On desktop Chrome, open DevTools, open the Command Menu, search for screenshot, then choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page. For repeatable captures, run Headless Chrome with --screenshot. On Android, use the phone’s Power and Volume Down controls or its scrolling-screenshot command.
Use Chrome DevTools for a one-off screenshot
Chrome’s built-in DevTools workflow needs no extension and produces a PNG. It is the best choice when you are already viewing the page and need either the current viewport or a complete, vertically scrolling capture.
- Open the web page in Chrome and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Open DevTools from More tools > Developer Tools. You can also use your operating system’s DevTools shortcut.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu. Search for screenshot.
- Choose Capture screenshot to save only the visible viewport.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot to capture the complete page, including content below the fold.
- When Chrome prompts for a location, select a folder and save the generated PNG.
The full-size command captures the page as it exists in the emulated viewport. It is not the same as taking several screen grabs and stitching them together: Chrome renders the page at once and includes the document area outside the visible window.
Capture a full page at a specific desktop or mobile width
Device Mode lets you test a responsive layout before taking the screenshot. Open the device toolbar in DevTools, select a device preset or enter a custom width and height, then open the More options menu and run the screenshot command. If you want the handset outline around the result, enable Show device frame in device-specific mode before capturing.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
A custom viewport is useful for documentation and bug reports because the dimensions are explicit. Record the width, height, zoom level, and device-pixel setting with your project so another person can reproduce the image. A mobile emulation screenshot is still a desktop Chrome capture; it does not reproduce every hardware or operating-system detail of a real phone.
| Goal | Command or setting | Result | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visible area only | Capture screenshot | Current viewport as PNG | Bug reports, hero sections, quick references |
| Entire document | Capture a full size screenshot | Full page, including below-the-fold content | Design review, archiving, long articles |
| Responsive layout | Device Mode plus either command | Viewport-sized or full-page PNG at the selected dimensions | Mobile and breakpoint checks |
| Framed device image | Show device frame, then capture | Screenshot with Chrome’s device frame | Presentations and mockups |
Prepare the page before capturing
What Chrome captures is whatever has loaded and is visible to the page at that moment. For a reliable result:
- Wait for fonts, images, charts, and animations to finish loading. Pause an animation or video if a stable frame matters.
- Dismiss cookie dialogs, newsletter forms, chat bubbles, and other overlays that obscure the content. If the overlay is part of the bug, leave it in place and note that in the filename or report.
- Scroll through a long page once when images are loaded only on scroll. Then return to the top and run Capture a full size screenshot.
- Check the page at the intended zoom and width. Browser zoom changes the apparent layout, while Device Mode changes the emulated viewport.
- For sensitive pages, remember that the PNG may contain account names, tokens displayed in the UI, personal data, or private URLs. Store and share it as you would any other confidential document.
Very long pages can create unusually tall PNG files. If an image viewer or issue tracker rejects the file, capture a viewport, divide the page into logical sections, or export a PDF through a separate print workflow instead of weakening the evidence with a compressed, unreadable image.
Automate screenshots with Headless Chrome
For recurring jobs, a command-line capture avoids manually opening DevTools. Headless Chrome’s documented form is:
chrome --headless --disable-gpu --screenshot https://example.com/
Chrome writes screenshot.png to the current working directory. Set an explicit viewport when layout dimensions matter:

