1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Outlook does not show a rich card for a URL, first identify which Outlook you use and whether the problem is a missing card, an unclickable link, or ordinary message-preview text. New Outlook, classic Outlook for Windows, and Outlook on the web do not expose the same controls. In New Outlook, check the Link preview setting, restart the app, and compare the result in Outlook on the web. If the URL itself cannot be clicked, use the separate security and message-format checks instead.
Identify the Outlook client and the exact symptom
“Outlook desktop” can mean New Outlook for Windows or classic Outlook for Windows. A rich link preview is a card containing some combination of a page title, thumbnail, and description. It is different from the Reading Pane and from the short text snippet shown beside a message in a message list.
| What you see | Likely feature | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| No title, image, or description card appears while composing | Link preview | Check the Link preview control in New Outlook, then test the same account in Outlook on the web. |
| The URL is visible but cannot be opened | Link security or message format | Use the Junk email security check in New Outlook, or inspect plain-text and InfoBar controls in classic Outlook. |
| A message list shows or hides a short preview | Message-list display setting | Adjust message-display options; changing Link preview will not change this. |
| The Reading Pane is missing or positioned differently | Reading Pane display | Change Reading Pane settings; this is unrelated to rich URL cards. |
Fix a missing card in New Outlook for Windows
1. Check the Link preview setting
- Open New Outlook.
- Open Settings, then go to Mail > Compose and reply.
- Look for the Link preview control, usually labelled Preview links in email, if it is available in your build or account.
- Turn it on and save the setting.
- Compose a new message and paste a complete public URL, including
https://. Allow a moment for Outlook to retrieve the page information.
Microsoft’s documented setting is explicitly described for Outlook.com and Outlook on the web. New Outlook uses web-rendered components, so the control and behavior can vary by app build, account, or tenant. Do not assume that seeing a similarly named option means every desktop version supports the same preview behavior.
2. Toggle, fully close, and reopen
A Microsoft external staff moderator has suggested this sequence for New Outlook problems: turn Link preview off, fully close New Outlook, reopen it, and turn Link preview on again. “Fully close” means exit the application rather than leaving its window running in the background. Test with a public page after reopening. This is a community troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed fix; some users have reported that the first toggle did not resolve the issue.

3. Compare with Outlook on the web
Sign in to Outlook on the web with the same account and try the identical URL in a new message. If the card appears on the web but not in New Outlook, the difference points to the Windows app rather than the mailbox setting. If neither client creates a card, the URL, account policy, or service response may be preventing retrieval.
4. Reset the New Outlook app only after comparison
If the web version works and the desktop app still does not, the same community guidance suggests resetting New Outlook from Windows app settings and checking that the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is installed and current. Resetting can remove local app state, so record any app-specific preferences first. Microsoft does not promise that a reset or WebView2 update will restore previews in every build.
When the link itself is unclickable
A missing card and a disabled hyperlink are separate problems. Do not keep changing Link preview settings when the URL cannot be selected or opened.
New Outlook security option
- Open Settings.
- Go to Mail > Junk email > Security options.
- Review Block attachments, pictures, and links from anyone not in my Safe senders and domains list.
- If that protection is blocking a trusted sender or test message, clear it only when your organization’s policy permits, then save.
Security settings can be controlled by an administrator. If the option is unavailable or returns after you change it, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator rather than repeatedly changing the preview setting.

Classic Outlook message checks
In classic Outlook, determine whether the message is plain text. Plain-text messages do not provide the same rich formatting as HTML messages. Also look for an InfoBar stating that links or external content are disabled; use the InfoBar control to enable the content when the message is trusted and your policy allows it.
The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not confirm a universal rich-link-preview switch for classic Outlook for Windows. The Outlook.com or New Outlook instructions therefore cannot be promised to exist in classic Outlook. If a trusted HTML message still has no clickable URL after the plain-text and InfoBar checks, note your Outlook build and organization policy and contact Microsoft support.
Do not confuse cards with message previews
Rich link cards
These are generated from the destination page and can include its title, thumbnail, and description. They normally matter while composing or displaying a message that contains a URL.
Message-list preview text
The line of text shown beside a subject in the Inbox is a message-list display feature. It reflects message content, not a fetched website card. Changing it will not make a thumbnail appear in a draft.

Reading Pane
The Reading Pane controls where message content is displayed after you select a message. Turning it on or off does not enable link cards and does not repair a disabled hyperlink.
A controlled test that separates account, URL, and app problems
- Use a complete, publicly reachable
https://URL that does not require a sign-in, CAPTCHA, or corporate network. - Paste it into a new message in New Outlook and wait for the card attempt to finish.
- Repeat with the same account in Outlook on the web.
- If possible, test a second public URL. A single site may block automated metadata requests or return incomplete metadata.
- Record whether the result is a card, plain clickable URL, disabled URL, or no response.
This test avoids attributing a website-specific failure to Outlook. Do not use a private intranet address as your first test: authentication, firewall rules, or tenant policies can prevent metadata retrieval even when Outlook is functioning normally.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Cause to consider | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The setting is missing | You may be in classic Outlook, or your New Outlook build or tenant does not expose the control. | Confirm the client. Compare with Outlook on the web; do not assume the web setting applies to classic Outlook. |
| Toggle changes nothing | Local app state, WebView2 rendering, or a service-side limitation. | Fully close and reopen New Outlook, compare with the web client, then consider an app reset and WebView2 check. |
| Only one website fails | The site may require authentication, block retrieval, or provide insufficient metadata. | Test another public URL before changing Outlook settings. |
| The card is absent but the URL opens | Preview generation failed while hyperlink handling still works. | Treat this as a preview problem, not a link-security problem; use the client comparison steps. |
| The URL cannot be clicked | New Outlook security filtering, classic Outlook plain text, or disabled external content. | Follow the appropriate security, message-format, and InfoBar checks. |
| Inbox snippets changed, but drafts did not | Message-list display settings were changed. | Return to the Link preview diagnosis; the two features are independent. |
What to record before contacting support
- Whether you use New Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows, or Outlook on the web.
- Whether the failure occurs while composing, reading a received message, or only in the message list.
- Whether the URL is clickable.
- The exact setting labels visible under Settings > Mail > Compose and reply.
- Whether the same URL works in Outlook on the web.
- Whether a second public URL behaves differently.
- Your Outlook build and any organization policy that controls external links or content.

If your goal is to capture a clean image of a public Outlook-related page, documentation page, or other URL for a ticket, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—can be used by Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.
For public URLs, the one-call examples are:
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the target URL with the public page you need to document. ScreenshotNeo also supports custom headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, CSS or JavaScript, selector-based capture, full-page lazy-image loading, PDF output, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API. Do not send private mailbox credentials to a screenshot service unless your security policy explicitly permits it.

Can a company administrator disable link previews?
Policies can affect external links, content retrieval, and available settings. If a control is missing or cannot be changed, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator which policy applies.
Why does a URL show a title but no thumbnail?
A destination can expose text metadata without an image suitable for a card. Test another public page before treating the behavior as an Outlook defect.
Does resetting New Outlook delete messages?
The troubleshooting guidance concerns resetting local app state. Confirm how your organization handles local settings and cached data before using the reset option, and verify synchronization afterward.
Can Outlook create previews for private intranet links?
There is no universal guarantee. Authentication, network access, security policy, and the destination’s metadata response all affect whether a card can be generated.
