For a one-off full-page screenshot, use the browser’s built-in developer tools: in Chrome, open the Command Menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot; in Firefox, run :screenshot --fullpage in the Web Console. For scripted captures, connect to the browser through a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) client and call Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport. Ordinary JavaScript typed into a page’s console cannot call that privileged protocol method directly.
What “from the browser console” can mean
There are two different jobs that often get called a console screenshot. A manual capture uses commands built into browser developer tools. An automated capture uses a separate connection to the browser’s developer-tools protocol. The page’s own JavaScript console is not that protocol connection: it runs code in the page context and does not grant access to privileged DevTools commands.
- One-off capture: use Chrome DevTools’ Command Menu or Firefox’s Web Console helper.
- Repeatable automation: use CDP through a client or browser automation library, then save the returned image data.
Chrome: capture the whole page with DevTools
- Open the page you want to capture in Chrome.
- Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+J on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Option+J on macOS, or use Chrome’s menu to open Developer tools.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type
screenshot, then choose Capture a full size screenshot. - Allow Chrome to save the image through its normal download workflow.
Chrome for Developers describes the command as capturing “the whole page including the content that isn’t visible in the viewport.” The output is an image of the webpage, not a picture of the surrounding browser interface. Command names and shortcuts can vary by Chrome version, so use the Command Menu search if a label has moved.
Full-size versus area capture
Choose Capture a full size screenshot for the document’s full vertical content. It is different from an area capture, which targets a selected region. Chrome documents that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked; if the area option is unavailable, dock DevTools and try again. For a whole-page capture, use the full-size command rather than selecting a viewport region.

Firefox: run the Web Console screenshot helper
Open Firefox’s Web Console, enter the command below, and press Enter:
:screenshot --fullpage
Mozilla documents :screenshot as a Web Console command for creating a screenshot of the current page. The --fullpage option includes content outside the current window bounds. It is a Firefox developer-tools helper, not JavaScript that can be pasted into an arbitrary webpage console.

:screenshot --fullpage --filename article.png
| Option | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
--filename |
Sets the output filename. | --filename page.png |
--dpr |
Sets the device-pixel ratio for the screenshot. | --dpr 2 |
--delay |
Waits before capturing, useful when a page state needs time to appear. | --delay 2 |
--clipboard |
Sends the screenshot to the clipboard. | --clipboard |
--file |
Forces file output. | --file |
--selector |
Targets an element selected by CSS selector rather than the full page. | --selector ".article" |
For a full-page capture of a particular article element, combine the relevant options, for example :screenshot --fullpage --selector ".article" --filename article.png. Use a selector that actually matches an element on the loaded page. Mozilla warns that another capture saved with the same filename overwrites the existing file, so use distinct names when keeping multiple versions.
Automate a full-page screenshot with CDP
Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) exposes a screenshot method for software connected to the browser. The relevant request is Page.captureScreenshot; setting captureBeyondViewport includes content beyond the visible viewport. CDP supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and returns image data encoded as base64.
{
"method": "Page.captureScreenshot",
"params": {
"format": "png",
"captureBeyondViewport": true
}
}
This is a protocol-shaped request, not a command to paste into a normal webpage console. A CDP client must attach to the browser or page, send the request over the protocol transport, and decode the returned base64 data before writing the image file. The exact connection and file-writing code depends on the automation client you use.

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Choose the right capture format
- PNG: a lossless choice for text, diagrams, and crisp interface details.
- JPEG: useful when a smaller lossy image is acceptable.
- WebP: another supported image format; verify that the downstream application accepts it.
For high-density output in an automated workflow, configure device emulation or device scale in the CDP client before capture. The protocol request above does not itself specify a device-pixel ratio.
Which method fits your task?
| Need | Best fit | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Quick manual full-page image in Chrome | Command Menu → screenshot → Capture a full size screenshot | No script or protocol client required. |
| Quick manual full-page image in Firefox | :screenshot --fullpage |
Add options such as filename, delay, DPR, or selector as needed. |
| Repeated captures in a script | CDP client calling Page.captureScreenshot |
Connection, attachment, and base64 decoding are client-specific. |
| Capture a single page element | Firefox --selector, Chrome’s relevant DevTools capture command, or CDP clipping/element geometry |
Confirm the element exists and is rendered before capture. |
Prepare the page so the screenshot is complete
Full-page capture does not guarantee that every site has finished rendering every component. Pages may load images only as they approach the viewport, fix navigation bars while scrolling, animate elements, or insert content after an API response. These behaviors can affect the result even when the browser command succeeds.

- Wait for content: allow the page and its images to load before capturing. For a delayed menu or state, use Firefox’s
--delayoption or script the wait in your automation client. - Trigger lazy content: if lower-page images are absent, scroll through the page first and wait for them to appear, then capture again.
- Set the intended state: open the menu, expand the section, or establish the hover state before taking the screenshot.
- Inspect fixed and sticky elements: a bar fixed to the viewport can appear in ways that differ from a normal-flow element in a tall capture. Check the output at top, middle, and bottom.
- Mind document size: exceptionally tall pages create large images and may take longer to render or save. If a whole-page image is unwieldy, capture a specific element or divide the page into sections.
Troubleshooting
Chrome does not show the full-size screenshot command
Open DevTools first, then reopen the Command Menu and search for screenshot. Confirm you are selecting Capture a full size screenshot, not a viewport or area capture. Browser UI labels are version-sensitive; the menu search is more reliable than relying on a remembered menu location.

Chrome area capture is unavailable
Dock DevTools and retry. Chrome’s documentation notes that area capture is unavailable while DevTools is undocked. This limitation concerns area capture; use the full-size screenshot command when the aim is the complete page.
Firefox output misses content or looks too early
Confirm the content has loaded, then retry with a delay such as :screenshot --fullpage --delay 2. If only one item is missing, target it with --selector to distinguish a page-loading issue from a full-page layout issue. The delay value is a wait duration in seconds as used in Mozilla’s example.
The Firefox file replaced an earlier capture
Use a new value for --filename. Mozilla warns that saving to the same filename overwrites the earlier screenshot.

A CDP JSON request does nothing in the page console
That JSON describes a protocol method; it is not executable page JavaScript and cannot be sent to CDP by pasting it into the page console. Run it through a CDP connection or a browser automation client that can attach to the browser and send protocol commands.
The full image is huge or inconvenient
Try capturing a selector or smaller section instead of the entire document. If you need a particular output type, select a supported CDP format or use a Firefox filename extension appropriate to the intended image. Confirm the saved file opens correctly in the software that will consume it.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable captures without wiring up browser tools, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one API request and returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options and response details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, then sign up free.

Can I use JavaScript in a page to take a full-page screenshot?
Ordinary page JavaScript does not have direct access to privileged DevTools Protocol methods. Use browser developer tools for a manual capture or a CDP client for automation.
Does a full-page screenshot include the browser tabs and address bar?
No. These capture methods produce an image of the page, not the surrounding browser interface.
