For a one-off delayed screenshot, press Shift-Command-5, open Options, choose a timer and save location, then capture. For repeatable automation, use an Automator workflow imported into Shortcuts, or call macOS’s screencapture utility from a script or scheduler. The built-in Screenshot app timer delays one capture; Apple’s documentation does not establish it as a recurring scheduler.
Choose the right Mac screenshot method
| Method | Best for | What it automates | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshot app | A single delayed capture with no setup | Timer, destination, pointer and thumbnail preferences | The documented timer is not a repeating schedule |
| Automator imported into Shortcuts | A visual, repeatable workflow | Capture plus file handling or other scriptable steps | Available actions and behavior can vary by macOS version |
screencapture |
Scripts, explicit paths, displays and regions | Delay, display, rectangle, format and output/clipboard control | Confirm flags with man screencapture on the target Mac |
macOS Mojave 10.14 and later include the Screenshot app. Supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later may also offer SDR PNG or HDR HEIF format choices. Exact command-line behavior should be checked locally because the available manual and flags can differ between releases.
Take a timed screenshot with Screenshot
- Press Shift-Command-5, or open Applications > Utilities > Screenshot.
- Choose full screen, a window, or a selected portion.
- Open Options. Under Timer, select the delay you need. Under Save to, select a folder or another destination.
- Decide whether to show the floating thumbnail and whether to include the mouse pointer.
- Start the capture. After the delay, macOS writes the file to the selected destination.
This is useful when you need time to open a menu, position a window, or move the pointer out of the way. It is not a background scheduler: the Apple instructions document a timer for a capture, not an option that repeats every minute, hour, or day.
Direct shortcuts
- Shift-Command-3 captures the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4 lets you drag a rectangular area.
- Press Space after Shift-Command-4 to switch to window capture.
- Hold Control with these shortcuts to send the result to the clipboard instead of relying on a file destination.
Some applications, including Apple TV, may prevent window screenshots. In that case, use a permitted display or region capture, or follow the application’s own export method.

Build a repeatable workflow with Automator and Shortcuts
Use this route when a screenshot is one step in a larger process, such as capturing a screen and then moving, renaming, converting, or uploading the resulting file. Apple describes Automator workflows as importable into Shortcuts. Automator also provides Run Shell Script, Run AppleScript, and Run JavaScript actions.
- Open Applications > Automator and create a new workflow or application.
- Add the actions required for your process. A shell action can call
screencapturewith a quoted destination; AppleScript or JavaScript can handle additional steps. - Save the workflow with a clear name and test it before depending on it.
- Import the saved Automator workflow into Shortcuts if you want to launch it from a shortcut, menu, or another automation.
- If you need a recurring run, trigger the workflow with the scheduling mechanism available on your macOS version, such as a calendar, login automation, or another locally configured scheduler. Verify the trigger on that Mac rather than assuming every Shortcuts release exposes the same actions.
Do not assume that a specific built-in “take screenshot” action exists or behaves identically in every macOS release. The reliable, source-supported foundation is Automator’s scripting actions plus a locally verified command or script.
Script screenshots with screencapture
The command-line utility captures the screen to a file or the clipboard. The manual lists options for a display (-D), delay (-T), rectangular area (-R), image format (-t), and suppressing the capture sound (-x), along with interactive and window modes.
Delayed file capture
screencapture -x -T 3 "$HOME/Desktop/capture.png"
This requests a three-second delay, suppresses the sound, and writes to an explicit path. The quoted path protects spaces and shell metacharacters.

Useful command patterns
# Capture a selected display (verify the display syntax locally)
screencapture -x -D 2 "$HOME/Desktop/display-2.png"
# Capture a rectangle (x,y,width, height; verify coordinates on your setup)
screencapture -x -R 100,100,1200,800 "$HOME/Desktop/region.png"
# Request a format supported by your installed utility
screencapture -x -t png "$HOME/Desktop/capture.png"
Run man screencapture on the actual Mac before relying on any flag. The commonly circulated manual page is an older copy dated June 16, 2004; that date identifies the hosted manual, not proof that every option is unchanged today. Test a command interactively, confirm the output file, and only then place it in a scheduled workflow.
Make a recurring capture safely
A recurring job needs more than a Screenshot app timer. Decide what should happen if the Mac is locked, asleep, on a different display, or showing a permission dialog.
- Use a stable destination: create the folder first and use an absolute or
$HOME-based path. - Use unique names: include a timestamp in the workflow or rename step so each run does not overwrite the previous file.
- Verify display and geometry: a display number or rectangle can change when monitors are connected, disconnected, or rearranged.
- Keep the Mac available: a sleeping Mac cannot reliably capture what is not being rendered. Test wake and lock behavior for your schedule.
- Grant permissions when prompted: macOS privacy controls may require approval for screen recording, automation, files, or the target application.
- Log failures: have the workflow record an error or notification when the command exits unsuccessfully.
Run several manual trials first. Check the image dimensions, format, destination, timestamp, and whether the intended window or display was actually visible.
Format, destination, and capture-control decisions
PNG, HEIF, or another format
PNG is a broadly compatible choice for interfaces and documentation. On supported Macs with macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot may expose SDR PNG or HDR HEIF choices. If another program cannot open HEIF or HDR data, select PNG or convert it in a later workflow step.

Full screen, window, or region
Full-screen capture is simplest but includes everything visible. Window capture is cleaner when supported by the application. Region capture gives the most control, but fixed coordinates are fragile when resolution, scaling, or window placement changes.
File versus clipboard
Use an explicit file path for unattended automation. Clipboard capture is convenient for an immediate paste but is harder to audit, archive, or process later.
Troubleshooting automated Mac screenshots
The timer did not repeat
That is expected from the documented Screenshot app behavior. Build a workflow and connect it to a verified recurring trigger instead of treating the timer as a scheduler.
No file appeared
Confirm the selected Save to location, directory permissions, spelling and quoting of the path, and whether the workflow ran under the same user account. Test with a simple path under your home folder.

The command reports an unknown option
Read man screencapture on that Mac and remove or replace the flag. Do not copy a flag set from an older macOS installation without testing it.
The wrong display or region was captured
Check display numbering, scaled resolution, monitor arrangement, and window placement. Prefer interactive capture while diagnosing, then update the script’s -D or -R values.
A window is blank or unavailable
The application may block window capture; Apple specifically notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may prevent it. Try full-screen or region capture where permitted.
Automation stops at a permission prompt
Run the workflow manually and approve the requested Screen Recording, Automation, or Files and Folders permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Re-test after changing permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Mac Screenshot timer take a screenshot every hour?
Not according to Apple’s documented Screenshot app options. The timer delays an individual capture; use a verified workflow and scheduler for recurring captures.
Do I need a new keyboard or capture card?
No. The documented shortcuts, Screenshot app, Automator, Shortcuts, and screencapture utility are software features built into macOS.
Why should I check the screencapture manual locally?
The available manual copy is old, and command behavior can vary by macOS version. Confirm flags and test the command on the Mac that will run it.
