Test YouTube’s thumbnail URL pattern, then search both the original watch-page URL and the image URL in the Wayback Machine. If those fail, use an archive index such as Archivarix Tube Search and run a reverse-image search on any thumbnail you recover. A thumbnail, an archived page and a playable video are separate outcomes: finding one does not prove that the others still exist.
What you need before searching
Keep the complete YouTube URL as well as the ID. The ID is normally the 11-character string after v= in a watch URL or after youtu.be/ in a shortened URL.
- Watch URL: for example,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID. - Video ID: replace
VIDEO_IDbelow with the actual 11-character value. - Any context: an old title, channel name, playlist entry, message, bookmark, browser-history item or embedded player can confirm that you have the right video.
Do not remove the original URL after extracting the ID. Archive services may accept either form, and the watch URL can reveal captures that an ID-only search misses.
Step 1: Recover and verify the video ID
- Check the address bar, browser history, bookmarks, old messages and playlist entries.
- For an embedded player, inspect the embed URL or the page source for the
video_idorvvalue. - Preserve capitalization exactly. A one-character error points to a different video.
- Write down the title, channel and approximate upload date if you know them. These details help distinguish a real match from an unrelated archive result.
If you have only a title and no URL or ID, search the title and channel first. A unique ID is much more reliable than a common title.

Step 2: Test YouTube’s thumbnail URLs
Try the familiar image endpoint directly in a browser, replacing VIDEO_ID with the recovered ID:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpgIf that does not return a useful image, try these common alternatives:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/hqdefault.jpg
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/default.jpgThe i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/RESOLUTION.jpg pattern and these resolution names are documented by a third-party guide, not by an official YouTube specification. Treat them as checks rather than guarantees. A deleted video may still have an image endpoint that resolves, an endpoint that returns a lower-resolution image, or no usable image at all. Check each resolution separately.
How to tell a real thumbnail from a failure
- Open the image itself, not only a page that embeds it.
- Save the file and record its URL and the date you obtained it.
- Compare visible branding, faces, text and subject matter with the title or channel information you have.
- Do not call the video recovered merely because an image loads. This step recovers an image lead, not the video stream.
Step 3: Search the Wayback Machine for the watch page
Enter the complete YouTube watch URL in the Wayback Machine. Look through captures around the period when the video was available. A saved page may preserve the title, channel, description or an embedded image even when the live page now says it is unavailable.

Inspect the captured page itself. A page capture does not automatically include every image, script or media file referenced by that page. If the watch URL has no capture before deletion, there may be no page content at that address to recover.
Step 4: Search the thumbnail URL separately
Run a second Wayback search for each candidate image URL, such as the maxresdefault.jpg and hqdefault.jpg addresses. The Internet Archive explains that an image or link URL can be entered directly to check whether it was captured.
This separate search matters because page and image captures are independent. A saved watch page does not establish that its thumbnail was saved, and an archived image does not prove that the watch page or video file was captured. Open the image capture and download it if it is present.
Step 5: Use an archive index by ID
Search the ID or full URL in an archive index such as Archivarix Tube Search. Its service description says it searches multiple archives and can expose available metadata, thumbnails, subtitles and possible video-file records. Treat each result as a lead: open the stated source and verify what is actually retrievable.

Xarchive’s YouTube archive service likewise distinguishes saved-page traces from possible playable copies and notes that availability depends on what public archives saved. Coverage changes, so a negative result from one index is not proof that no copy exists anywhere.
Interpret archive results carefully

Step 6: Run a reverse-image search
Once you have a thumbnail file, submit it to a reverse-image search service. Search results can reveal a reupload, a forum post, a news article or another page that copied the image. Archivarix’s deleted-video guide describes reverse-image search as a lead-finding step.
Verify every apparent match with at least two independent clues: the video ID, title, channel, distinctive text in the image, upload date or surrounding page context. A visually similar image is not proof that it came from the deleted video.
What each method can and cannot recover

How to document a successful recovery
- Save the image without editing the original file.
- Record the exact source URL, archive name and capture date.
- Keep the original watch URL and ID beside the file.
- Label the result precisely: “thumbnail recovered,” “metadata recovered” or “video playable.”
- If you publish the image, check copyright, privacy and platform rules. Finding an archived copy does not grant reuse rights.
Troubleshooting common failures
The thumbnail URL returns an error or placeholder
Check the ID for transcription mistakes and try maxresdefault.jpg, hqdefault.jpg and default.jpg individually. If all fail, search the image URLs in the Wayback Machine and an archive index.

The Wayback Machine shows the page but no image
Search the image URL separately. The page and image may have been captured at different times, or the page may reference an asset that was never archived.
An archive index shows metadata but no download
Metadata is not a media file. Follow the source link, test any reported thumbnail directly and record the result as metadata-only unless an image opens or downloads.
A reverse-image search finds many similar images
Use the ID, title, channel and date to eliminate unrelated matches. Cropped or recompressed copies can still be useful, but preserve the discovered page as evidence.
The archive says a video exists but playback fails
Try the archive’s original source and any alternate capture listed. Report it as a possible media record, not a playable recovery, until playback succeeds.
