Ctrl+Show windows for the capture tool. If an external keyboard has no Show windows key, use Ctrl+Shift+F5. These alternatives help identify whether the missing key or keyboard layout is the only fault.
Check Downloads and the selected folder
Chromebook screenshots save to Downloads by default. In the capture tool, open its settings and select another folder if needed. In the Files app, search Downloads by the time you made the test capture before concluding that it disappeared.
When the screenshot is captured but you cannot find it

A clipboard capture is real even though it has no filename. Paste into an image editor first, then save it. Conversely, a saved file may not appear in a recent-items view if the capture tool was configured to use another folder.

Troubleshooting by symptom
No visual response to a shortcut
- Open the platform’s capture panel with the mouse or system menu.
- Try the documented alternate combination for your keyboard, including Fn or the external-keyboard Chromebook fallback.
- Test another keyboard if the on-screen interface works.
- Inspect shortcut settings on macOS and any keyboard-remapping utility.
A preview appears, but no file does
- Check whether the image was copied to the clipboard rather than saved.
- Use the tool’s explicit Save as command on Windows.
- Check the platform’s default folder and the location selected in capture options.
- Paste the clipboard contents into an editor and save manually.
Only one application or window fails
Capture the desktop or a different application. If those work, the original app may restrict window capture or draw content through a protected surface. Apple specifically notes that some applications do not allow window pictures; do not generalize that limitation to every app.
The problem occurs on a work-managed device
Company policies, restricted permissions or vendor-specific software can alter capture behavior. The platform instructions above do not establish a universal policy fix. Contact your administrator or device vendor after recording the model, operating-system version and exact capture mode that failed.

When to escalate
Escalate only after the native capture interface, alternate key combination and expected destination have all been tested. For Android-specific failures, contact the phone manufacturer. For iPhone button instructions, use Apple Support for your exact model because those steps were not verified here. Keep the device model, operating-system version, failing shortcut, capture mode and destination details ready for support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot be taken if the keyboard shortcut is broken?
Yes. Use the operating system’s on-screen capture interface—Snipping Tool on Windows, Screenshot on Mac, Screen Capture on Chromebook, or the Android Power menu—then save or share the result from that interface.
Why is my screenshot visible in a preview but missing from a folder?
The preview may represent a clipboard copy, or the capture tool may be saving to a different configured folder. Paste into an editor or inspect the platform’s documented default location and capture settings.
Do I need paid screenshot software to fix basic capture?
No. Windows, macOS, Android and ChromeOS all provide built-in capture paths. A website screenshot API is useful for automated web captures, not required for ordinary device screenshots.