chrome --headless --disable-gpu --screenshot --window-size=1280,1696 https://example.com/
The URL belongs at the end of the command. The width and height are in CSS pixels, so changing them can trigger different responsive breakpoints and alter the resulting page. Run the command from the folder where you want the output, or move the resulting screenshot.png into your build’s artifact directory afterward.
When command-line capture is the right choice
- Repeatability: the same URL and viewport can be captured in a scheduled job or documentation build.
- Consistency: a fixed window size makes visual comparisons easier than ad-hoc desktop windows.
- Batch work: a script can invoke the command for a list of URLs and rename each resulting file.
Automation limitations to plan for
The one-line command does not describe a wait-for-selector rule, cookie acceptance, login flow, custom request headers, or a network-idle condition. Pages that render content after JavaScript, require authentication, show a consent wall, or challenge automated browsers may therefore produce an incomplete or blocked image. Add the page’s own test setup or use a capture service when those controls are part of the requirement.
Take a screenshot on Android Chrome
Chrome for Android does not expose the desktop DevTools screenshot menu. Use Android’s native capture controls instead:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the page in Chrome and position it at the screen you want to capture.
- Press Power and Volume Down together. If that shortcut is unavailable, hold the Power button and tap Screenshot.
- For a page that supports scrolling, choose Take a scrolling screenshot when Android offers it, then extend the selection and save.
Google documents scrolling screenshots for Android 12 and later on most screens that support scrolling. Availability depends on the Android version, phone manufacturer, and whether that particular screen exposes a scrollable surface. If the scrolling option is missing, use the handset maker’s instructions or capture several sections.
Should you use a Chrome extension?
An extension can be convenient when you want a toolbar button, annotations, or an export workflow. The Chrome Web Store lists GoFullPage – Full Page Screen Capture as an option for one-click full-page capture and describes ongoing feature and fix updates. Check its current listing, permissions, and supported export formats before installing; built-in DevTools remains the dependency-light choice for a basic PNG.

Prefer the native workflow when the page contains confidential information, your organization restricts extensions, or you need to explain exactly how a capture was produced. Prefer an extension when repeated manual DevTools steps are slowing a nontechnical team and the extension’s permissions are acceptable.
Troubleshoot blank, incomplete, or wrong-size captures
The result shows a cookie banner, popup, or chat widget
That element was present when Chrome rendered the page. Close it before capturing, or treat its presence as the subject of the screenshot. For a repeatable clean capture, use a workflow that can accept consent and hide overlays before rendering.
Images or cards are missing on a full-page capture
Many sites lazy-load media only after it enters the viewport. Scroll through the page once, wait for each section to load, return to the top, and run the full-size command again. If the site requires a user action, sign-in, or an API response that is not available to the page, Chrome cannot invent that content.
The screenshot is cut off or uses the wrong responsive layout
Check whether you used Capture screenshot instead of Capture a full size screenshot. In Device Mode, verify the selected width, height, orientation, zoom, and device-pixel setting. A changed width can activate a different CSS breakpoint.
The page is blank or replaced by a bot check
Some sites serve a challenge or an empty shell to automated or unusual browser sessions. Try the capture while signed in through a normal Chrome window, wait for the page to finish loading, and confirm that the URL itself is reachable. Do not attempt to bypass a CAPTCHA or access control; obtain permission or use the site’s supported access method.

Headless Chrome cannot find the command or output file
Run the command from a folder where you can write files and confirm that the Chrome executable is available under the name you invoked. The documented command saves screenshot.png in the current working directory, so look there rather than in the browser’s Downloads folder.
The PNG is too large to upload
Capture only the viewport, use a narrower documented viewport, or split a very long page into sections. Resize a copy for sharing while retaining the original PNG for evidence.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so a script or an AI agent can capture a URL without opening Chrome DevTools. The API documentation is at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/.
One-call examples
cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to capture. Keep the access key out of source control and server-rendered HTML.
Why this differs from a plain headless command
- Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Every response reports the page verdict and billing result in
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders. - An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - You can request full-page output with lazy images loaded, one element by CSS selector, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, landscape mode and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, and blocking for ads, trackers, requests, or resource types.
- Advanced requests can supply headers, cookies, a user agent, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, a transparent background, image resizing, a cache TTL, signed links for public
<img>tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, or up to 100 URLs per bulk call. A usage API and OpenAPI specification are included, and parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier switching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Chrome save a full-page screenshot as JPEG or WebP?
The built-in DevTools commands described here generate a PNG. Convert a copy afterward if another format is required, or request PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF directly from ScreenshotNeo.
Will a screenshot include content hidden behind a click or accordion?
Only content rendered in the page state at capture time is included. Expand accordions or trigger the required interaction first; otherwise the hidden state is what Chrome records.
Can I add arrows or annotations during Chrome’s built-in capture?
DevTools saves the image but does not provide an annotation editor in this workflow. Annotate the saved PNG in an image editor or choose an extension whose current listing includes annotation tools.
Is a mobile-emulated screenshot the same as a screenshot from an Android phone?
No. Device Mode changes Chrome’s emulated viewport and responsive conditions on desktop. Android’s native capture also reflects the phone’s operating system, manufacturer UI, and hardware-specific scrolling behavior.
