The upload steps depend on the editor. In Canva, custom fonts are added to a Brand Kit and then selected in the design. In Adobe Express, you can upload from a text object’s font picker or add the file to a Brand or Library. Before either upload, confirm that your font license allows uploading or embedding and that your account plan includes custom fonts.

First, identify your editor, plan and font file

“Image template” is not a single file format or service. Canva and Adobe Express use different controls, supported formats and account permissions, so do not follow one product’s menu path in the other.

  • Have the actual font file: locate the OTF, TTF or WOFF file supplied by the font creator. A font installed on your computer is not necessarily uploaded to a web editor; you may need to find the original file first.
  • Check rights: read the font license for web use, embedding and team use. Canva and Adobe both place responsibility for proper licensing on the person uploading the file. Adobe says an upload without proper rights can be removed or replaced, which can change the design’s appearance.
  • Check the plan: Canva lists Pro, Teams, Business, Education and Nonprofits as plans with font-upload access. Adobe Express lists Premium, Teams and Enterprise. An administrator can restrict the feature in an Enterprise account.
  • Keep a backup: retain the original licensed file and record its family name, weight and license terms. This makes it easier to restore a template if a team changes accounts or removes a font.

Upload a custom font to Canva

Canva’s documented workflow is organized around a Brand Kit. Add the font to the appropriate kit first, then choose it from the editor’s font controls.

1. Verify Canva’s requirements

Canva lists OTF, TTF and WOFF as supported custom-font formats. A Brand Kit can contain up to 500 uploaded fonts. Font upload is available on Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Education and Nonprofits plans. If your file uses another format, obtain an authorized OTF, TTF or WOFF version rather than renaming the extension.

2. Add the file to a Brand Kit

  1. From Canva’s home side panel, open Brand.
  2. Select an existing Brand Kit, or create one.
  3. In the kit’s brand-font area, choose the option to add or upload a font.
  4. Select the licensed OTF, TTF or WOFF file on your device and confirm any rights notice.
  5. Wait for the upload to finish before closing the page. If Canva reports a format, size or permission error, resolve that error rather than trying to use a partially uploaded file.

The exact labels can vary with Canva’s account type and interface updates, but the essential route is Brand → Brand Kit → upload font. The font belongs to that kit; uploading it to one kit does not automatically add it to every kit in the organization.

3. Apply it in a template

  1. Open the image template in the Canva editor.
  2. Click an existing text object or add a text object.
  3. Open the font control in the text toolbar.
  4. Search for the uploaded family name and select it. Apply the correct weight or style if the family contains multiple files.
  5. Review line breaks, spacing and text-box dimensions. A new font can change wrapping even when the text and font size stay the same.

4. Make it available to teammates

Canva says team members can use Brand Kit assets in the editor, but access depends on the workspace type, kit sharing and role settings. If a colleague cannot find the font, check that the person has access to the relevant Brand Kit and that the administrator permits use of its assets. A design shared with someone who lacks the kit or font permission may show a substitute instead.

Canva also states that fonts themselves cannot be copied along with designs or files between accounts or teams. When moving a template, the receiving account or team may need to upload its own authorized copy.

Upload a custom font to Adobe Express

Adobe Express provides two routes: upload while editing a design, or add the font to a Brand or Library for reuse. Adobe’s current guidance lists OTF and TTF files under 512 MB, with custom-font upload on Premium, Teams and Enterprise plans.

Method A: upload from a design’s text panel

  1. Open the design in Adobe Express and select a text object.
  2. In the Text panel, open the font dropdown.
  3. Choose Upload, then choose Add fonts.
  4. Select the OTF or TTF file on your device and complete the rights confirmation.
  5. With the text object still selected, open the font list and choose the file under Uploaded fonts.

If the upload succeeds but the text still uses a substitute, select the text object again and explicitly choose the family under Uploaded fonts. Uploading a file does not necessarily change every existing text layer automatically.

Method B: add the font to a Brand or Library

  1. Open Brands or a Library and select the Brand where the font should live.
  2. Choose the add icon, then Upload.
  3. Choose Add fonts and select one OTF or TTF file.
  4. Return to the design’s font menu and select the family from the uploaded-font list.

