Short answer: install the Kapture Chromium extension, configure an MCP-compatible client to run Kapture’s bridge, connect a browser tab, and then issue navigation, clicking, form-filling, inspection, and screenshot requests through your client. Kapture is an open-source project that joins a browser extension to an MCP server over a local WebSocket connection. The bridge is the simplest supported setup because it translates the client’s stdio connection and manages the WebSocket server for you.
What Kapture does
The Kapture project describes itself as “a Chrome DevTools Extension that enables browser automation through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).” Its architecture has three parts:
- Browser extension: runs inside a Chromium-based browser and operates only on tabs you connect.
- Local Kapture server: exchanges commands with the extension over WebSocket on localhost port 61822.
- MCP client: an AI application such as Claude Desktop, Cline, or another MCP-compatible client that sends tool calls.
Multiple AI clients can use one server and the same connected tabs. The browser is not controlled until you explicitly connect a tab from the Kapture toolbar or its DevTools panel.
Prerequisites and version notes
- One supported Chromium browser: Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, or Vivaldi.
- An MCP-compatible AI client.
- Node.js. The usage guide lists Node.js 16 or newer for the
npxroute, while the repository README asks for Node.js 18 or newer. Because the project documentation differs, use Node.js 18+ when possible and check the current guide if your environment is older. - Permission to install a browser extension and run a local process.
Kapture is software; the documented workflow does not require dedicated hardware or paid accessories.

Install the browser extension
Chrome Web Store installation
- Open the Kapture listing in the Chrome Web Store.
- Select Add to Chrome and confirm the permission prompt.
- Pin Kapture from the browser’s extensions menu so its toolbar control is easy to reach.
This route avoids developer-mode warnings and is the normal choice for everyday use.
Manual, unpacked installation
- Download or clone the Kapture project source.
- Open
chrome://extensions/in the browser. - Enable Developer mode.
- Select Load unpacked and choose the extension folder from the project.
Manual installation is useful when you need a development checkout or a version not yet published in the store. The project notes that Chromium may display developer-mode warnings for an unpacked extension.
Configure an MCP client with the recommended bridge
The recommended client configuration starts the bridge through npx. Add this server entry to your client’s MCP configuration:

Kapture’s usage guide documents examples for Claude Desktop and Cline/VS Code; follow that guide’s current path rather than copying a path from an older client version.

The bridge command provides the stdio-to-WebSocket translation expected by clients that support a standard MCP server command. It also handles starting and stopping the underlying Kapture process, so you do not normally need a separate terminal window or a manually entered WebSocket URL.
Advanced option: manage the WebSocket server yourself
Use direct WebSocket mode when your client supports WebSocket transport or when you need to control server startup independently.

Connect a tab before sending commands
- Open the target website in a supported browser tab.
- Select the Kapture toolbar icon, or open the Kapture panel in DevTools.
- Use the connect toggle for that tab.
- Confirm that Kapture shows a connected indicator.
- In your MCP client, ask it to perform a small read operation, such as inspecting the page title, before attempting a multi-step workflow.
Only connected tabs are available to the MCP client. You can connect or disconnect tabs as your workflow changes. If several clients share the server, make the target tab explicit in your requests to avoid operating on the wrong page.
What you can automate
The documented tool set covers these groups:
- Navigation and history: open URLs and move backward or forward.
- Element interaction: click controls, fill fields, select or interact with page elements.
- Tab management: create, switch, inspect, and close tabs.
- Page inspection: read page structure and DOM information.
- Screenshots: capture the connected tab for visual verification.
- Diagnostics: inspect console output and network activity.
- Composite sequences: use

Tool names and parameters can change, so inspect the live Kapture tool reference exposed by your MCP client before writing prompts or application code. A compose sequence stops at the first failure. Its final step can be a supported read, such as a screenshot or DOM inspection, to verify the preceding actions.
A reliable prompt pattern
Give the client the connected tab, the exact target, and an observable result:
Use the connected tab. Open https://example.com, click the button with accessible name “Sign in”, fill the email field with the supplied test address, and then take a screenshot so I can verify the result. Stop and report the first failed action.For production workflows, prefer stable IDs, labels, roles, or narrowly scoped CSS selectors over text that changes. Wait for a specific selector or page state instead of assuming that an animation or network request has finished.
Dynamic pages, selectors, and multi-step workflows
Wait for the page state
Modern sites often render content after the initial navigation. Ask Kapture to wait for a distinctive selector, allow a deliberate delay when an animation is unavoidable, or use a network-idle condition where the tool supports it. A screenshot taken before the content appears can look like a failed automation even when navigation succeeded.

Use specific targets
Choose a unique selector or accessible label. If several elements match, narrow the scope to a container or ask the client to inspect the DOM first. Avoid relying on an element’s position, which can change with responsive layouts.
Verify every important transition
After login, form submission, or navigation, read a title, URL, visible status, or DOM element. End a compose sequence with a screenshot or inspection step when visual or structural confirmation matters.
Privacy and permissions
Kapture’s privacy policy, updated June 2026, says the extension may access a connected tab’s URL and title, DOM and page content, console logs, screenshots, and form values when a command requests them. It describes communication with localhost on port 61822 and browser permissions including debugger and <all_urls>. The policy says users can connect or disconnect tabs and that JavaScript execution is enabled only when the user chooses to allow it.
Those are statements from the project’s policy, not an independent security audit. Do not connect pages containing secrets unless your client, prompts, logs, and local machine are under your control. Treat form values and screenshots as sensitive data, and disconnect a tab when the task is complete.

Troubleshooting
The MCP client cannot start Kapture
Cause: Node.js is missing, too old, or npx is unavailable. Fix: install a current Node.js release (18+ avoids the documented minimum-version discrepancy), verify node --version and npx --version, then restart the client.
The server starts but no tab is available
Cause: the extension is installed but the tab is not connected. Fix: open the Kapture toolbar control or DevTools panel, enable the tab connection, and wait for the connected indicator.

WebSocket connection refused
Cause: direct mode is configured but npx kapture-mcp is not running, or another local policy blocks port 61822. Fix: start the server, confirm the exact endpoint ws://localhost:61822/mcp, and use the bridge instead if your client expects stdio.
A click or fill action fails
Cause: the selector matches nothing, matches multiple elements, or the page has not finished rendering. Fix: inspect the DOM, use a unique selector or accessible name, wait for the target, and retry with the tab still connected.
The screenshot is blank or stale
Cause: capture occurred during navigation, an animation, or lazy rendering. Fix: wait for a meaningful selector or stable page state, then capture again. Check console and network inspection tools when the page itself failed to load.
A composed workflow stops halfway
Cause: compose stops at the first failed command. Fix: identify the failed step, run it alone, correct its selector or wait condition, and then rerun the sequence. Keep a final screenshot or DOM read as the verification step.

Can Kapture control Firefox?
The installation documentation names Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi—Chromium-based browsers. Firefox is not listed as supported in the supplied documentation.
Does Kapture run browser actions in the cloud?
