To capture a website in Power Automate, use the desktop-flow action Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page. Choose Entire web page or Specific element, then save to a file or the clipboard. Use a web UI element for an element capture; a desktop UI element or a monitor screenshot requires a different action.
Capture a website in Power Automate Desktop
The website screenshot action captures the page currently displayed in an automated browser. It can capture the whole rendered page or a selected webpage element, and send the image to a file or the clipboard. It does not return an image variable: the saved file or clipboard contents are the result.
- Create or open a desktop flow. Work in Power Automate for desktop, not a cloud-flow-only designer.
- Launch or attach to a supported browser. Add Launch new Microsoft Edge, Launch new Chrome, or Launch new Firefox, or attach to an existing supported browser using the available action. The launch action returns a browser instance variable; retain it for the following browser actions.
- Open the page. Supply the target address in the launch action, or use Go to web page with the browser instance variable.
- Add the screenshot action. In the action pane, find Browser automation and add Take screenshot of web page. Set its browser instance to the one used to navigate.
- Choose what to capture. Set Capture to Entire web page for the page, or Specific element to capture a selected webpage element. For the latter, use the browser automation UI-element picker to capture the element.
- Choose where the image goes. Set Save mode to File and enter a full image path if you need a persistent image. Choose Clipboard if the next flow step will use the captured image there.
- Run and check the result. Confirm the file exists at the specified path, or verify the clipboard has the expected contents. The screenshot action itself does not provide an output variable.
Microsoft documents the browser action as capturing the webpage, or an element of it, currently displayed in the browser and saving the image to a file or clipboard. The procedure applies to Power Automate for desktop; available labels or browser support can vary with the installed edition and version.
Choose full-page, element, window, or screen capture
| What you need | Power Automate action | Element or target model | Destination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole rendered webpage | Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page; Capture: Entire web page | Automated browser page | File or clipboard |
| One webpage component | Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page; Capture: Specific element | Web UI element selected with the browser UI-element picker | File or clipboard |
| Foreground window or one or more monitors | Workstation > Take screenshot | Foreground window, all screens, primary screen, or selected screen | File or clipboard |
| Desktop control or other desktop UI element | UI automation > Take screenshot of UI element | Desktop UI element | Use the destination options provided by that action |
Use the browser action for website content, even if the browser happens to occupy the whole monitor. Use Workstation > Take screenshot when the target is a window or screen rather than the webpage structure. Web and desktop UI elements are distinct and cannot be substituted for one another. Browser web elements are generally identified through CSS selectors; desktop UI elements belong to the UI automation action group.

Save as PNG, JPG, or another image format
For a file capture, provide a full path and select the output format in the screenshot action. PNG and JPG are common choices for website evidence. The documented format choices also include BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, TIFF, and WMF. Choose the format based on the consuming application: PNG is commonly convenient for crisp interface text, while JPG may suit photographic content. That is a practical format choice, not a guarantee that either format will be available in every downstream workflow.
- Use File when the image must persist after the flow ends, be attached to a report, or be read by another process.
- Use Clipboard when a later step consumes clipboard content and there is no need for a named image file.
- Check the output path. Ensure the parent directory exists and the flow’s run context has permission to write there.
Browser extension or WebDriver?
Power Automate for desktop supports two browser interaction methods: the browser extension (the default method in Microsoft’s reference) and WebDriver. The browser connection method affects setup and which browser instance the flow can control; it does not change the choice between capturing the whole page and a web element.

Browser extension
Use the extension-based route when it is available and installed for the browser being automated. If browser actions cannot find or control the page, verify the required extension is installed and enabled, then confirm the flow is using the intended browser instance.
WebDriver
For WebDriver automation, the executable must match the installed browser version and be placed in %LocalAppData%MicrosoftPower Automate DesktopWebDrivers. WebDriver-based automation can attach only to browser instances launched by the flow; it cannot attach to a browser window opened manually. If the flow needs to use WebDriver, launch the browser from the flow rather than opening it yourself first.

