How to Capture the Full Screen in Chrome (Webpage or Entire Display)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Full screen” in Chrome can mean two different things. To capture an entire webpage, use Chrome DevTools and choose Capture a full size screenshot. To capture every pixel on your monitor—including Chrome’s interface, other windows, and the taskbar or dock—use your operating system’s screen-capture tool. The correct method depends on which result you need.

Choose the capture you actually need

What you want Best method What it includes
Complete webpage Chrome DevTools → device-toolbar More options → Capture a full size screenshot The page from top to bottom, including content below the viewport; not other windows or the desktop
Visible browser viewport DevTools → More options → Capture screenshot Only the portion of the page currently visible in the emulated viewport
Entire display ChromeOS Screen Capture or Windows Snipping Tool Everything visible on the selected display, including applications outside Chrome

A full-page webpage image is not the same as a full-display screenshot. Decide first whether you need the document or the physical screen.

Capture an entire webpage with Chrome DevTools

This is Chrome’s built-in route for a long webpage. It captures content that is below the fold without requiring an extension.

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome and wait for the content you want to preserve to load.
  2. Open DevTools. You can use the Chrome menu → More tools → Developer tools.
  3. Turn on the device toolbar if it is not already visible. The device-toolbar button lets DevTools emulate a phone, tablet, or custom viewport.
  4. In the device toolbar, open the More options menu.
  5. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome renders the complete page, including content that is not currently visible in the viewport, and sends the image through the normal browser download flow.

Google’s Device Mode documentation distinguishes this from Capture screenshot, which records only what you currently see in the viewport. Chrome’s documentation does not promise one universal filename or download folder, so check your browser’s download location rather than relying on a particular name.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

Make the result match your intended layout

  • Set the viewport first: choose a device preset or enter a custom width before capturing. Responsive pages may show different navigation, columns, or images at different widths.
  • Use the correct page state: expand accordions, open menus, or dismiss overlays before starting the capture. DevTools records the rendered state at that moment.
  • Wait for images and embedded content: lazy-loaded images may not appear until you scroll or interact with the page. If a section is blank, let it load and repeat the capture.
  • Check sticky elements: fixed headers, chat buttons, and cookie notices can repeat or cover content in a long image. Close or hide them when the page allows it.
  • Verify the download: open the resulting image and inspect the bottom of the page. A very tall page can be difficult to review at normal zoom.

Capture only what is visible in Chrome

For a normal viewport image, open DevTools, turn on the device toolbar, choose More options, and select Capture screenshot. This is useful for documenting the current responsive layout, but it deliberately excludes content below the viewport.

Capture the entire display while Chrome is open

Chromebook and ChromeOS

ChromeOS has a dedicated Screen Capture tool. Press the Chromebook’s Screenshot key, or press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5.

  1. Open the Screen Capture toolbar.
  2. Choose Screenshot.
  3. Select Take a full screen screenshot.

ChromeOS automatically copies the screenshot to the clipboard. It saves screenshots in the Downloads folder by default, and Screen Capture settings can change the destination folder. If you need to paste the image immediately, use the clipboard; if you need a file, open the saved image from the configured location.

Windows 10 and Windows 11

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool provides a Full screen mode that captures the entire screen. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the capture overlay, then choose the full-screen option. Pressing Print Screen (PrtSc) also places a static image of the entire screen in the clipboard.

The capture is copied into Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, and share it. Windows may offer a Screenshots folder, but folder behavior depends on your settings; use Save as when you need a known location or file type.

Other operating systems

The documented procedures here cover Chrome DevTools, ChromeOS, and Windows. macOS and Linux include their own screenshot utilities, but exact shortcuts and save locations vary by release and desktop environment. Use the current screenshot instructions for your specific operating system rather than assuming a Windows or ChromeOS shortcut will work.

Use an extension for repeated full-page work

Chrome DevTools is sufficient for an occasional one-off capture. A dedicated extension can be more convenient when you repeatedly capture long pages, need editing controls, or want PDF and image export in one workflow.

GoFullPage – Full Page Screen Capture is listed in the Chrome Web Store as a full-page capture extension. Its listing shows version 8.9 with a changelog entry dated 2026-09-24, along with earlier entries covering PDF/image export and capture fixes. Treat it as an optional convenience, not a requirement: installing an extension adds another permissioned component to your browser, while DevTools is already built in.

When an extension is the better fit

  • You capture many pages every day and want a toolbar button instead of opening DevTools each time.
  • You need built-in annotation, cropping, or a choice between image and PDF output.
  • You want a repeatable workflow for pages whose layout is awkward in DevTools.

Troubleshooting full-page captures

The image contains only the visible section

You selected Capture screenshot, which is the viewport command. Reopen the device-toolbar More options menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot.

The page is cut off or ends early

Confirm that the page finished loading before capture. Trigger lazy content by scrolling through the page, wait for images or embedded frames, then capture again. Infinite-scroll pages may have no fixed “bottom”; capture after loading the amount of content you need.

Images or fonts are missing

Wait for network activity to settle and repeat the capture. A blocked request, an unloaded lazy image, or a third-party frame can leave a blank region. If the page requires a login, sign in in the same tab before opening DevTools.

A cookie banner, chat bubble, or fixed header covers the page

Dismiss the banner or close the widget before capturing. If the site does not provide a close control, inspect the page state and use an extension or a different capture workflow; do not assume the overlay will disappear in a full-size render.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result is unexpectedly narrow or wide

Check the device-toolbar width and device preset. Responsive breakpoints can change the page substantially. Set a custom viewport that matches the layout you intend to document and capture again.

The file is difficult to find

Chrome uses its normal download flow, so open the browser’s download list and reveal the file location. On ChromeOS, check the configured Screen Capture destination; on Windows, use Snipping Tool’s Save as command when the default folder is unclear.

The whole desktop is missing

DevTools captures a webpage, not the operating-system desktop. Use ChromeOS Screen Capture or Windows Snipping Tool’s full-screen mode for other windows, the taskbar, or multiple applications.

For automated captures, ScreenshotNeo returns a webpage screenshot or PDF from one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Chrome full-page screenshot include content in other tabs?

No. DevTools captures the rendered webpage in the active tab only; it does not include other tabs, windows, applications, or the desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I capture a webpage as a PDF instead of an image?

Chrome DevTools’ full-size command produces an image. For automated PDF output, ScreenshotNeo’s capture_pdf tool and API workflow support PDF capture.

Will an infinite-scroll page always produce one complete image?

Not necessarily. An infinite-scroll page has no fixed end, so load the amount of content you need before capturing or use a workflow that captures a defined state.
