Website Thumbnail Image Size: The Right Dimensions for WordPress, Open Graph, YouTube and Responsive Cards

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single “website thumbnail size.” The correct canvas depends on where the image will appear: a WordPress image preset, a social link preview, a YouTube video or Short, or a responsive card in your own layout. Choose the destination first, then match its aspect ratio, crop rules, file limits and display width.

This guide gives the current dimensions and implementation steps for each case, explains how to avoid blurry or cropped thumbnails, and shows how to test the final result.

Start with the rendering system, not a pixel number

“Thumbnail” can mean a generated WordPress derivative, an Open Graph preview, a YouTube custom thumbnail or an image inside a CSS card. Those systems do not share one standard. A 150×150 square that works in a WordPress archive may be unusable as a 16:9 video image.

  • WordPress: the site and theme decide which registered size is used.
  • Social or messenger preview: the crawler reads Open Graph metadata and the network applies its own display and crop rules.
  • YouTube: upload dimensions and orientation are defined by YouTube.
  • Your own card or grid: your CSS aspect ratio, responsive breakpoints and image delivery determine the result.

Pixel dimensions are only one part of the decision. Keep the aspect ratio, compression, crop behavior, file weight and reserved layout space consistent with the destination.

WordPress thumbnail sizes

WordPress’s defaults are configurable settings, not a universal web standard. The official Theme Handbook lists these generated sizes:

WordPress name Default maximum dimensions Typical use Crop behavior
thumbnail 150×150 px maximum Small square lists and admin views Can be hard-cropped when enabled
medium 300×300 px maximum In-content or medium cards Proportional by default
medium_large 768 px wide, no height limit Responsive content images Proportional
large 1024×1024 px maximum Large content or featured-image displays Proportional
full Original upload Fallback when no derivative is selected Original proportions

Check the actual settings

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings → Media.
  2. Review the thumbnail width and height, and whether Crop thumbnails to exact dimensions is enabled.
  3. Review the maximum width and height for medium and large images.
  4. Inspect the active theme documentation or code for additional registered sizes.

The theme may call a custom size instead of one of these defaults. A developer can register an exact crop with set_post_thumbnail_size(50, 50, true); omitting the final true keeps proportional resizing. If you change settings, regenerate existing derivatives with a trusted thumbnail-regeneration tool or command-line workflow; changing the setting does not automatically rewrite every old upload.

How to choose a source image

Start with an original that is at least as large as the largest rendered slot. For a card that can reach 768 CSS pixels on a high-density display, a source around 1536 physical pixels wide gives the browser room for a 2× rendition. Let WordPress serve the generated size that matches the slot rather than sending the original to every visitor.

Hard cropping is useful when every card must have identical geometry, but protect faces, logos and text inside a safe central area. Proportional resizing preserves the whole image but can produce uneven card heights unless the layout reserves an aspect-ratio box.

Open Graph images for link previews

Open Graph does not prescribe one universal thumbnail canvas. The required properties are og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Set og:image to the preview image URL. Where supported, add these structured properties:

  • og:image:secure_url for an HTTPS image URL.
  • og:image:type such as image/jpeg or image/png.
  • og:image:width and og:image:height.
  • og:image:alt describing the image.

A 1200×630 landscape canvas is a practical convention for many social previews, not a guarantee. The consuming network can crop or letterbox it, so check the current debugger or preview tool for each network your audience uses. Keep important text and faces away from the edges, and avoid putting a logo where a platform’s overlay may cover it.

Example metadata

<meta property="og:title" content="Article title">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article-1200x630.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:secure_url" content="https://example.com/images/article-1200x630.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/jpeg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Description of the article image">

Use a stable, publicly reachable URL. If a preview is stale, the network may have cached the old image; changing the image URL (for example, with a new filename) is often more reliable than repeatedly editing the same file.

YouTube thumbnail dimensions

Standard videos

YouTube currently recommends 3840×2160 pixels in a 16:9 ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are accepted. The documented upload limit is 2 MB for video thumbnails on mobile and 50 MB on desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shorts

For vertical Shorts, use 2160×3840 pixels in a 9:16 ratio, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Keep titles and faces inside a central safe area because interface elements and crops can cover the top and bottom.

