The free allowances confirmed on provider pricing pages checked in 2026 are 50 images per month from HTML/CSS to Image and up to 100 screenshots per month from ScreenshotOne. ScreenshotNeo is another option to consider first when you need website screenshots: it removes common consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.
What a free HTML-to-image API does
A hosted rendering API takes content—usually HTML/CSS, a public webpage URL, or both in a provider-specific workflow—and renders it into a file. Depending on the service, the result may be PNG, JPEG/JPG, WebP, or PDF. Your application makes an HTTP request; the provider runs the browser or renderer and returns the output or a link to it.
This is useful for generating social cards, invoices, product previews, charts, reports, or webpage snapshots without installing and operating a browser-rendering stack yourself. “Free” generally means a monthly allowance or free tier with limits, not unlimited use. The quotas below are provider-advertised figures, not independent tests of rendering quality, speed, or reliability.
Free API options and their stated allowances
These figures reflect provider pricing pages checked in 2026 and may change. Confirm the current plan details before you build around a quota or rely on a feature.
| Service | Stated free allowance | Documented input and output | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | 1,000 screenshots per month, no card required | Website URL to PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; also HTML/CSS to image | Only clean shots are billed; the product states that bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Every feature is on every plan. |
| HTML/CSS to Image | 50 images per month | HTML/CSS, public webpage URL, reusable templates, or Open Graph image workflows; PNG, JPG, WebP, or PDF are documented | The free plan includes HTML/CSS and URL screenshots. Its pricing page lists limitations for templates and media upload; check that page for current inclusions. |
| ScreenshotOne | Up to 100 screenshots per month | Its pricing page lists HTML and PDF rendering and multiple image formats, including PNG, WebP, and JPEG | Do not assume a paid-plan feature is available on the free tier; verify the current feature-by-feature plan details. |
For ScreenshotNeo, the free allowance and paid tiers are currently listed as follows: Starter is $5 for 3,000 shots, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. These are product prices, not a claim that the alternatives have equivalent feature sets or billing rules.

How to choose a free HTML-to-image API
1. Match the input to the job
If you already have markup, look for a service that accepts HTML and optional CSS directly. HTML/CSS to Image documents an html input or a url input, but not both in the same request, with CSS available as an option. If you need a current page snapshot, confirm that the API accepts a public URL and whether it waits for JavaScript-rendered content. A URL screenshot workflow and an HTML rendering workflow are related but not interchangeable: one renders a site as loaded, while the other renders markup you supply.
2. Check the output and the actual free-tier terms
Choose the format your downstream system needs. PNG is often useful when crisp edges or transparency matter; JPEG is commonly used for photographic content; WebP can reduce image size where supported; PDF is appropriate for document-like output. These are format considerations, not promises about each provider’s visual fidelity. Confirm that the desired format, full-page capture, templates, storage, caching, or media upload is included on the free tier rather than merely supported by the product in general.
3. Estimate whether the quota covers your usage
Estimate monthly renders rather than choosing by the largest headline number alone. A workflow that renders a few previews on demand may fit within 50 images; a recurring job that snapshots many URLs can consume 100 screenshots quickly. Treat the quotas as provider-stated monthly limits, and check how the provider counts failed requests, retries, cached responses, or different output variants. Those counting rules are not established here for HTML/CSS to Image or ScreenshotOne.

HTML/CSS to Image documents HTTP Basic authentication: use the API ID as the username and API key as the password. Its signed-URL documentation says signing should happen on your server and the secret API key should not be exposed in client-side code. The general rule is the same for any secret token: keep it in server-side configuration or a secret manager, not in browser JavaScript, a public repository, or a URL that can be copied by visitors.

Make a request without leaking a secret
For HTML/CSS to Image, the documented integration uses an HTTP request authenticated with HTTP Basic credentials. The precise endpoint and request details should be taken from its current API documentation; do not substitute an assumed endpoint. Keep the credential-bearing call on your server, validate user-supplied URLs or markup, and return only the rendered result your application intends to expose.
For a webpage screenshot using ScreenshotNeo, the documented GET endpoint accepts a URL and an access key. The example below saves the returned image; change the target URL or output filename as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response details.

const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
In production code, check the HTTP status and response headers before treating the response body as an image. Store API credentials in an environment variable or managed secret, set a timeout appropriate to your workload, and avoid logging secrets or full signed URLs.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one request and returns a screenshot or PDF. Cookie banners and consent prompts, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each of those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo or read the API docs.

Common implementation problems
The request returns an authentication error
Check that the API ID and API key are paired correctly and passed in the authentication method the provider documents. With HTML/CSS to Image, that means HTTP Basic authentication, API ID as username and API key as password. Rotate a key if it has been exposed in client-side code or logs.
The result is blank or missing page content
For URL-based capture, verify the URL is publicly reachable from the rendering service and that the page does not depend on a login or a local network. Pages that populate content after JavaScript runs may need a wait condition or delay if the chosen API supports it. For supplied markup, check that styles and assets are accessible in the renderer’s context rather than only from your local machine.

The rendered image differs from the browser preview
Rendering can vary with viewport size, device scale, font availability, asynchronous content, and animation timing. Specify a viewport and stabilize the page state where the API allows it. Compare the generated output with the intended target at the same dimensions; do not assume two services render identically, because no comparative accuracy testing is established here.
A request takes too long or times out
Reduce unnecessary external assets, avoid waiting for network activity that never becomes idle, and use a targeted selector or short explicit delay when supported. Set client timeouts deliberately and retry only transient failures, with a cap and backoff. Repeated retries can consume quota on services whose billing rules count attempts; confirm the provider’s policy before relying on retries being free.
Best Value
The free quota is exhausted or a feature is unavailable
Recheck the current pricing page and the plan’s feature matrix. A product may support a format or capability while reserving it for a paid tier. Reduce redundant renders, cache stable results where permitted, or choose a plan whose allowance and feature set match the workload.
Cost, performance, and reliability considerations
A free quota is a useful way to prototype, but it is not evidence of production-grade latency, uptime, or rendering quality. No comparative benchmark or independent reliability test is established for the services discussed here. Before depending on one for a business workflow, test representative pages and output formats, monitor HTTP failures and render duration in your own application, and establish a fallback or retry policy that respects the provider’s limits.

Rendering work can be affected by page complexity, third-party scripts, image downloads, and waits for asynchronous content. Keep input sizes and wait conditions bounded. For repeatable output, control viewport dimensions and, where available, fonts, cookies, headers, locale, and timing. If the API supports caching, determine whether cache hits count toward usage and how long a result remains valid. Treat these as questions to verify in the chosen provider’s current documentation rather than assumed behaviors.
For a small integration, compare the monthly allowance and free-plan feature limits. At larger volume, compare paid prices, included usage, overage rules, concurrency, and support terms directly on current provider pages. Pricing and feature availability change; the figures above should not be treated as permanent.
Frequently asked questions
Can a free API render a private page behind a login?
Only if the service supports an appropriate authenticated capture method and you configure it securely. Do not send private credentials or sensitive page content to a third-party renderer until you have reviewed its documentation and privacy terms. The free-tier details cited here do not establish a universal private-page workflow.
Is an HTML-to-image API the same as a screenshot API?
Not necessarily. HTML-to-image commonly describes rendering markup you provide, while a screenshot API commonly captures a webpage by URL. Some products support both. Check the accepted inputs and output formats for the exact endpoint you plan to call.
