How to Fix MCP Server Fetch Failed Errors

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“MCP server fetch failed” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The failure may happen before a local server starts, while a client reaches a remote endpoint, during authentication or protocol negotiation, or later when a connected tool tries to fetch data from another service. First identify which stage failed; then check the corresponding process, endpoint, network, session, or tool layer.

Before changing configuration, record the MCP host and version, server and version, transport, exact error text, and any HTTP status or startup log. Remove API keys, tokens, and sensitive endpoint identifiers before sharing them.

Find the stage where the connection fails

Start with the host’s logs or connection status and place the error in one of four stages. A server that never starts calls for different checks than a tool that runs after a successful connection.

Stage What to look for First check
Process startup The host reports that the server failed to start, exits immediately, or produces a command error. Command, arguments, environment variables, process output, and whether the child process stays alive.
Connection or initialization The process starts, but the host cannot connect, initialize, or complete a handshake. Transport configuration, endpoint reachability, server logs, and protocol compatibility.
Authentication or session The endpoint responds, but access is denied or a request is rejected. Credentials, required headers, session handling, and the server’s documented status meanings.
Tool execution The server appears connected, but a particular tool returns “fetch failed” or another error. The tool’s own credentials, downstream service, outbound network access, and server logs.

MCP supports more than one transport. The TypeScript SDK documents stdio for a local child process communicating over standard input and output, Streamable HTTP for remote servers, and SSE as a fallback for older SSE-only servers. The right diagnostics depend on which transport and host you are using; see the TypeScript SDK documentation.

Check a remote MCP endpoint

Verify the provider’s exact URL

Compare the configured scheme, hostname, path, region, and resource identifiers with the instructions for that specific MCP provider. Do not copy another provider’s endpoint format. For example, Oracle’s guidance for its Autonomous AI Database MCP endpoint identifies an incorrect URL, HTTP instead of HTTPS, and a wrong region as possible causes. It calls out the HTTPS scheme, the oraclecloudapps.com domain, region identifier, and database OCID. Oracle’s exact instruction is: “Verify that the endpoint uses https, not http.” This applies to that Oracle service, not to every MCP server. See Oracle’s Troubleshooting MCP Server.

Test from the client’s runtime

A URL that works in a laptop browser may fail from the environment where the MCP host actually runs: an IDE subprocess, container, VM, or private network. Run checks from that same environment, substituting the real host and port:

nslookup <host>
nc -vz <host> 443
curl -v https://<endpoint>

These checks isolate different layers: DNS resolution, TCP reachability, and HTTPS access. A successful DNS lookup does not prove that the port is reachable, and an open port does not prove that the application endpoint or credentials are correct. Oracle’s private-endpoint guide also points to VCN routing and security rules when connectivity fails; use the provider’s own networking guidance for other deployments. See Oracle’s private endpoint connectivity guidance.

Inspect local stdio startup and initialization

With stdio, the MCP host launches a local child process and communicates through stdin and stdout. A configuration that works in an interactive terminal can fail in an IDE or service if that host has a different PATH, working directory, runtime, or environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the configured executable exists in the host’s environment, not only in your shell.
  2. Check that each argument is in the expected position and that paths with spaces are quoted as the host requires.
  3. Verify required environment variables are available to the child process. Do not paste secrets into a public log or issue.
  4. Read the full startup output and handshake logs. Check whether the process exits, hangs, or remains alive without completing initialization.
  5. Compare the configured package or executable version with the server’s compatibility requirements before changing dependencies.

An individual July 2026 report in the official MCP servers repository describes an mcp-server-fetch startup failure where a dependency resolver selected an incompatible major version; the reporter said a version constraint fixed that case. It is an example, not evidence that dependency pinning is a universal remedy. Check the specific issue and server documentation before altering a lockfile or package constraint: MCP servers repository issues.

Use HTTP status and logs to narrow a remote failure

If the server returns an HTTP response, save the status and response body before changing settings. Status codes are clues, not universal MCP meanings: behavior depends on the server, transport, and operating mode.

For example, the TypeScript SDK’s documented stateful Streamable HTTP mode rejects an invalid session ID with HTTP 404. In that mode, a request other than initialization that omits a required session ID is rejected with HTTP 400. Those details should not be generalized to every server or mode. Compare the response with the server’s own documentation and logs. See the TypeScript SDK documentation.

  • No HTTP response: investigate DNS, routing, TCP access, TLS, proxy configuration, or whether the service is listening at the configured address.
  • An authentication or authorization response: verify the credential, its scope, the required header format, and whether the host is sending it to the intended endpoint.
  • A session-related response: check whether the host and server agree on session handling, and reconnect using the provider’s documented procedure.
  • A response with an application error: read its body and server logs; changing transport or credentials blindly may obscure the cause.

Tell connection errors apart from tool fetch errors

A connected MCP server can still fail while a tool calls an external API or fetches a webpage. In that case, the transport and initial handshake may be healthy; the failure is downstream. Check the tool’s own credential, the target service’s availability and response, outbound network access from the server, and the server’s tool-execution logs.

The protocol reference distinguishes protocol errors from tool execution errors, which are represented in a result with isError: true. A 2024 issue report for the Brave Search server describes a user seeing the server connected over stdio and then receiving a tool-level “fetch failed.” That report illustrates the distinction but does not establish a general cause. See the tools protocol reference and the MCP servers issue reports.

Check protocol and client-server compatibility

If logs point to initialization or negotiation, compare the protocol revisions and transport options supported by the client and server. The TypeScript SDK documents automatic version negotiation and a failure when a client pins a protocol version the server does not offer. A generic “fetch failed” message by itself is not evidence of a version mismatch.

  1. Record the MCP host, client library if applicable, server, and their versions.
  2. Find the protocol revisions and transports each one supports in its version-specific documentation.
  3. Check logs for an explicit negotiation or initialization failure.
  4. Change a pinned version or transport only when the host/server documentation or logs support that diagnosis.

The TypeScript SDK’s current documentation covers its negotiation behavior: TypeScript SDK. The community protocol reference linked above is for revision 2024-11-05, so verify version-sensitive details against the protocol and SDK documentation for the software you actually run.

Retry with evidence, not guesswork

Once you have isolated a likely layer, make one targeted change, then restart or reconnect using the host or provider’s documented procedure. Keep a short record of what changed and whether the observed stage or response changed. Capture these details before retrying:

Redact access tokens, API keys, cookies, and sensitive endpoint identifiers. A useful report says where the failure occurs and includes the transport and relevant logs; the phrase “fetch failed” alone does not identify a root cause.

Or skip the browser setup

If the failing fetch is part of a website-capture workflow rather than MCP connectivity itself, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API returns an image or PDF, and its MCP server provides tools for AI clients. It is not a fix for an MCP transport, authentication, or protocol error.

For a website screenshot, this cURL request saves a WebP file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information should I include when asking for help with “MCP server fetch failed”?

Share the host/client and server versions, transport, exact error, failing stage, and relevant startup logs or HTTP status and response body. Redact credentials and sensitive endpoint identifiers.

Does “fetch failed” mean the MCP server itself is disconnected?

No. It may describe a failed connection, or a downstream fetch performed by a tool after the server has connected. Check whether the host reports a connected server and whether the error came from a tool result.
