For a free browser extension that captures an entire scrolling webpage, start with Full Page Screen Capture if you want an editor and PNG, JPG, or PDF export: its Chrome Web Store listing says it is free without signup, a watermark, or a premium tier. Those are listing claims, not independent test results. If you only need a screenshot occasionally, first check whether your browser already has a built-in capture option; if you need repeatable captures for code or an AI agent, an API such as ScreenshotNeo is a better fit than an extension.

“Full page” means content below the visible browser area as well as what is on screen. Extensions differ in whether they can capture only the visible area or a selection, edit or redact the result, and export an image or PDF. Free can also have limits: some tools reserve features for upgrades or paid credits. The comparison below separates browser extensions from ScreenshotNeo’s API so you can choose the right workflow.

Which free webpage screenshot option should you choose?

Use a browser extension when you want to capture a page while viewing it and save a file directly. Use an API when you need to request captures from a script or service, or want an MCP server for an AI agent. ScreenshotNeo is the API option to try first: it removes supported consent banners and popups before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It is not a browser extension.

Option Capture and export Free and privacy details
ScreenshotNeo (API/MCP alternative) A GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Its MCP server offers screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools. Free plan: 1,000 shots per month with no card. API service, not a browser extension.
Full Page Screen Capture (Chrome Web Store listing) Full-page capture; built-in editor with crop, annotation, blur/pixelation, redaction, and OCR; PNG, JPG, and PDF. The listing says it is free without signup, watermark, or premium tier. Listing claims have not been independently tested.
GoFullPage (Chrome Web Store listing) Full-page capture. The listing’s September 25, 2026 update records version 8.9 and mentions Chromium 153 URL-requirement fixes and dialog improvements. The listing includes the developer’s statement that it will not collect or use data. Check the live listing for current version, permissions, and disclosures.
FireShot (Chrome Web Store listing) Full-page, visible-area, and selected-area capture; PDF, PNG, and JPEG. The listing describes an upgrade for additional editing and workflow features. It records version 2.1.4.18, updated May 24, 2026.
OpenCapture (vendor product site) Full-page and visible-area capture; crop, annotation, blur, and undo; PNG and PDF. The site says it supports Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. The vendor says capture processing is local and the listed capture/editing features are free. Tiled logo or text watermarking is an optional one-time $5 purchase for 1,000 credits, priced on the product page as accessed September 29, 2026.
Full Page Capture (vendor product site) Its site says the Chrome extension exports PNG, JPEG, or PDF. The vendor says it is free, needs no account, and processes captures locally. These are vendor claims, not independent verification.

For a no-cost extension with editing and no advertised premium tier, the Full Page Screen Capture listing is a reasonable starting point. For a browser other than Chrome, OpenCapture’s site names Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. If selection capture matters, FireShot’s listing explicitly describes it. Compare the current listing and permissions before installing: listings, availability, feature boundaries, and privacy disclosures can change.

How to capture a full webpage with an extension

Exact controls vary by extension and browser version, so use the extension’s current instructions rather than assuming every toolbar or menu has the same label. A typical workflow is:

  1. Open the official browser extension store and find the extension by its exact name. Review the publisher, browser compatibility, recent update, requested permissions, and privacy disclosure before installing.
  2. Install it, then open the webpage you want to capture. Sign in or load the relevant content first if the page requires an account. Do not capture confidential material unless the extension’s permissions and data handling are acceptable for it.
  3. Open the extension from the browser toolbar or extensions menu and choose its full-page mode. Choose visible-area or selection mode instead if you need only the current screen or a portion of it.
  4. Wait for the capture to finish. Long pages can take longer because some extensions scroll and stitch together sections; pages that load content dynamically may not be captured exactly as they appeared during browsing.
  5. Review the result before sharing it. Crop irrelevant areas, blur or redact sensitive text where the extension provides those tools, and verify that the redaction actually obscures the information.
  6. Export in the format that suits the task: use an image for a visual record, or PDF where a document-like file is more useful. Confirm the saved file opens and includes the intended page length.

Choose the right capture mode and file format

Full page, visible area, or selected area

  • Full page: captures content below the visible viewport. It is useful for archiving an article or reviewing a long page, but the result may be affected by scrolling, lazy-loaded images, sticky elements, or content that changes as the page moves.
  • Visible area: records only what is currently shown. Choose it when you need a quick snapshot of a chart, dialog, or above-the-fold layout and do not need the rest of the page.
  • Selected area: captures a chosen region where supported. This can keep the output focused, but it is not the same as a full-page capture.

