To preserve a page as it appears now, submit its URL to the Wayback Machine’s Save Page Now feature and keep the archived link it returns. These are related but different jobs: the Wayback Machine shows web captures, not a guaranteed, complete gallery of screenshots.
A domain’s history does not guarantee that every page beneath it was saved. And an archive capture may be missing images, styles, or interactive behavior. The steps below explain how to find, inspect, and save captures—and how to make a separate screenshot of a page today.
How to view a website’s past captures

Open the Wayback Machine and enter the full URL of the page you want to inspect. Use a specific page address when you need that page’s history; searching only for the domain does not establish that a particular subpage was captured.

Review the available capture dates and select a date or capture to open. The results show what the archive has for that URL, not a complete record of every change or every visit.

Read the archived page and check its URL and capture information. The timestamp in the archived address identifies the capture being viewed; confirm it matches the date relevant to your question.

Inspect important images, styling, links, and interactive elements individually. A page that opens is not necessarily a complete visual or functional reproduction.
The Wayback Machine’s calendar markers can help you find dates, but do not treat a marker alone as proof that the page’s content is intact. The Internet Archive Help Center describes blue captures as 2xx responses, green as 3xx, orange as 4xx, and red as 5xx. Check the actual capture and its timestamp, especially when citing or sharing an archived page. See the Internet Archive’s guide to using the Wayback Machine.
How to save a page as it looks now
Use Save Page Now when you want to ask the Internet Archive to preserve one current page. Enter the page’s URL in the feature and save the archived URL it provides. That resulting link is the one to revisit or cite; submitting the live URL is not itself a preservation record.

Save Page Now is not a site-wide crawl. The Internet Archive’s Help Center puts the boundary plainly: “Please note, this method only saves a single page, not the whole site.” It says the feature saves the entered page, including images and CSS, but does not save outlinks or start a site-wide crawl. A separate submission is needed for another page, and a save now does not guarantee future captures. The Help Center also documents crawling and SSL-related exceptions. What to check after saving

Open the returned archived URL and verify that it shows the intended page and capture date.

Check essential images and styles; a page capture can have missing resources even when its main document appears.

Try important links and interactive controls. Forms and JavaScript features that depend on the original server may not work in an archived rendering.

If you need more than one URL, save or arrange to capture each relevant page rather than assuming that a page save covers its links or the rest of the domain.

For ordinary one-page lookup or preservation, start with the Wayback Machine and Save Page Now. Archive-It is the documented organizational route when the need is managed, recurring collection work—not a prerequisite for an individual trying to save a page.
Why an old page may be missing or incomplete
There are two separate questions: whether the archive has a capture, and whether that capture can replay the page’s original appearance and behavior. A missing result answers neither question definitively about the page’s past; it only means the archive does not offer a capture for the lookup you made.
No capture appears
The Internet Archive says pages may be absent because crawlers did not discover the site, the page was password-protected, robots.txt blocked crawling, the page was inaccessible, or the owner asked for exclusion. A domain result also does not imply that every subpage was captured. A missing page is not proof that it never existed.
The page opens, but content is broken
Images may be gray or broken when the image resource itself was not captured. Stylesheets and other assets can also be absent. JavaScript relying on the original server, forms, and other interactive components may not work in the archived version; simpler HTML is generally easier to archive. Treat visual or functional completeness as something to verify, not assume.

An archived link shows unexpected content
Check the timestamp in the archived URL and the capture/status information. An archived link can resolve to a nearby capture, and when a resource is missing it may lead to the live web. Verify the date and content actually displayed before quoting, citing, or relying on the page.
Make a screenshot of a page today
A Wayback capture and a screenshot are not interchangeable. The Wayback Machine is for archived web pages and captures; it does not promise a complete static screenshot history for every URL. If your immediate need is a visual record of the page as it renders now, create and store a screenshot separately. Keep its date and source URL with the file. That gives you a record you control, but it does not retroactively establish what the page looked like on an earlier date.

Keep a useful, verifiable record

For an older page, preserve the archived URL and note the capture timestamp you actually inspected.

For a page you are preserving now, retain the Save Page Now result and inspect its assets and behavior.

For a visual record under your control, save a separate current screenshot with the page URL and capture date. Do not describe it as an earlier version unless you have evidence for that date.

For recurring collection work across many pages, assess the scope and current terms of an organizational archiving service rather than treating a one-page save as a crawl.
