Ubuntu’s Print, Alt+Print, and Shift+Print shortcuts capture the desktop, a window, and the whole screen—not content that continues below the browser viewport.
First decide what “website screenshot” means
There are two different captures that are often confused:
- Visible-screen capture: an image of what is currently visible on the desktop or in the browser window.
- Full-page capture: one image containing the entire document, including content below the fold.
Use a browser’s full-page command when you need a webpage for documentation, a bug report, a design review, or an archive. Use Ubuntu’s screenshot tool when you need the desktop, a window, or a selected region.
Capture a complete webpage in Firefox
Firefox has the most direct built-in workflow for a long webpage. The Mozilla Support instructions describe these labels, although the support page is localized and shows a 2015 update date; exact wording can vary with your installed Firefox version.

- Open the page in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- In the screenshot toolbar, select Save full page. This captures content beyond the visible viewport. Choose Save visible when you only want the current browser view.
- Save the image, then open it and check the bottom of the page. Very long pages and pages that load content only after scrolling deserve a visual check.
When Firefox does not show “Save full page”
Make sure the context menu was opened inside the page rather than on a browser tab, toolbar, or embedded plug-in. Try the keyboard shortcut from the page itself. If the labels still differ, update Firefox or consult the help for that specific release; browser UI and shortcut behavior can change.
Dynamic and lazy-loaded content
A page may insert images, comments, or product cards only after scrolling or after a delay. Scroll through the page once before capturing, wait for visible loading indicators to finish, and repeat the capture if the result contains empty regions. A browser screenshot reflects the page state at capture time; it does not automatically prove that every deferred request completed.
Use Chrome or Chromium DevTools for a full-size image
A Chrome Community answer documents this route, but it is a community post rather than current product documentation, so command names may change:
- Open the webpage in Chrome or Chromium.
- Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I (or the browser’s developer-tools menu).
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the DevTools command menu.
- Type Capture full size screenshot and select that command.
- Wait for the downloaded image, then inspect its top and bottom edges.
If the command is missing, click inside DevTools before pressing the shortcut, or search the command menu for “screenshot.” A browser update can rename or remove a command, so Firefox’s documented workflow may be easier when you need a repeatable manual process.
Capture the Ubuntu desktop, a window, or a region
Ubuntu Help lists these standard shortcuts:
| Shortcut | Result | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Launches the screenshot tool | Choosing a capture mode interactively | |
| Alt+Print | Captures a window | A browser window, terminal, or dialog |
| Shift+Print | Captures the whole screen | Everything currently visible on the display |
Ubuntu Help documents the default destination as Pictures/Screenshots inside your home folder. Files begin with “Screenshot” and include the capture date and time. Release and desktop-shell changes can alter the destination, so check the screenshot notification or the current Screenshot settings if the folder is empty.
These shortcuts do not stitch a long webpage. If the page extends below the browser window, use Firefox or Chrome’s full-page feature instead.

Use gnome-screenshot from the command line
The Jammy gnome-screenshot manual (package version 41.0-2 for that release) documents screen, active-window, user-defined-area, clipboard, and delayed captures. The following commands are useful when you want a repeatable local workflow:
gnome-screenshot
gnome-screenshot --window
gnome-screenshot --area
gnome-screenshot --clipboard
gnome-screenshot --delay 5
gnome-screenshotcaptures the screen.--windowcaptures the active window.--arealets you draw a region.--clipboardplaces the result on the clipboard instead of relying on a file.--delay 5waits five seconds, useful when you must open a menu or move the pointer before capture.
Option names and behavior are tied to the installed package. Check gnome-screenshot --help on your Ubuntu release before putting a command into a script, especially on a Wayland session or a non-GNOME desktop.