FireShot’s listing expressly describes all three modes. The Full Page Screen Capture listing describes full-page capture and editor functions; do not assume that another extension offers a specific mode unless its current listing says so.

Image or PDF

PNG is a common choice for a crisp image, JPG/JPEG is available in some extensions, and PDF may be more convenient when the destination expects a document. The product listings and sites covered here mention different combinations: Full Page Screen Capture lists PNG, JPG, and PDF; FireShot lists PDF, PNG, and JPEG; OpenCapture lists PNG and PDF; Full Page Capture lists PNG, JPEG, and PDF. Check the current tool’s export menu before you install if one format is essential.

Privacy, permissions, and sensitive pages

A screenshot extension may need permission to read or capture the page you ask it to process. Before installing, examine the current permission prompt and store privacy disclosure. Before capturing, consider whether the page contains account details, personal information, internal dashboards, or customer data. Avoid capturing or sharing such content unless your organisation permits the extension and destination.

Privacy claims apply to the specific product that makes them. OpenCapture’s site says its processing is local. The GoFullPage store listing contains a developer data-use declaration. Full Page Capture’s site also claims local processing. Those statements are not an independent code audit and do not establish how another extension works. Recheck the current listing because disclosures and permissions can change.

Limits, reliability, and common capture problems

Full-page capture is not a guarantee of a perfect copy. Some extensions scroll the page and stitch sections together. A page may load images only when they approach the viewport, update content while scrolling, or use fixed headers and animations that produce gaps or repeated elements. Restricted pages may also prevent a capture or show a login or access-check screen instead of the content you expected.

The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or misses images

  • Confirm the page finished loading and that you can see the content in the browser before starting the capture.
  • For content that appears only as you scroll, try loading it on the page first, then capture again. The extension may not handle every lazy-loading or dynamic layout correctly.
  • If full-page stitching creates duplicated or missing sections, try a shorter page region, visible-area captures, or the page’s own print/export option if available.
  • Check whether a login, bot check, or other access restriction is blocking the page. Do not assume the extension can bypass it.

The extension will not capture a page or a browser dialog

Some browser pages and protected content are not ordinary webpages that an extension can capture. Check the extension’s stated compatibility, the browser’s permission prompt, and any error message. Update the extension and browser if the listing identifies a relevant compatibility fix; GoFullPage’s September 2026 listing, for example, mentions changes for Chromium 153’s new URL requirement. If a browser dialog is the target, capture it with the operating system’s screenshot function instead.

The file is the wrong format or contains information you meant to hide

Choose the export format before saving if the extension offers a format selector, or inspect its export menu after capture. Reopen the saved file to verify it. If you used blur, pixelation, or redaction, zoom in and ensure the original text cannot be read; if you are unsure, do not share the image.

When an API is a better fit: ScreenshotNeo

If your goal is an automated screenshot rather than a one-off browser capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-capture steps accept the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its plans all include every feature.

Or skip the browser setup

Use cURL to save a screenshot; replace the example target URL with the page you are allowed to capture. Create an API key first, and keep it private.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

For a script, the same request can be made in Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Or in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response handling. In plain terms, ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Other plan allowances are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Cost and workflow trade-offs

A free extension is usually the straightforward choice for a person capturing a page manually. “Free” should be read product by product: Full Page Screen Capture’s listing says all its described features are free, while FireShot advertises an upgrade and OpenCapture charges for optional tiled watermark credits. ScreenshotNeo is a paid API beyond its free allowance rather than a free extension: its published plans range from $5 for 3,000 shots to $249 for 1,000,000, with two months free on yearly billing. Choose based on workflow, not just the headline price—manual browser use, editing, and automated repeat capture are different jobs.

For reliability, keep a copy of the original capture, inspect long-page results before relying on them, and make one test capture with a non-sensitive page when evaluating a new extension. If you automate captures, read the API response and its verdict/billing headers rather than treating every returned result as a successful page image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a free extension save an entire webpage as a PDF?

Yes, some of the listed products advertise PDF export, including Full Page Screen Capture, FireShot, OpenCapture, and Full Page Capture. Confirm the current export options in the listing or extension before installing.

Will a full-page screenshot include everything that loads later?

Not necessarily. Content that appears only after scrolling, scripts, or interaction may be missed or stitched imperfectly; inspect the result before using it.

Do I need a screenshot extension to capture a webpage?

No. A browser’s built-in capture feature or your operating system’s screenshot tool may be enough for a visible-area capture. An extension is more useful when you need full-page capture or built-in editing.
