Why Link Previews Do Not Work in Outlook and How to Fix Them

“Link preview” can mean several different Outlook features. A missing rich URL card, a disabled hyperlink, a plain-text message, a mobile preview, the Reading Pane, and an attachment preview all have different fixes. First identify your Outlook client and whether the problem appears while composing, while reading, or only after clicking.

Identify the Outlook feature that is failing

Symptom Likely feature Where to troubleshoot
A pasted URL has no title, image or description card Rich link preview Outlook.com or Outlook on the web Link preview setting
A URL appears as text and cannot be clicked Message format or link blocking HTML formatting, Junk email security, or classic Outlook’s InfoBar
A link can be clicked but opens in Edge or another unexpected browser Link-opening preference New or classic Outlook browser settings
You mean the snippet shown beside an email in the message list Message-list preview Reading Pane and message-list settings
You mean a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file preview Attachment or Office-file behavior Attachment and Office link preferences

These controls are independent. Changing the Reading Pane will not restore a URL card, and changing the browser used for clicks will not create a preview.

Fix rich URL previews in Outlook.com and Outlook on the web

Microsoft says Link Preview is on by default in Outlook.com and Outlook on the web. When enabled, Outlook can show a link title, thumbnail and description when that information is available. If previews disappeared, check the setting directly.

  1. Open Outlook.com or Outlook on the web.
  2. Select the Settings gear.
  3. Choose Mail, then Compose and reply.
  4. Scroll to Link preview.
  5. Select Preview links in email, then save or close Settings.

In an older Outlook on the web layout, the path may be Options or Mail > Layout > Link preview. Select Preview links in email there. Microsoft documents this control at Use Link Preview in Outlook.com and Outlook on the web.

If only one URL lacks a card

A preview is metadata-dependent. The destination must respond successfully and expose information Outlook can use. A site may omit a title or image, require authentication, block automated retrieval, or be temporarily unavailable. Test a different public HTTPS URL. If other URLs preview normally, the Outlook setting is probably not the cause.

Composing versus reading

Test both a new draft and a received message. A card missing while composing points to the compose setting or destination metadata. A card missing only in received mail can reflect how the sender formatted the message or whether the destination was reachable when Outlook generated the preview.

Fix disabled links in new Outlook for Windows

New Outlook for Windows has a security option that can block attachments, pictures and links from senders outside your Safe senders and domains list. This is a link-enablement control, not the web app’s rich-preview checkbox.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Mail, then Junk email.
  3. Under Security options, find Block attachments, pictures, and links from anyone not in my Safe senders and domains list.
  4. Clear that option if it is selected.
  5. Save the change and reopen the message.

Microsoft says links should be enabled by default in new Outlook. If an organization manages this setting, your administrator may need to change the policy. See Links are disabled in Outlook for Windows email messages.

Check the sender before weakening protection

Rather than allowing every external sender, add a trusted address or domain to Safe senders when appropriate. Do not bypass warnings for an unfamiliar message merely to obtain a preview; a preview does not establish that a URL is safe.

Fix links disabled in classic Outlook for Windows

Classic Outlook can disable external content and links in a message. Open the message and look for an InfoBar warning that links or external content are disabled. Use the InfoBar control to enable the content when you trust the sender and destination.

Also inspect the message format. A message composed as Plain Text may show a URL without an active hyperlink. Switch to HTML for messages that need clickable shared links, then insert the address again. Microsoft lists these checks in the same Outlook link troubleshooting guidance.

Plain Text is why some shared links are not clickable

In new Outlook, Microsoft says shared links work only in HTML-formatted messages. In a Plain Text message, a shared URL is inserted as ordinary characters, so Outlook does not provide a clickable link or rich card.

  1. Start a new message or reply.
  2. Open the formatting controls and change the format from Plain Text to HTML.
  3. Paste the URL or use Insert link.
  4. Send a test message to yourself.

If your organization enforces Plain Text for a mailbox or distribution list, you may not be able to change it locally. Ask the administrator whether HTML mail is permitted.

Outlook mobile: a separate Link Preview control

Outlook for iOS and Android has its own setting. In the mobile app, open Settings > Link Preview and adjust the control there. To preview a received link, tap and hold it. Microsoft’s mobile guidance is documented in Link Preview, Powered by Bing.

This mobile setting does not change the Outlook.com/web compose setting. If previews work on desktop but not on a phone, check the mobile app rather than repeating desktop steps.

Do not confuse URL cards with other Outlook previews

Reading Pane and message-list snippets

The Reading Pane controls whether and where the email message itself is displayed. Message-list preview text controls the short text shown beside a subject. Neither setting generates a rich card for a URL. Microsoft’s instructions are at Use and configure the Reading Pane to preview messages in Outlook.

Attachment previews

PDF, image and Office attachment previews are governed by attachment handling, not Link preview. A URL pointing to a file can still behave as a normal web link. For Office files stored on OneDrive or SharePoint, a separate preference controls whether links open in desktop apps or in the browser; it does not restore a missing URL card. See Open file links directly in Office desktop apps.

When clicking opens in the wrong browser

If the URL is visible and clickable but opens in Microsoft Edge or another browser, diagnose link opening separately from preview generation. Microsoft documents browser preferences for both new and classic Outlook in Web links from Outlook emails and Teams chats open in Microsoft Edge. Changing that preference affects where a click opens; it does not make Outlook fetch title, image or description metadata.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Name the client: Outlook.com/web, new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows, iOS or Android.
  2. Name the symptom: missing card, unclickable text, blocked link, wrong browser, message-list snippet or attachment preview.
  3. Test a public HTTPS URL: this separates an Outlook setting from destination-specific metadata or availability.
  4. Check format: use HTML when a shared link must be clickable in new Outlook.
  5. Check security: review new Outlook’s Junk email security option or classic Outlook’s InfoBar.
  6. Check device-specific settings: mobile Link Preview and browser-opening preferences are separate.
  7. Retest after saving: close and reopen the draft or message so Outlook fetches the URL again.

If your goal is a reliable image of a webpage rather than Outlook’s small URL card, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

FAQ

Why do some Outlook links show a card while others do not?

Cards depend on the Outlook setting and on metadata and availability at the destination. A site can omit a usable image or description, require authentication, block retrieval or be temporarily unavailable.

Does turning on the Reading Pane restore link previews?

No. The Reading Pane displays the email message; it is separate from rich URL previews.

Can I make a Plain Text message clickable?

Not reliably in new Outlook. Microsoft states shared links require HTML formatting, so switch the message to HTML when policy allows.
