How to Take a Screenshot of a Web Page (Full-Page Images and PDFs)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture an entire web page, use your browser’s full-page screenshot command rather than the ordinary screen shortcut. Edge and Firefox expose a direct full-page option, while Chrome provides one in DevTools. On an iPhone, Safari adds a Full Page choice after you take a screenshot. If the result should read like a document, print the page to PDF instead.

The right method depends on what you need: a fixed visual record, a long image containing everything below the fold, or a paginated PDF for filing and sharing.

Choose the output before you capture

A normal screenshot records only the pixels currently visible in the browser window. It is useful for a chart, error message, or small section, but it will omit content below the fold. A full-page capture scrolls through the page (or uses the browser’s page-rendering mechanism) and combines the result into one image. A PDF preserves a document-like layout with pages, margins, and selectable text, although its pagination can differ from the live site.

Goal Best first choice What to expect
Record one visible area Regular screenshot or area capture Only the current viewport or selected rectangle is included.
Save an entire scrolling page as an image Browser full-page screenshot Content below the fold is combined into one tall image; very long pages may be awkward to view.
Create a document for printing, filing, or emailing Print to PDF The browser creates pages, headers, footers, and breaks according to print settings and the site’s print styles.

Dynamic pages deserve caution. Images, embedded media, advertisements, consent dialogs, and content loaded only after scrolling can change while a capture is being assembled. Let important sections finish loading, and check the saved file rather than assuming every element was included.

Microsoft Edge: capture the full page

  1. Open the page in Edge on a desktop computer.
  2. Open Edge’s Screenshot feature. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  3. Choose Capture full page.
  4. Use the markup tools if you need to draw or highlight something.
  5. Copy the result or save it to your computer.

Microsoft describes this command as capturing everything at once without manually scrolling. The exact button placement and available actions can vary by device, market, and Edge version, so use the current label shown in your browser if it differs from an older tutorial.

When Edge is better than a regular screen shortcut

Use the full-page command when an article, receipt, documentation page, or terms screen continues below the viewport. A regular shortcut will not include that hidden content. For a document intended to be printed or archived, use Edge’s print dialog instead (described below), because a single tall image can be difficult to read.

Firefox: Save full page as an image

  1. Open the web page in Firefox for desktop.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot.
  3. Choose Save full page.
  4. Download the image, or choose the copy option if you only need it on the clipboard.

Firefox’s capture panel can also capture the visible area or a selected region. Firefox developer documentation describes a Web Console :screenshot helper with options such as device-pixel ratio, delay, and filename. That route is useful when you need repeatable, script-like control, but the context-menu workflow is simpler for a one-off capture.

If the full-page option is missing

  • Make sure you are using the desktop browser, not a restricted embedded view.
  • Update Firefox if the menu labels do not match current documentation.
  • Try the page’s print dialog when the page is too long or the screenshot tool cannot include a dynamically loaded section.

Chrome: use DevTools’ full-page capture

  1. Open the page in Chrome desktop.
  2. Open DevTools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS.
  3. Open the DevTools command menu (click the three-dot menu in DevTools and choose the command option, or use the command-menu shortcut shown by your Chrome version).
  4. Search for Capture a full-page screenshot.
  5. Run that command and save the generated image.

Chrome DevTools also documents commands for capturing a specific element, the mobile emulation view, or a selected area. The interface is version-sensitive, so search the current command menu instead of relying on a button position from an older screenshot.

Capture one element instead of the whole page

When a page contains a single table, product card, or chart you need to document, inspect that element in DevTools and use the element capture command. This avoids producing a very tall file with unrelated content. It also makes the result easier to place in a report or ticket.

Safari on iPhone: save a full web page

  1. Open the page in Safari on your iPhone.
  2. Take a screenshot using your iPhone’s hardware-button combination.
  3. Tap the screenshot preview before it disappears.
  4. Select Full Page at the top of the preview.
  5. Choose whether to save the result to Photos as an image or to Files as a PDF.

Apple documents Full Page for content longer than the iPhone screen, including an entire Safari webpage. The available save destinations and labels can vary with iOS version and the app you use to open the file. If Full Page is not offered, the current screen may not be a supported scrollable document, or the capture may have been initiated outside Safari.

Save a web page as a PDF

PDF is usually the better choice when the reader must navigate pages, search text, or print the result. It is not a pixel-for-pixel guarantee: sites can use separate print styles, hide navigation, reflow columns, or insert page breaks.

Windows or macOS print workflow

  1. Open the page and wait for the content you need to load.
  2. Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on Mac.
  3. In the system or browser print dialog, select a PDF destination if one is offered (for example, a built-in “Save as PDF” destination).
  4. Review page range, orientation, margins, scale, headers, and footers.
  5. Save the file, then open it to verify that headings, images, and the final page are present.

Dialog names differ by operating system, browser, and installed printers. If a page looks wrong in PDF, try landscape orientation, narrower margins, or a different scale. Removing browser-added headers and footers can produce a cleaner document, but it also removes the URL and date that may be useful for provenance.

Handling long, interactive, or changing pages

Make lazy-loaded content appear

Some pages request images only when you scroll near them. Scroll through the page once, wait for images and embedded sections to finish loading, then start the capture. A full-page tool may trigger its own scrolling, but behavior differs between sites and browsers.

Close overlays first

Cookie notices, newsletter forms, chat bubbles, and sticky navigation can cover content or become part of the image. Dismiss anything you do not want recorded before capturing. If a consent dialog blocks the page, make the appropriate choice according to the site’s policy; do not attempt to bypass an access control.

Check animation and live data

Animated banners, rotating carousels, clocks, dashboards, and personalized feeds may change between the top and bottom of a capture. Pause media where possible and record the capture time in your notes when the page is evidence rather than a casual reference.

Respect access controls and privacy

Do not capture private account pages on a shared computer, and review the image for passwords, tokens, addresses, or personal data before sending it. A screenshot is a copy of what was displayed; saving it does not grant permission to redistribute copyrighted or confidential material.

When the browser method fails

Symptom Likely cause Practical fix
The image stops at the viewport A regular screenshot command was used. Choose the browser’s full-page command, not visible-area capture.
Lower sections are blank Images or components load only after scrolling, or a request timed out. Scroll through the page first, wait, disable unnecessary blockers for that site, and retry.
A cookie or chat panel covers text An overlay was still open. Close or resolve the panel before capturing.
The PDF has unexpected breaks The site’s print CSS and your print settings reflow the page. Adjust orientation, scale, margins, and page range; compare with a full-page image if exact visual layout matters.
The command or shortcut is absent Browser, device, or version differences. Use the current command menu, update the browser, or switch to print-to-PDF. Do not assume an older tutorial’s labels are universal.
The file is enormous A very tall page at high pixel density creates a large image. Capture only the required element, reduce display scale where supported, or use a PDF with selected pages.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.

It also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. Other options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, selector hiding, waits for selectors/delays/network idle, request and resource blocking, headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage information, and an OpenAPI specification. Common screenshot-API parameter names also work when switching.
