The official Browser Use MCP server is documented in the browser-use/browser-use GitHub project. You can run it locally as an MCP-launched stdio process with uvx --from 'browser-use[cli]' browser-use --mcp, or connect an MCP client to Browser Use’s hosted HTTP service. For new hosted connections, use https://api.browser-use.com/v3/mcp and send your key in the x-browser-use-api-key header. The local and hosted modes are different products operationally, so choose one before configuring Claude, Cursor, Windsurf or another MCP client.
Verify you have the real Browser Use repository
Search results contain similarly named projects. The integration instructions covered here belong to the official Browser Use project at github.com/browser-use/browser-use. The project’s README is also published at github.com/hoursfu/browser-use; use the integration reference for the explicit current launch command.
Browser Use’s MCP integration is an interface for browser navigation, clicking, typing, scrolling, tab management, page-state inspection, extraction and session cleanup. It is not a browser extension that you install from GitHub.

The repository integration page contains an older cloud URL in an example. The current cloud guide is the authoritative source for hosted setup and uses the versioned /v3/mcp endpoint: official cloud MCP setup.

Install prerequisites for a local server
- Install
uv, which provides theuvxrunner, and make sure it is on the PATH visible to your MCP client. - Have an
OPENAI_API_KEYorANTHROPIC_API_KEYavailable for the model provider you select. - Use a supported desktop MCP client, such as Claude Desktop, Cursor or Windsurf, and know where that client reads its JSON configuration.
- Decide whether the browser should be visible or headless and whether a persistent Chrome profile is appropriate.
On macOS or Linux, if a client reports that it cannot find uvx, run which uvx in a terminal and put that full path in the configuration instead of the bare command.
Run the local Browser Use MCP server
The integration reference labels this a “Free, self-hosted stdio-based server.” Start it manually to verify your installation:
uvx --from 'browser-use[cli]' browser-use --mcpNormally you do not keep this terminal process running yourself. Your MCP client starts the command when it opens the server, communicates over standard input/output, and stops it when the connection closes. A local configuration therefore has a command and args, not a server URL.
Claude Desktop configuration
Add an entry to Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration (the exact file location varies by operating system):

}Replace the command path and key. You may use ANTHROPIC_API_KEY instead when configuring an Anthropic-backed workflow. Restart Claude Desktop after saving the file, then inspect its MCP tools list. The repository README shows a shorter command form, but the explicit integration reference above is preferable when package syntax differs between releases.
Cursor and Windsurf
Both clients accept an MCP server definition in their MCP settings. Create a server named browser-use, select a command-based or stdio transport, set the command to your full uvx path, and pass these arguments in order:

Add the model-provider key as an environment variable, save, and reload the client. If the client offers an importable JSON editor, the Claude Desktop object above can be adapted directly.
Connect an MCP client to the hosted server
Hosted mode avoids installing the CLI and runs the browser in Browser Use’s cloud environment. Create a Browser Use API key in the Browser Use account, then configure your client for Streamable HTTP at:

Client terminology differs: look for “HTTP,” “Streamable HTTP,” or a remote MCP server rather than “stdio.” The cloud setup guide provides current examples for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and Windsurf.
Claude Code example
Use the client’s HTTP transport command, then ensure the generated or edited server entry includes the current URL and the API-key header. Do not copy the repository’s older unversioned endpoint without checking the cloud guide first.
What hosted sessions do
Browser Use describes the hosted server as handing a whole task to an agent on a cloud browser and returning the result. This is different from local mode’s direct, step-by-step control of your own browser and profile. Hosted runs may also incur model-token charges; Browser Use’s product page currently publishes a browser-time price of $0.02 per hour. It also reports an internal, vendor-published result of 82% of 106 tasks at 17¢ per solved task (Browser Use, 2026); that is not an independent benchmark.
Configure browser behavior and security
The official MCP manifest exposes settings for workspace directory, headless and stealth modes, persistent Chrome profile directory, provider and model selection, vision, deterministic rendering, viewport expansion, allowed domains, sensitive-data masking, browser type, timeout, wait intervals and maximum agent steps.

false, stealthfalse, Chromium, a 30,000 ms timeout and a 100-step maximum. - Sensitive-data masking defaults to enabled. Keep it enabled unless you have a specific, reviewed reason to change it.
- A persistent profile stores authenticated session state. Point it only at a profile directory you intend the agent to use and protect that directory like credentials.
BROWSER_USE_DISABLE_SECURITY=truedisables security controls. The manifest marks this “Use with caution”; do not make it a routine fix for connection errors.- Use allowed-domain controls and a finite step limit when an agent should operate within a narrow site or task.
Test the connection safely
- Reload the MCP client after changing configuration.
- Ask it to list or describe the Browser Use tools. A successful handshake should expose browser actions and extraction/session tools.
- Start with a public, non-sensitive page and ask for its title or visible text.
- Try one navigation and one read-only extraction before allowing clicks, form entry or a persistent logged-in profile.
- Review the client log if the server disappears; stdio startup errors are usually printed there rather than in the chat.
Troubleshoot common failures
“uvx: command not found” or server never starts
The MCP client cannot see your shell’s PATH. Install uv, run which uvx, and replace command with the absolute path. Restart the client completely.
Package or extra-dependency error
Use the quoted extra exactly as shown: --from 'browser-use[cli]'. In JSON, keep it one argument as "browser-use[cli]"; do not split the brackets into separate arguments.
Authentication or model errors
For local mode, verify that the environment variable is attached to the MCP server entry, not merely exported in an unrelated terminal. Use either OPENAI_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and check that the key has model access. For hosted mode, verify the x-browser-use-api-key header and the exact /v3/mcp URL.
Client says the remote endpoint is invalid
Select Streamable HTTP (or the client’s equivalent HTTP MCP transport), not stdio. Confirm that the client supports custom headers and that no proxy is stripping them.

The browser opens but actions time out
Increase the documented timeout or wait interval, wait for a specific page condition, and reduce the task to fewer steps. Slow sites, login interstitials and bot checks can require a visible browser and an explicit wait. Keep the 100-step maximum unless a reviewed task genuinely needs more.
Unexpected account or privacy exposure
Stop the run, remove the persistent profile path, rotate exposed credentials and restrict allowed domains. Do not disable security as a shortcut. Use a separate browser profile for automation.
Local versus hosted: a practical decision
- Choose local when the task must use your existing logged-in browser context, local files or direct step-by-step control, and you can manage the runtime and model key.
- Choose hosted when you want a cloud browser to execute a complete task and return a result, or when installing and maintaining the CLI on each workstation is undesirable.
- Check data requirements first. A local persistent profile and a hosted browser session have different ownership and handling implications; neither should receive credentials you would not intentionally expose to an automation agent.

Keep the setup maintainable
- Pin a tested
uvenvironment or record the date and package command used, because CLI syntax can change. - Keep local model keys and profile directories out of source control and team-shared configuration files.
- Use a small public-page smoke test after upgrades, then test authenticated workflows in a disposable profile.
- Recheck the hosted endpoint, tool inventory, pricing and client examples in the current cloud documentation before deploying a production integration.
