How to Convert Screenshots to Text on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and with Google Lens

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To convert a screenshot to text, open it in a tool with optical character recognition (OCR), select the recognized words, and copy them into the app where you need them. On iPhone or iPad, use Live Text in Photos; on Mac, use Copy Text in Photos; on Windows, use Text actions in Snipping Tool; and for supported image workflows, use Google Lens. Check the pasted result against the screenshot—especially names, numbers, punctuation, and line breaks—before relying on it.

What it means to convert a screenshot to text

A screenshot is an image, so its words are not automatically selectable like text in a document or webpage. OCR, short for optical character recognition, identifies text in an image and makes it possible to select and copy the recognized result. The operating-system and app workflows below can take you from an existing screenshot to clipboard text without retyping it.

OCR recognizes the appearance of characters; it does not guarantee that the copied result will match the image exactly or retain its original layout. Treat the output as a draft to review, not as a verified transcription.

Copy text from a screenshot on iPhone or iPad

Use Live Text in Photos

  1. Open the screenshot in the Photos app.
  2. Touch and hold a word in the image. When selection handles appear, drag them to cover the passage you need.
  3. Tap Copy, then paste the text into Notes, Messages, a document, or another destination.

Apple says Live Text on iPhone requires iPhone XS or XR, or a later model, with iOS 15 or later. iPad compatibility varies by model and operating system; check Apple’s current compatibility information for your particular iPad. Apple Support’s Copy and translate text from photos on your iPhone or iPad page, published May 5, 2026, describes the workflow.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

If Live Text does not appear

  • Check Settings > General > Language & Region and make sure Live Text is enabled.
  • Confirm that the device and operating system meet the compatibility requirements.
  • Try a clearer image or crop closer to the text while retaining enough surrounding context to distinguish similar characters.

To select words in a video, pause on the frame containing the text first. Apple specifies iOS 16 or later or iPadOS 16 or later for Live Text in video. Apple also documents Speak Selection for reading Live Text aloud; that can help when listening is more useful than copying.

Extract text from a screenshot in Windows

Use Snipping Tool’s Text actions

  1. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S and drag over the part of the screen you want to capture.
  2. Open the resulting snip in Snipping Tool.
  3. Select Text actions, then choose the recognized passage to copy or select Copy all text.
  4. Paste the result into your destination app and compare it with the image.

Microsoft says Snipping Tool performs this text recognition locally on the device. It also documents a Quick redact action for email addresses or phone numbers. These are Snipping Tool features; do not assume the same processing or redaction behavior for other OCR apps.

When you already have a screenshot file

If the screenshot is already saved, open it in Snipping Tool and use Text actions where available. If that entry point is not present in your version or workflow, capture the relevant area with the shortcut above and open the new snip in the tool. The exact controls can depend on the installed Windows version and app.

Copy text from a screenshot with Google Lens

Google documents copying text from a photo with Lens in the Google app on Android and iOS. It also documents Lens in desktop Chrome for selecting content visible on a webpage. The entry point and labels may differ by device, app version, and whether you are working from a saved photo or an open webpage, so follow the text-selection controls presented in your version of Lens and copy the selection to the clipboard.

Lens is useful when the image is already on a phone or when you are working with visible webpage content in desktop Chrome. Google’s guidance does not establish that every Lens workflow processes images in the same place, so do not infer a general local-processing guarantee from the availability of the feature.

Copy text from a screenshot on Mac

  1. Open the photo or screenshot in Photos.
  2. Position the pointer over the words you want to copy.
  3. Control-click the text selection and choose Copy Text, or press Command-C.
  4. Paste the copied text where you need it.

Apple’s Use Live Text to interact with text in a photo on Mac guide also describes contextual actions such as Look Up, Translate, web search, and sharing. Translation is not available for all languages or regions, according to Apple.

Which screenshot-to-text method should you use?

Situation Good starting point What to consider
Screenshot saved on a supported iPhone or iPad Live Text in Photos iPhone support starts at XS or XR with iOS 15; iPad compatibility varies by model and OS.
Text visible on a Windows screen Snipping Tool Use Text actions after making a snip. Microsoft says recognition runs locally on the device.
Photo on an Android or iOS device Google Lens in the Google app Controls may vary by app version and image workflow.
Screenshot or photo open in Mac Photos Copy Text in Photos Control-click the selection or use Command-C.
Text visible in desktop Chrome Lens in Chrome Google documents selecting visible webpage content; the steps can vary with the interface.

Choose based on where the image is and which tools your device supports. If keeping recognition on-device is important, Microsoft’s explicit local-processing statement applies to Snipping Tool’s feature. Apple documents copying and additional Live Text actions, while Google documents Lens text copying from photos and visible webpage content.

Improve OCR results and preserve useful context

  • Start with a sharp image. If letters are blurred or too small to distinguish, recapture the screen or use a higher-quality source when possible.
  • Crop deliberately. Remove unrelated interface clutter, but leave enough context to tell similar characters apart and understand which words belong together.
  • Keep tables and columns in view. Copying recognized words does not establish that the original layout will be reproduced. Include relevant row or column context and check the order of the pasted text.
  • Proofread critical details. Verify names, dates, prices, codes, phone numbers, punctuation, and symbols against the original before using them in a form, message, report, or record.
  • Check the destination. Some apps may change line breaks or spacing when you paste. Compare the pasted text with the image rather than assuming that formatting survived.

The official how-to pages described here do not provide a relevant, named OCR accuracy benchmark. There is no responsible universal accuracy percentage to apply to every screenshot, language, font, or image condition.

Troubleshoot common screenshot-to-text problems

No text-selection controls appear

First check that the image is open in a supported app and that the feature is available for your device and operating system. On iPhone or iPad, check Live Text in Settings > General > Language & Region and confirm compatibility. On Windows, open the snip in Snipping Tool and look for Text actions.

  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.

The copied result has missing or incorrect characters

Use a clearer or more tightly cropped image, then select the text again. Inspect similar-looking characters and all high-consequence values against the screenshot; OCR output is not a substitute for verification.

Words arrive in the wrong order or without the original layout

Preserve enough of the image to see the relevant columns or rows, select a smaller passage if needed, and compare the copied sequence with the screenshot. The documented copy workflows do not promise a faithful reconstruction of a table or page layout.

Live Text is unavailable in a video

Pause on the frame that contains the text and check the operating-system requirement: Apple specifies iOS 16 or later or iPadOS 16 or later for text in video. For an unsupported device or version, use an available still-image workflow instead.

Looking for Microsoft Lens on Android?

Microsoft’s Lens for Android documentation says retirement began January 9, 2026, and support ended after February 9, 2026. It is legacy guidance, not a current general download recommendation. Android users can start with the Google Lens workflow documented for the Google app.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not an OCR service: it captures a webpage as an image or PDF, so you still need an OCR tool such as the methods above to extract words from its screenshot. If the page you want to read is online, a single GET request can create the screenshot first. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These features can simplify obtaining a clean webpage capture, but the copied text still comes from your separate OCR step.

ScreenshotNeo is the publisher’s screenshot API. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will OCR keep the exact formatting of a screenshot?

The copy workflows described here do not promise exact formatting. Check the pasted order, spacing, and line breaks against the image, especially for tables and columns.

Can I rely on OCR for handwriting or every language?

The cited platform guides do not establish universal support or accuracy for handwriting and every language. Check the result carefully, and use a different transcription workflow if the characters are not reliably recognized.