Flameshot is an optional utility documented in Ubuntu’s Questing package manual (version 12.1.0+ds-2 for that release). Its GUI lets you select a region and annotate it, and it also supports full-screen and monitor-specific modes. The upstream key-binding guide describes assigning the GUI command to a GNOME keyboard shortcut.
Flameshot is a good fit for marking an error, circling a control, or adding an arrow before sending an image to a colleague. It is not a replacement for a browser’s full-page capture when the target extends below the viewport. Package versions, desktop environments, and Wayland behavior are not uniform across Ubuntu releases, so test the shortcut and clipboard behavior on the machine where you will use it.
Choose the method by capture scope
| Method | Scope | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo (#1 API choice) | Full webpage, element, image, or PDF through an API | Automated or repeatable captures without maintaining a browser | Remote capture requires sending the URL and any supplied authentication data to the service |
| Firefox Take Screenshot | Visible view or complete webpage | One-off full-page captures in a browser | Menus and behavior can vary by Firefox version |
| Chrome/Chromium DevTools | Visible or full-size webpage | Chromium-based testing workflows | The documented full-size command comes from a community answer and may change |
| Ubuntu Screenshot shortcuts | Whole screen, window, or interactive mode | Fast desktop captures | Does not capture content below the viewport |
| gnome-screenshot | Screen, window, area, clipboard, delayed capture | Shell scripts and local workflows | Release and session differences matter |
| Flameshot | Selected region, full screen, monitor | Annotated support screenshots | Requires an optional application and setup |
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so an Ubuntu machine can capture a page without launching Firefox or Chromium. The API accepts full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/orientation/page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease migration.
Before capture, its cleaning steps can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status} ${res.statusText}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
Agent and batch workflows
The MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. That lets an AI agent inspect a page, capture it, or produce a PDF without you wiring browser automation. For scheduled jobs, use asynchronous captures and signed webhooks; for a list of pages, send up to 100 URLs in one bulk call.

Performance, reliability, and privacy checks
Make long pages predictable
- Choose a fixed viewport or device preset when comparing revisions.
- Wait for a known selector, a short delay, or network idle instead of guessing that the page is ready.
- Enable full-page mode when the target includes below-the-fold content, and check that lazy images are present.
- Use a CSS selector capture for a single chart, card, or invoice rather than downloading an entire page.
Handle authentication carefully
For a local browser capture, log in normally and keep the image on the Ubuntu machine. For an API capture, pass only the cookies, headers, or Authorization data required by the target and avoid putting secrets in shell history or a public URL. ScreenshotNeo supports custom headers, cookies, user agents, and Authorization; review your organization’s data policy before sending private pages to any remote service.
Control repeat captures
Caching with a TTL you choose can prevent unnecessary recaptures. For a fresh image, shorten or disable the cache according to the API documentation. Resize output or choose WebP when transfer size matters; use PNG when pixel-level comparison or transparency is important. A PDF is preferable when the deliverable is meant to print or preserve page ranges rather than compare pixels.

The image contains only the visible viewport
You selected Save visible or used a desktop shortcut. Repeat the capture with Firefox’s Save full page or Chrome’s full-size command.

Lower sections are blank
The site may lazy-load content. Scroll once in the browser, wait for network activity to settle, and capture again. For automation, wait for a selector or network idle and enable full-page capture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA cookie banner or chat bubble covers the page
Dismiss it before a local browser capture. With ScreenshotNeo, the consent, newsletter, and chat-cleaning steps run before capture and can be individually switched off when you need the unmodified page.
Print does nothing or captures the wrong display
Check whether your keyboard labels the key “Print Screen” or “PrtSc.” Use Alt+Print for a window and Shift+Print for the whole screen, then verify the desktop’s screenshot settings and session type.
The file is not in Pictures/Screenshots
Look at the screenshot notification for the actual path. The documented location applies to Ubuntu’s standard workflow, but shell, desktop-environment, and release settings can redirect files.
Chrome’s full-size command is unavailable
Open DevTools first, focus it, and search its command menu. If the command still is not present, use Firefox’s full-page tool or a controlled API capture instead of relying on a stale menu label.

An API response is blank or not billed
Read X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed. A bot check, CAPTCHA, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit is intentionally identified and is not billed. Correct the target URL, authentication, wait condition, or blocking rules, then retry.

Frequently asked questions
Can a full-page screenshot include content that appears only after a user clicks?
Not automatically. Trigger the interaction first in the browser, or configure a pre-capture click and a wait condition in an automated capture so the state exists before rendering.
Is a screenshot suitable evidence that a page is accessible to every visitor?
No. It records one browser, viewport, session, and moment. Test responsive layouts, keyboard access, and different browsers separately; a visually complete image cannot establish universal compatibility.
Why might two full-page screenshots of the same URL differ?
Ads, rotating content, fonts, personalization, animations, viewport dimensions, and network timing can change the rendered document. Stabilize those variables with a fixed viewport, waits, blocked resources where appropriate, and a consistent browser or API configuration.
