To embed a PDF with Adobe PDF Embed API, register the website domain and obtain a client ID, load Adobe’s JavaScript viewer SDK, create an AdobeDC.View instance for a page container, and call previewFile() with the PDF location and file name. The API is described by Adobe as unlimited and free; its pricing is separate from Acrobat Services APIs that have document-transaction limits.
What the Adobe PDF Embed API does
PDF Embed API adds an interactive PDF viewer to a website or application. It is a JavaScript integration: your page loads Adobe’s viewer SDK, initializes a viewer with a domain-registered client ID, and supplies the PDF to preview. The viewer can appear in different layouts, including a sized container, full-window, inline, or lightbox mode. Adobe’s PDF Embed API overview describes the integration and its display options.
This is the right API when visitors need to view a PDF in the page. If the application also needs to create, convert, extract information from, or accessibility-tag PDF files, those are separate document-processing workflows. Adobe distinguishes PDF Embed API from its other PDF services in its services overview.
Get a client ID and register the website domain
Create credentials in Adobe’s developer console and register the domain where the viewer will run. Adobe requires a client ID. Once the page renders, the viewer checks that the client ID is being used on its registered domain; an invalid ID or domain mismatch blocks the preview. Register the deployment domain you intend to use, rather than assuming a key created for one site will work everywhere.
#1 Best Overall
Follow Adobe’s getting-started guide to create the project and obtain its client ID. Treat the ID as configuration for the registered site and verify the deployed origin when moving from local development to production.
Build a minimal embedded viewer
The smallest integration needs a page container, Adobe’s SDK script, a ready-event handler, a view instance, and a call to previewFile(). Replace YOUR_CLIENT_ID with the ID registered for the page’s domain and point url at a PDF the browser can retrieve in your deployment environment.
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<title>PDF viewer</title>
<style>
#adobe-dc-view { height: 700px; width: 100%; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="adobe-dc-view"></div>
<script src="https://acrobatservices.adobe.com/view-sdk/viewer.js"></script>
<script>
document.addEventListener("adobe_dc_view_sdk.ready", function () {
const view = new AdobeDC.View({
clientId: "YOUR_CLIENT_ID",
divId: "adobe-dc-view"
});
view.previewFile({
content: { location: { url: "https://example.com/files/guide.pdf" } },
metaData: { fileName: "guide.pdf" }
});
});
</script>
</body>
</html>
The script URL, event name, constructor, and previewFile() structure follow Adobe’s getting-started documentation. Adobe’s API basics also describes supplying content as a location or as a promise resolving to an ArrayBuffer.
Rank #2
Use a promise when your application obtains PDF bytes
If your application already fetches the PDF and holds its bytes, provide a promise that resolves to an ArrayBuffer instead of a location. The following illustrates the content shape; adapt the fetch to your application’s real document source and error handling.
Recommended Free Tools
const pdfPromise = fetch("https://example.com/files/guide.pdf")
.then(response => {
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`PDF request failed: ${response.status}`);
return response.arrayBuffer();
});
view.previewFile({
content: { promise: pdfPromise },
metaData: { fileName: "guide.pdf" }
});
Adobe’s reference supports a file promise, but the reviewed documentation does not establish specific CORS, authentication, browser-support, or security-header requirements. Confirm those deployment-specific details against the current technical reference and your PDF host’s configuration.
Choose the viewer layout
Pick a display mode based on the surrounding page, not on the PDF itself. A sized container is suited to a viewer embedded within an article or application panel; full-window, inline, and lightbox modes support other presentation patterns. Adobe documents the available modes and configuration in its overview.
Rank #3
For a sized container, give the host element an intentional height and width. A width of 100% lets it follow the page column, while the height should leave enough vertical room for reading without unexpectedly consuming the entire page. The minimal example sets the height in CSS; adjust it for the actual layout and responsive breakpoints.
Decide whether readers can annotate
A read-only viewing experience, visible annotation tools, and an application-controlled annotation workflow are different choices. Adobe’s annotation guide documents controls for enabling annotation APIs and including PDF annotations; both are disabled by default in the referenced guide. Adobe’s annotation documentation explains the distinction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Read-only: leave annotation capabilities off when visitors only need to inspect the document.
- Viewer annotation tools: configure the viewer UI if readers should add comments or markup.
- Application-controlled annotations: use the documented APIs to import, create, delete, update, or export comments and markup when your application needs to manage those operations.
Enabling annotation APIs by itself does not alter the original PDF. The two controls are separate: when both annotation APIs and inclusion of PDF annotations are enabled, annotation changes can alter the PDF. Decide explicitly whether a user’s edits should be part of the document they receive; do not assume showing annotation tools automatically saves changes into the original file.
Rank #4
For collaboration, Adobe allows applications to identify reviewers by name or email and persist annotation settings through custom callbacks. Adobe’s default comment identity is GUEST. User identity, permissions, and persistence therefore belong to the application integration rather than an assumed Adobe-provided user-management or storage layer.
Track PDF activity and understand telemetry
Adobe provides viewer and annotation callbacks, and documents integration with Adobe Analytics or Google Analytics 4 when those analytics products are already instrumented on the site. The configuration must match the analytics account, such as a report suite ID or GA4 measurement ID. Adobe’s current Google integration supports GA4, not Universal Analytics. See Adobe’s analytics guide for the supported setup.
Documented events include document load, page view, download, print, search, text copy, bookmark click, and zoom changes. Annotation-related events include actions such as adding, updating, deleting, or selecting annotations. You can route events through Adobe Analytics, GA4, or callbacks into your own analytics workflow. Adobe also documents a control to disable automatic PDF analytics collection.

Best Value
Adobe says the service collects product-use and performance information such as browser and operating-system type and version, device category, embed mode, file size, page count, rendering and download performance, and the webpage URL. Adobe says it does not store user-generated content and does not share that content with its servers. This service telemetry is distinct from analytics events your site chooses to configure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Is Adobe PDF Embed API free?
Adobe’s current pricing page describes PDF Embed API access as unlimited and free. The same page separately lists a free tier of 500 document transactions per month for the Acrobat Services API family, with paid plans for higher-volume or multi-product use. That transaction allowance is not the pricing limit for the embedded JavaScript viewer. Check Adobe’s pricing page when planning a workflow that combines viewing with document-processing APIs.
Troubleshooting common integration failures
Preview is blocked or does not initialize
- Check the client ID: confirm that the value in
AdobeDC.Viewis the ID created for this integration. - Check the registered domain: Adobe validates the client ID against the site domain after the page renders. A mismatched domain blocks the preview.
- Check SDK readiness: initialize the viewer from the
adobe_dc_view_sdk.readyevent, rather than running the constructor before the SDK is ready.
The viewer appears but the PDF does not load
- Verify the PDF URL and confirm the file can be fetched from the intended deployment environment.
- Confirm
contentuses a valid location URL or a promise resolving to PDF bytes, and provide a file name inmetaData. - If fetching bytes in your own code, inspect the fetch result and handle rejected requests before calling
previewFile(). - For access-controlled files or cross-origin hosting, verify the required behavior in the current Adobe technical reference and with the PDF host. The available documentation cited here does not establish specific authentication or CORS settings.
Annotations are visible but not in the downloaded PDF
Review the two separate annotation settings. Enabling annotation APIs alone does not change the original PDF; the configuration that enables APIs and includes PDF annotations together controls whether annotation changes can alter the document.
Analytics events are missing
Confirm that your site already has the selected analytics integration in place and that the configured report suite ID or GA4 measurement ID matches it. For custom analytics, register and handle the relevant callbacks in your own event pipeline.