Adobe’s Brand workflow requires fonts to be added individually. Bulk font uploads are not supported, and a duplicate cannot be uploaded if that font is already in the library. For Enterprise accounts, an administrator may disable the Upload control or manage fonts centrally through the Admin Console. If you do not see Upload, ask the account administrator whether uploads are allowed or whether the font must be published for the organization.

Canva or Adobe Express: which upload route fits?

Question Canva Adobe Express
Where you start Brand area and a Brand Kit Text font picker, Brand or Library
Listed file types OTF, TTF and WOFF OTF and TTF
Plans named in the guidance Pro, Teams, Business, Education and Nonprofits Premium, Teams and Enterprise
Published limit Up to 500 uploaded fonts per Brand Kit Each file must be under 512 MB
Team administration Brand Kit sharing, team type and roles affect access Enterprise administrators can disable uploads or manage fonts centrally
Bulk upload Not stated in the cited guidance Not supported in the Brand workflow; add fonts individually

Choose Canva when your organization already governs typography through Brand Kits. Choose Adobe Express when you need a quick upload from the current text panel or when your team manages fonts through Adobe Brands and Libraries. The file-format difference matters: a WOFF file listed by Canva is not listed as an accepted upload format in Adobe Express, so obtain an OTF or TTF version for Adobe.

Troubleshoot a missing, rejected or substituted font

There is no Upload button

  • Confirm the account plan. Canva limits uploads to the plans listed above; Adobe Express limits direct upload to Premium, Teams and Enterprise.
  • In Adobe Enterprise, ask an administrator whether uploads are disabled or whether fonts must be published centrally.
  • In Canva, open the Brand area rather than looking only in the design toolbar; the upload is a Brand Kit action.

The file is rejected

  • Check the extension and obtain a genuine OTF, TTF or WOFF file supported by that editor. Renaming a file does not convert it.
  • For Adobe Express, verify that the file is below the documented 512 MB limit.
  • Confirm that your license permits the intended upload or embedding. Do not bypass a rights warning.

The font uploaded but text still looks different

  1. Wait for the upload to complete, then reopen the font menu.
  2. Select the specific text layer and choose the uploaded family, rather than relying on a global style that may still point to another font.
  3. Check the weight and style. A regular file selected instead of a bold or italic file can look like a substitute.
  4. Inspect line wrapping, letter spacing and text-box height; these often change when metrics differ.

A collaborator sees a substitute

In Canva, verify Brand Kit sharing and the collaborator’s workspace role. In Adobe Express, confirm that the person belongs to the relevant Brand or Library and, for Enterprise, that the administrator has published or permitted the font. A shared design does not by itself guarantee access to a private font asset.

The font disappeared later

Re-check the license and organization policy. Adobe warns that an improperly licensed upload may be removed or replaced. In Canva, verify that the Brand Kit still exists and that the account has not changed teams. If a design moved to another Canva account or team, upload an authorized copy there; Canva says the font itself does not travel with the file.

If your goal is to capture a template or published page after you have applied the font, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. This one-call example captures a page as a WebP file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo includes full-page captures with lazy images loaded, element selection, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration.

Practical checks before publishing a template

  • Open the design in the target account or team, not only in the account that uploaded the font.
  • Check every text style, weight, language character and line break at the intended export size.
  • Keep the license record with the project and remove files that the license does not permit you to share.
  • For automated screenshots, wait for the font and images to load before capture; otherwise a fallback font can be rendered into the output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload a font that is only installed on my computer?

You need the font file itself. An operating-system installation does not automatically make the font available inside Canva or Adobe Express; locate the licensed OTF, TTF or WOFF file and upload a format accepted by your editor.

Does uploading a font change every template in my account?

No. Canva makes the font available through the Brand Kit where it was uploaded, while Adobe Express makes it available through the relevant uploaded-font, Brand or Library area. Existing text objects may still need the font selected explicitly.

Why can a font look correct in the editor but change in an exported image?

A different weight, missing character or fallback font may have been used for part of the text. Recheck the selected uploaded family and weight, then inspect the exported file at its final dimensions.