Important vertical-video behavior

YouTube warns that a vertical video using a 16:9 custom thumbnail can be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages. The custom image remains visible in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. Supply a vertical design for a Short instead of relying on a horizontal image.

Responsive thumbnails in your own website

Design for the largest slot, then deliver smaller variants. The browser should not download a 2500-pixel original for a 320-pixel card.

Reserve the layout space

Set the image’s intrinsic dimensions or an aspect-ratio box so the browser can reserve space before the file arrives. Explicit dimensions improve cumulative layout stability by preventing content from jumping as the image loads.

Serve responsive files

<img
  src="/images/story-800.jpg"
  srcset="/images/story-400.jpg 400w,
          /images/story-800.jpg 800w,
          /images/story-1200.jpg 1200w"
  sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 33vw"
  width="1200"
  height="675"
  alt="Descriptive alternative text"
  loading="lazy">

Use object-fit: cover only when cropping is intentional. Use contain when the entire artwork must remain visible, accepting possible empty space. Test at every breakpoint, including high-density screens and narrow mobile widths.

Format, compression and file weight

JPEG is efficient for photographs; PNG preserves sharp transparency and flat graphics but can be heavier; GIF is limited and usually unsuitable for large photographic thumbnails. WebP can reduce weight when your delivery stack supports it. Export at the destination’s required dimensions, remove unnecessary metadata, and inspect the compressed result at 100% zoom.

An image wider than the content area wastes bytes and can disrupt a fixed layout. Oversized files generally take longer to load, especially on mobile connections. Do not chase a supposed engagement or SEO guarantee: no universal thumbnail dimension guarantees rankings or click-through performance.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Name the destination: WordPress preset, Open Graph, YouTube video, Shorts or a custom card.
  2. Measure the rendered slot: include the largest desktop and mobile widths.
  3. Choose the aspect ratio: square, 16:9, 9:16 or the ratio your design actually uses.
  4. Create a sufficiently large source: allow for high-density displays without sending it everywhere.
  5. Define crop rules: proportional, centered hard crop, focal-point crop or contain.
  6. Export an appropriate format and compressed file.
  7. Declare width and height in HTML and verify the reserved space.
  8. Test the real renderer: WordPress template, social preview debugger, YouTube surfaces and responsive browsers.

Capturing a thumbnail from a live webpage

If you need a thumbnail of a rendered page rather than an uploaded design, a browser must load the page, wait for its content and capture the correct viewport. Test lazy-loaded images, cookie dialogs, responsive breakpoints and authentication requirements before automating at scale.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed.

It supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, blocked ads/trackers/requests/resource types, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which eases migration. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting thumbnail problems

The image is blurry

Check the rendered CSS width, then provide a derivative roughly twice that width for high-density screens. Do not enlarge a small WordPress derivative or a compressed YouTube export.

The subject is cut off

Identify whether the template uses hard cropping, object-fit: cover or a platform crop. Reframe the source with a safe area, change the focal point or use proportional resizing.

The card jumps while loading

Add accurate width and height attributes or an explicit aspect-ratio. Confirm that the CSS box matches the image’s intended ratio.

WordPress keeps using an unexpected size

Inspect the rendered HTML and the theme’s image-size registration. The active theme or plugin may request a custom derivative. Regenerate files after changing settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A social preview shows an old image

Confirm that og:image is publicly reachable and returns the expected MIME type. Use the network’s current debugger, then publish a new image URL if its cache remains stale.

YouTube rejects the upload

Verify orientation, minimum dimension, format and the device-specific size limit. Compress the file without reducing text legibility.

The screenshot is blank or blocked

Check authentication, JavaScript waits, bot checks and resource failures. With ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to distinguish a clean capture from an unbilled failed load.

FAQ

Is 1280×720 a universal website thumbnail size?

No. It is a 16:9 canvas that may fit some video or card layouts, but WordPress, Open Graph and YouTube follow different rules.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should every thumbnail use the same aspect ratio?

No. Standard YouTube videos are 16:9, Shorts are 9:16, and a WordPress theme may require a square or custom crop.

Do dimensions affect SEO directly?

Dimensions alone do not guarantee rankings. Performance, accessibility, correct metadata and a stable layout matter more than a magic pixel value.

Can I use one image for WordPress and social sharing?

You can, but separate derivatives usually produce better crops. A WordPress card and an Open Graph preview rarely have identical ratios.
