If you are unsure which instructions apply, identify the device and the app you normally use for photos first. “Screenshots” may be a media type, album or folder, and the labels are not interchangeable between platforms.
Find screenshots on an iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone instructions place screenshots in the Photos app’s media categories.
- Open Photos.
- Tap Collections.
- Tap Media Types.
- Tap Screenshots.
Your newest saved screenshots appear in that collection. Tap an image to open it, share it, edit it or check its details.

If the screenshot was just taken
On iOS 18 and earlier, a temporary thumbnail appears at the lower-left corner immediately after capture. Tap the thumbnail before it disappears to open the image. Apple’s iOS 26 instructions describe quick tools that appear after capture instead. The exact controls therefore depend on your iOS version; the Photos path above is the reliable way to return to an existing image.
When the Screenshots category is empty
Check that you are viewing the correct Photos library and that the capture completed. The platform instructions identify where saved screenshots are grouped, but they do not establish that every capture was successfully saved or backed up. A screenshot taken in another app may also still be processing before it appears.
Find screenshots on Android with Google Photos
Google’s Android route uses the local-device collection in Google Photos.
- Open Photos (Google Photos).
- Tap Collections.
- Tap On this device.
- Tap Screenshots.
On this device matters: it distinguishes screenshots stored on the phone from other views in your Photos library. Open the newest thumbnail to verify that it is the image you want.
If your phone does not have Google Photos
Google says phones without the Photos app can use the manufacturer’s Gallery app. Open Gallery and look for an album or folder named Screenshots. Android manufacturers can change the wording and layout, so use the app’s search or album tabs if you do not see it immediately.
Local file versus cloud copy
The Android directions establish where to look on the device. They do not prove that a screenshot has synced to a cloud library, nor that a failed capture created a file. If the image is important, open it from the local Screenshots collection and confirm that it has a thumbnail and normal file details before deleting or moving it.

Find screenshots on a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet
Samsung’s standard Gallery route is separate from Google Photos.
- Open Gallery.
- Tap Albums.
- Tap Screenshots.
Samsung notes that screens and settings can differ by carrier, software version and Galaxy model. Your device may therefore show slightly different tab names or album placement.

On applicable Galaxy configurations, Samsung also documents this possible storage path:
My Files → Internal storage → DCIM → Screenshots
Treat that path as a fallback rather than a universal rule. A different model or software build may use another folder, hide system media folders or expose the image only through Gallery.
Check that you are looking at the current device
If Gallery shows several similarly named albums, open the one under the active phone’s storage and sort by newest. A screenshot moved to an SD card, secure folder or another account may not appear in the ordinary Screenshots album.

Find screenshots on Windows
For a screenshot captured with Windows logo key + PrtScn, open Pictures → Screenshots in File Explorer. Microsoft’s documented location is tied to that shortcut; it is not a guarantee that every type of Windows screen capture is saved there.
Why another Windows capture may be elsewhere
Different capture methods can use different destinations. If you used an on-screen capture tool, a browser extension or an application’s own command, look for that tool’s save location or open its recent captures. Do not assume the Pictures folder contains images created by every method.
Viewing a phone screenshot from Windows
If by “recent screenshot” you mean an image stored on a connected Android phone, Microsoft’s Phone Link can show recent camera photos and screenshots without a USB cable. The cited feature requires Android 7.0 or newer and is intended for recent photos. This is a different route from the local Windows folder:
- Windows capture: File Explorer → Pictures → Screenshots (for Windows logo key + PrtScn).
- Android phone image: Phone Link, with a supported Android 7.0-or-newer device and the required pairing.

What to do when “Screenshots” is missing
1. Confirm the platform and app
On Android, first decide whether you opened Google Photos or the phone maker’s Gallery. Google documents different routes for those apps. On Galaxy devices, Samsung’s Gallery → Albums path is the manufacturer-specific starting point.

Use the app’s search field for Screenshots, then check Albums, Collections or on-device folders. A recent software update may move the album without changing the files.
3. Check the local storage view
Google Photos’ On this device collection and Samsung’s My Files fallback are useful when a cloud or timeline view does not show the image. A local view can reveal a file that has not synchronized.

4. Verify the capture method
On Windows, confirm whether you used Windows logo key + PrtScn. If not, inspect the application or utility that performed the capture. The Pictures → Screenshots path specifically applies to the documented keyboard shortcut.
5. Consider device and software variation
Samsung explicitly warns that model, carrier and software version affect available screens and settings. Android phones from other manufacturers can similarly label Gallery folders differently. Avoid deleting files while you are still locating the correct album.

Recent screenshot versus newly captured screenshot
Checking a recent screenshot means opening an existing file. Capturing a new screenshot is a separate operation, and the temporary thumbnail shown after capture is not the same as the permanent album or folder. FAQ
Are screenshots automatically backed up?
Not necessarily. The platform instructions identify local albums and folders, but they do not establish backup or sync completion. Check your device’s backup settings separately.
Why do I see a screenshot on my phone but not in Windows?
A phone-stored image and a locally captured Windows image use different routes. Use the phone’s Gallery or Photos app, or Phone Link for supported Android devices, rather than the Windows Pictures folder.
Can I use the Samsung DCIM path on every Galaxy?
No. Samsung presents My Files → Internal storage → DCIM → Screenshots as a possible path and warns that model, carrier and software differences can change storage locations.

Can I recover a screenshot that was never saved?
The documented album and folder routes only find files that exist. If no thumbnail or file appears in the relevant local location, the capture may not have completed; use the device’s capture method again.
Does Phone Link show every screenshot on an Android phone?
Microsoft describes Phone Link as showing recent photos and screenshots on supported Android 7.0-or-newer devices. It is not documented as a complete archive of every image.
