3. Dark mode / night reader: best for simple inversion
Dark mode / night reader is the simplest of the three options. Its listing describes five modes:
- Inversion with reduced contrast.
- Inversion with normal contrast.

Choose by site exceptions
All three listings describe per-site behavior. Before installing, list domains that must remain unchanged—financial dashboards, design tools, medical portals, or sites with color-coded data—and confirm that the extension can disable itself for each one.
Choose by PDFs and media

Choose by privacy wording
Dark Reader says its developer will not collect or use user data. Night Eye describes local transformation and says data is not sold, while its store privacy panel identifies personally identifiable information as handled. Dark mode / night reader says it does not upload data. These statements use different wording and are not equivalent to an independent audit. Review permissions, the publisher identity, update history, and the current privacy panel before granting access.
Installation and a safe first configuration
- Open the Chrome Web Store and search for the exact extension name and publisher. Check the listing’s current version, update date, permissions, and privacy section.
- Select Add to Chrome, then confirm the permission prompt only after reading it.
- Pin the extension from Chrome’s Extensions menu so its controls are easy to reach.
- Open a representative set of pages: a text-heavy article, a web application, a code block, an image gallery, and a PDF.
- Set the default mode, then add site exceptions for pages whose colors or charts become misleading.
- Disable any other dark-mode or color-inverting extension. Conflicting transformations are a common source of broken colors.
- Reload pages after changing a rule. Some single-page applications need a full tab refresh before newly injected styles apply.
Troubleshooting
Text is dark but images or logos look wrong
Switch from full inversion to a filtered or theme mode, lower the transformation strength, or add the domain to your exception list. Night Eye’s Filtered mode is the direct alternative to a full Dark mode treatment.
A site becomes unreadable after an update
Open the extension controls, disable it for that site, and reload. Then check whether a site-native dark theme or a second extension is also active. If the problem persists, remove the exception temporarily and test in a clean profile to isolate extension conflicts.
PDF pages stay light
PDF dark mode is specifically listed by Night Eye, but support depends on the browser’s PDF viewer and the document. Try Night Eye, confirm the PDF is opened in Chrome’s viewer, and keep the original view for documents where color fidelity matters.
Scheduling does not follow your routine
Check the extension’s timezone and schedule settings, then compare them with Chrome and operating-system time. A browser or system color-scheme change can also override an extension preference.

Pages load slowly or flicker
Test with the extension disabled, then re-enable it with fewer custom rules. Heavy single-page applications may repaint several times while styles are injected. Keep only one dark-mode transformer enabled and exclude performance-sensitive domains.
A privacy permission is unclear
Read the current Chrome Web Store privacy disclosure and the extension’s own policy. Do not treat a statement such as “runs locally” or “does not upload data” as a substitute for checking the permissions Chrome requests.