Make a specific-element capture reliable
A specific-element capture depends on identifying the intended webpage element with a web UI element captured through the browser automation picker. Recapture the element if the page structure has changed, and inspect its selector if the action reports that the element with the specified CSS selector cannot be found.
- Navigate to the correct page before capturing the element.
- Use the browser UI-element picker rather than a desktop UI-element picker.
- Check that the selected element is still present and that the stored selector identifies the intended element.
- If the page changes between runs, update the captured element or selector and test again.
The recorder can generate both browser automation and UI automation actions during a recording session, which can speed up initial flow creation. Review the generated actions and make sure a webpage target uses browser automation and a web UI element.

Attended and unattended runs
A flow that succeeds while you are watching it may still fail in an unattended run. Unattended screenshots depend on the run’s desktop and session state as well as on browser automation setup. Microsoft documents an unattended failure, Failed to take screenshot with an invalid window handle, and directs users to its dedicated troubleshooting guidance and to verify the run’s desktop/session state. Treat this as a session or window-handle problem to diagnose, not as proof that the screenshot action is unsupported.
For unattended diagnosis, put a Take screenshot action immediately before the suspected failing action and another immediately after it. Save the files with distinct names such as before and after. This helps establish what the flow’s desktop looked like around the failure.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| “Element with specified CSS selector not found” | The page element is absent, changed, or identified by an out-of-date selector. | Navigate to the right page, recapture the web UI element, and inspect its selector. |
| File save fails | The parent folder does not exist or the run context cannot write to the destination. | Check the full path, create the directory if needed, and verify write access for the flow’s run context. |
| Clipboard save fails | The chosen clipboard destination could not be saved. | Check the action’s clipboard save failure details; if the image must persist, use File and a writable path. |
| Browser actions cannot control the browser | The extension may be missing or the WebDriver setup may not match the browser. | Confirm the extension is installed, or ensure the WebDriver executable matches the browser version and is in the documented folder. |
| WebDriver cannot attach to a browser | The browser was opened manually rather than launched by the flow. | Launch the browser from the desktop flow before using WebDriver-based automation. |
| Unattended run reports an invalid window handle | The run’s desktop/session state or window handle is invalid at capture time. | Verify the unattended desktop/session state and capture diagnostic screenshots before and after the failing action. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot from code rather than a desktop flow, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and an MCP server for developers. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—let AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is included on every plan. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
For a desktop flow, the screenshot is only one step in a browser session: launching or attaching to the browser, navigating to the page, and locating an optional element all affect whether the capture can complete. The Microsoft material for this procedure does not publish a general capture-speed figure or performance guarantee, so plan around the behavior of your own target pages and run environment rather than an assumed duration.
- Keep the browser instance consistent. Use the instance variable returned by the launch or attach action for navigation and capture.
- Prefer file output for durable evidence. It gives later steps or operators a concrete path to inspect; clipboard output is suitable when another action immediately consumes it.
- Budget for unattended diagnostics. Temporary before-and-after screenshots can reveal whether a failure happens before, during, or after the suspected action.
- Expect environment-sensitive failures. Browser extension availability, WebDriver/browser version matching, selector stability, filesystem permissions, and session state are all practical dependencies.
- No Power Automate screenshot price is asserted here. The cited Microsoft procedural pages do not establish a relevant usage statistic or a per-screenshot charge for this desktop-flow action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Power Automate desktop flow capture a webpage without saving an image file?
Yes. In the webpage screenshot action, choose Clipboard as the save mode so a subsequent step can consume the capture.
Can I capture a website with the Workstation screenshot action?
That action captures a screen or foreground window, not a webpage element. For page content or a specific web element, use Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page.
Does the browser WebDriver method work with a browser I opened by hand?
No. WebDriver-based automation can attach only to browser instances launched by the flow.
