To capture a website screenshot, use your browser’s built-in tool: Edge and Firefox offer direct full-page commands, while Chrome uses DevTools. Choose a visible or viewport capture when you need only what is on screen; choose a full-page or full-size capture when the image must include content below the fold.
Choose the capture you actually need
A regular screenshot records the current viewport—the part of the page visible in the browser window. It does not automatically include content farther down the document. A full-page option scrolls or renders the document so that content below the fold is included.
- Visible/viewport capture: Best for a dialog, chart, error message, or anything already on screen.
- Full-page capture: Best for archiving an article, sharing a landing page, reviewing a long design, or documenting a page in one image.
- Selected-area capture: Best when you need only a region and do not want browser chrome or unrelated page content.
- Element capture: Useful for one page component, such as a card or table, when the browser or developer tools provide that option.
Before saving, decide whether you need annotations, clipboard copying, a file download, or a particular image format. Also remember that dynamic pages can behave differently during a long capture: lazy-loaded images, nested scrolling areas, sticky headers, and animation are not handled identically by every browser.
Microsoft Edge: capture a full webpage
Full page or selected area
- Open the page in Edge on a desktop computer.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open the page’s right-click menu and choose Screenshot. You can also open Screenshot from Edge settings.
- Choose Capture full page to include the entire document. For a partial image, select the area you want instead.
- Use the overlay’s markup tools if needed.
- Copy the result or save it to a file from the overlay.
Edge’s labels and availability can vary by device type, market, and browser version. If the shortcut does not open Screenshot, use the right-click menu or settings entry and look for the current Screenshot command.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirefox: save the visible view or the whole page
Full-page screenshot
- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. On Windows or Linux, you can press Ctrl+Shift+S; on macOS, press Command+Shift+S.
- Choose Save full page for the complete document.
- Choose a save location when Firefox prompts you.
Visible view, region, or element
Choose Save visible when you need only the current viewport. Firefox also lets you drag to select a region or select a page element before saving. This is often faster than creating a full-page image when you are documenting one control or message.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Chrome: use DevTools for a full-size screenshot
Capture the entire document
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Open DevTools. You can use Chrome’s developer-tools shortcut for your operating system or open the browser menu and choose the developer-tools command.
- Enable Device Mode (the phone-and-tablet icon) in DevTools.
- Open the DevTools More options menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves an image that extends beyond the viewport.
Capture only what is visible or a chosen area
Choose Capture screenshot for the current viewport. Chrome’s Command Menu also includes Capture area screenshot for selecting a region. The exact DevTools layout can change, so use the menu’s search if a command is not immediately visible.
Chrome’s full-page workflow is a developer-tools operation rather than a dedicated page menu. If you do not want DevTools open, Firefox or Edge may be quicker for a one-off capture.
Firefox Developer Tools: capture one element or the entire page
Enable the full-page control
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and its toolbox settings.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page if the full-page button is not present.
- Use the screenshot control to capture the full page; Firefox saves the resulting image in Downloads.
Capture a specific DOM element
- Open the Inspector.
- Find the element you want.
- Open that node’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.
Element capture is useful for a component that extends outside the visible viewport or for avoiding unrelated content around it.
Browser workflows compared
| Browser/workflow | Full-page command | Visible or area capture | Notable controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge desktop | Capture full page | Area selection | Copy, save, and markup from the overlay |
| Firefox desktop | Save full page | Save visible, region, or element | Direct page menu and keyboard shortcuts |
| Chrome | Capture a full size screenshot in DevTools Device Mode | Capture screenshot or Command Menu area capture | Requires DevTools workflow |
| Firefox Developer Tools | Enable and use the full-page screenshot control | Screenshot Node for an element | Files go to Downloads |
For the fastest native route, Firefox and Edge have the most direct documented page-level menus. Chrome is appropriate when you already use DevTools or need its device-emulation workflow. Your browser version and device can change menu names or availability.

Improve the result before you capture
Prepare the page
- Wait for the page’s visible content to finish loading.
- Close cookie notices, newsletter prompts, chat bubbles, and other overlays if they obscure the page.
- Set the browser zoom and window width deliberately; responsive layouts can change at different widths.
- Pause videos or animations when a stable frame matters.
- For a long page, scroll through it first if you need to trigger lazy-loaded images.
Check the capture
- Confirm that the top and bottom of the document are present.
- Look for repeated or missing sticky headers.
- Check images, embedded frames, and fonts that may load late.
- Verify that private information, account details, and browser notifications are not visible.
No browser workflow guarantees perfect output for every dynamic page. Nested scroll containers, cross-origin embeds, lazy loading, and scripts that react to scrolling can produce different results.
When a browser capture fails
The shortcut does nothing
Use the browser menu instead of the shortcut. Keyboard shortcuts can be intercepted by the operating system, a page, or another application. Confirm that you are using a desktop browser version that supports the documented command.
The full-page option is missing
In Edge or Firefox, open the page’s context menu and look for Screenshot or Take Screenshot. In Chrome, open DevTools, enable Device Mode, and check the More options menu. In Firefox Developer Tools, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page in toolbox settings.

Images or sections are blank
Wait longer, reload, and scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading. Try disabling an animation or capturing after the page reaches a stable state. A page that relies on an embedded frame or a separate scroll container may not behave like one continuous document.
The image contains popups or a cookie banner
Dismiss the overlay before capturing. If it cannot be dismissed reliably, an automated screenshot service may be more practical because it can perform page preparation before the capture.
The screenshot is too large to share
Use a selected-area or element capture, reduce the browser viewport width, or export and resize the image. A full-page image can be very tall even when its width is modest.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use an extension?
Consider a browser extension only when native tools lack a needed export, editing, or workflow feature. Check its privacy policy, permissions, supported browsers, and whether processing happens locally or on a remote service. Vendor descriptions are not independent verification, so avoid installing an extension merely to replace a built-in full-page command.

FAQ
Can I capture a webpage without installing software?
Yes. Edge, Firefox, and Chrome include screenshot workflows. Edge and Firefox provide direct browser menus; Chrome’s documented full-page method uses DevTools.
Why is a full-page screenshot different from a PDF?
A full-page screenshot is one raster image of the rendered page. A PDF is a paginated document and may reflow or split content across pages. Choose the format based on whether visual fidelity or document-style printing matters.
