For a text-focused printout, open the page in a browser’s simplified or reading view, turn images off when that option exists, and check Print Preview before printing. Firefox offers a documented Simplified format; Chrome can hide images inside Reading mode; Edge can suppress background graphics, but that does not remove ordinary pictures embedded in the page.
Choose the method your browser supports

Firefox: print with Simplified format
Firefox has the clearest built-in route for a cleaner, mostly text-only printout. Mozilla documents the process in its Firefox printing help and the separate guide to simplified, clutter-free pages.
- Open the webpage you want to print.
- Open the menu button and select Print.
- Expand More settings in the print panel.
- Under Format, choose Simplified, if it is listed.
- Inspect the preview. Confirm that the article text, headings, tables and any information you need are still present.
- Print the pages or save the preview as a PDF.
Mozilla says Simplified format strips clutter, including buttons, ads and background images. Pages can still set themselves up differently for paper than for a screen, so the preview is the final authority. Firefox’s other print controls include paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, two-sided printing, headers and footers, and print backgrounds.
If Simplified is missing in Firefox
Mozilla says the page may not provide a simplified version, or Reader View may already be active. If the Reader View icon is available in the address bar, open it before printing and then inspect the result. Availability and retained content vary by page.

Chrome: turn images off in Reading mode
Chrome’s Reading mode can present compatible articles with images hidden. Google’s instructions are in Use reading mode in Chrome. The image setting applies only to the Reading mode text, not to a normal tab showing the original webpage.
- Open the article in Chrome.
- Open Reading mode using the browser’s Reading mode control.
- In the Reading mode settings, switch Images off.
- Check that the text you need remains readable and that headings, lists or tables have not been lost.
- Open Chrome’s print dialog from that view. On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+P; on Mac, press Command+P.
- Choose the printer or Save to PDF, set the page range and other print settings, review the preview, and print or save.
This combined workflow follows Google’s separate Reading mode and printing instructions; Google does not promise that every Reading mode view will print identically to the screen. Reading mode may not work as expected with image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages or login screens.
Edge: remove backgrounds, then verify inline images
In Microsoft Edge, open the print dialog and expand More settings. Leave Background graphics unchecked. Microsoft explains this setting in Print in Microsoft Edge: enabling it includes page backgrounds, while leaving it unchecked ignores them.

- Open the page in Edge.
- Select the browser menu and choose Print.
- Expand More settings.
- Make sure Background graphics is unchecked.
- If your version shows a clutter-free print option, try it when you want surrounding material such as ads and site navigation reduced.
- Use the preview to determine whether ordinary pictures inside the article are still present, then print or save the result.
Do not confuse a background setting with an all-image setting. A photograph placed in the article body, an image inside a card, or a logo loaded as ordinary content may remain. Microsoft describes clutter-free printing as a feature being released through the print dialog, so its presence can depend on your Edge version or rollout.

Why “background graphics” is not the same as “all images”
Webpages use images in several ways. A background can be a CSS decoration behind text; an inline image can be an article photograph; a logo or advertisement can be a separate content element. Edge’s checkbox addresses the first category. Firefox Simplified attempts broader clutter reduction, while Chrome’s Images toggle applies to the Reading mode representation. None of the documented controls is a universal switch that removes every image from every website.
That is why a preview matters more than the label on the setting. Look for these common problems before committing paper:

- An image was essential to a chart, map, diagram or step and disappeared with the text around it.
- A page retained inline pictures even though its background color vanished.
- Navigation, cookie controls or advertisements occupy pages in the normal print layout.
- A reading or simplified view omitted interactive content, forms or a login-dependent section.
- Headings, table columns or list indentation changed between the screen and the print preview.
A dependable print-without-images workflow
- Start with the least destructive supported view. Use Firefox Simplified or Chrome Reading mode for an article. Use Edge’s background setting when you only need to remove decorative backgrounds.
- Read the preview, not just the webpage. Scroll through every page of the preview and check that the title, body text, links, tables and required figures are still there.
- Adjust paper settings only after the content is right. Set paper size, scale, margins, pages per sheet and two-sided printing according to your printer and readability needs.
- Choose a page range. If the unwanted material is confined to certain pages, print only the pages containing the text you need.
- Save a PDF when you need a reusable copy. The browser’s print preview can save the cleaned presentation as a PDF; open that file once to verify it before sharing or archiving.
When the result is not truly image-free
The preview still contains photographs
That is expected when you use Edge’s Background graphics control: it targets backgrounds, not inline content. In Firefox, confirm that Simplified was actually selected. In Chrome, confirm that you are printing the Reading mode view rather than the original webpage.
The text is missing or badly rearranged
Switch back to the normal page and compare the preview. Simplified and Reading modes are conditional presentations; they can omit or reorganize elements on pages they do not fully support. For Chrome, pages built around galleries, maps, forms, quizzes, payment steps or sign-in screens are specifically listed as compatibility cases.

Use the ordinary print dialog and rely on the preview to decide whether the page is acceptable. Firefox’s Simplified format is only offered when the page supports it, and Chrome Reading mode is not compatible with every website or format. There is no documented cross-browser command that guarantees removal of every image.

The printout looks different from the screen
This is normal enough that Mozilla warns pages can configure themselves to look different on paper. Recheck scale, margins, paper size and headers or footers, then inspect the final preview again.

Can I remove only some pictures while keeping others?
The documented browser controls are view-level controls: they simplify a page, hide Reading mode images or suppress backgrounds. They do not provide a per-image selection list, so use the preview to decide whether the resulting text still contains the visuals you need.
