Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a direct DOCX-to-PDF request, ConvertAPI documents a multipart upload endpoint and a card-free trial allowance of 250 conversions for new accounts. CloudConvert takes a different approach: its quickstart builds a job from import, convert, and export tasks, while its sandbox is restricted to whitelisted files and intended for development. Neither description establishes a permanent free production plan or guarantees how a particular DOCX will render. Check representative files and the current provider terms before relying on either service.
Choose the kind of free access you actually need
“Free API” can mean a limited trial for live conversions or a development sandbox that is not meant for unrestricted production work. The two options documented here offer different models:
| Service | Request model | Documented free access | Result retrieval |
|---|---|---|---|
| ConvertAPI | Send the DOCX as multipart form data to its DOCX-to-PDF conversion route. | Its Getting Started page says new accounts include a card-free trial with 250 conversions. The page does not establish that the allowance recurs or that a permanent free production plan exists. | With StoreFile=true, the response provides a download URL documented as available for three hours. Without that option, the result is returned inline as Base64. |
| CloudConvert | Create a job with an import task, a convert task, and an export task. | Its API introduction describes an unlimited-jobs-and-tasks sandbox restricted to whitelisted files and intended for development. That is not unlimited unrestricted live conversion. | The quickstart sample exports a URL. |
For a simple direct upload, ConvertAPI’s documented model has fewer orchestration steps. For an integration already organized around CloudConvert jobs, its import/convert/export workflow may fit better. These are workflow distinctions, not claims about speed, output fidelity, or overall service quality.

Convert a DOCX with ConvertAPI
The documented flow is: obtain an API credential, upload the document in a multipart File field, request the DOCX-to-PDF route, then save the returned PDF using either the temporary download URL or inline Base64 response. The guide uses Bearer-token authentication. Keep that token on a server or in a secret manager rather than placing it in browser code or a public repository.
Request shape
The guide identifies the route as /convert/docx/to/pdf, the upload field as File, and the optional StoreFile=true behavior. Confirm the live endpoint host, any required request parameters, and the current schema in ConvertAPI’s OpenAPI documentation before deploying. The following cURL shows the documented multipart and Bearer-auth pattern; supply the exact endpoint URL and any additional fields specified by the live DOCX-to-PDF schema:
curl -X POST "CONVERTAPI_DOCX_TO_PDF_ENDPOINT"
-H "Authorization: Bearer $CONVERTAPI_TOKEN"
-F "[email protected]"
-F "StoreFile=true"
-o response.json
Because this request asks for a stored file, inspect the JSON response and download the PDF from its returned URL before the documented three-hour availability window expires. The example saves the API response as JSON; it is not itself the PDF. If you omit StoreFile=true, the guide says the response contains the output inline as Base64, which your application must decode and write as a PDF file. Do not assume a download URL exists in that mode.

Implementation checklist
- Create an account and retrieve its API credential. Treat the credential as secret configuration.
- Check the current endpoint-specific schema for the required URL, authentication header, multipart field names, and response format.
- Send a representative DOCX using the multipart upload field. Ensure the file stream is read as binary, not transformed as text.
- Parse the response according to the selected output mode: fetch the temporary URL, or decode Base64 bytes.
- Validate the downloaded file as a PDF and compare its pages and layout with the source document.
Consult the ConvertAPI Office-to-PDF page and its OpenAPI schema for current language examples and endpoint parameters. The code pattern above intentionally does not guess the endpoint hostname or response JSON keys.

CloudConvert’s quickstart uses three linked tasks. The import task brings a DOCX into the job, the convert task changes it to PDF, and the export task makes the output retrievable. Its published quickstart demonstrates importing from a URL and exporting a URL; it also describes provider storage integrations. The exact task payload and authentication details should come from the current quickstart rather than being inferred from another service’s request format.
- Create a job and configure an
importtask for the DOCX source. Use the import path supported by your application, such as the URL-import flow shown in the quickstart. - Add a
converttask that consumes the imported file and sets PDF as the output format. - Add an
exporttask that consumes the converted PDF. - Submit the job using the documented authentication method, then inspect its task results and retrieve the exported URL.
Use CloudConvert’s Quickstart Guide for the current request example and API introduction to understand the sandbox boundary. The cited documentation establishes the job structure, not a universal production quota or a guarantee that arbitrary input URLs are allowed in the sandbox.

Verify the output before depending on it
A successful API response only shows that a conversion request completed; it does not establish that every feature of the source DOCX was preserved exactly. No comparative output-quality benchmark is established by the service documentation cited here. Run a test set drawn from your actual documents, especially if users depend on precise pagination or layout.
- Check page count, page breaks, margins, headers, and footers.
- Inspect fonts and line wrapping, including documents with less common fonts or complex styles.
- Review tables, images, charts, embedded objects, and footnotes where those matter to the use case.
- Open the PDF in the viewers your users rely on and check that text is readable and selectable when required.
Compare the result with the source in a visual review or a document-specific validation process. A successful conversion should not be treated as proof of perfect fidelity.

The cited setup and quickstart documentation do not comprehensively settle current production pricing, recurring quotas, file-size or page limits, retention, privacy terms, data residency, or regional processing for a particular account. Verify those details in each provider’s current official terms before selecting an API for confidential documents or estimating recurring production costs. The 250-conversion ConvertAPI allowance is described as a new-account trial; CloudConvert’s sandbox is development-oriented and file-restricted.

Authentication is rejected
Check that the token is present in the Bearer authorization header and has not been copied with extra spaces or exposed incorrectly. Keep credentials server-side. For provider-specific token setup and error details, follow the current official API documentation.
The API reports a missing file
For ConvertAPI, verify that the multipart field is named File, that the path is correct, and that the process has permission to read it. For CloudConvert, verify that the import task points to an accessible source and that later tasks consume the correct task output.

The response is JSON, not a PDF
With ConvertAPI’s stored-file option, the response provides a URL; save and fetch that URL rather than writing the JSON response bytes as a PDF. Without that option, decode the inline Base64 output. With CloudConvert, follow the export task result to retrieve the file.
A stored download link no longer works
ConvertAPI documents the stored result URL as available for three hours. Retrieve and persist the PDF within that window; do not treat the URL as permanent storage.
The PDF layout differs from the DOCX
Check the same source document in your local authoring software and the generated output for font substitution, pagination, and complex elements. Test with realistic files and decide whether the differences are acceptable; the API documentation does not promise perfect formatting.
A CloudConvert sandbox request will not accept the file
The documented sandbox is restricted to whitelisted files. Do not interpret its unlimited jobs and tasks as permission for arbitrary inputs or unrestricted production conversion. Use its documented development constraints and verify the current production terms separately.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a DOCX-to-PDF converter. It is relevant when the input is a web page you want captured as an image or PDF, rather than a Word document. For that different task, one GET request can capture a page; the API accepts clean-up options such as consent-banner handling, and the documentation covers the request parameters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a free DOCX-to-PDF API be used indefinitely in production?
The cited free-access descriptions establish a trial allowance for ConvertAPI and a restricted development sandbox for CloudConvert, not a permanent unrestricted production entitlement. Check each provider’s current terms for your account.
Does a successful API conversion guarantee an identical PDF?
No. The cited documentation explains request mechanics, not perfect rendering or a comparative fidelity result. Validate representative documents against your layout requirements.
