They do different jobs: Beautiful Soup does not render the page or fetch flight results by itself. This is an educational workflow, not a guarantee that automated access is permitted, stable, or suitable for production. Review Google’s current terms and machine-readable instructions before accessing the site, and do not bypass blocks or other protections.
What Selenium and Beautiful Soup each do
Selenium WebDriver opens and controls a browser, including navigating, interacting with controls, and waiting for page state. Its documentation describes WebDriver as driving a browser natively, as a user would. Selenium WebDriver documentation explains the browser-control model.
Beautiful Soup parses HTML or XML that your code already has. It builds a navigable tree for finding text and elements; it does not run JavaScript or operate a browser. See the Beautiful Soup documentation.
- Use Selenium when the content requires browser rendering or interaction.
- Use Beautiful Soup when you have markup and want to inspect or extract from it.
- For static markup from an authorized source, a browser may be unnecessary. For an interactive page, a browser can provide rendered markup, but that does not make the page’s structure or access policy stable.
Check access rules before automating
Google’s Terms of Service prohibit bypassing protective measures and describe automated access that violates machine-readable instructions on Google pages, such as robots.txt. Check the current terms and applicable page instructions for your use. This article cannot determine whether a particular use is lawful in every jurisdiction.

Google’s public Flights partner material is for airline and online travel agency onboarding and describes an invite-only integration proposal; it does not document a general-purpose public API for any developer. See Google Flights partner information. If you need dependable structured flight data for a product, investigate currently authorized partner or licensed data sources rather than assuming browser scraping is an approved interface.
Install the Python dependencies
The example below is a starting point for a permitted test or research use. Selenium’s Python API documentation currently reports version 4.49.0 as its latest release; versions and installation guidance can change, so consult the Selenium Python API documentation when setting up your environment. Selenium Manager handles driver setup for most supported browsers and platforms, so a separate driver download is often unnecessary.
- Install a current supported Python version and a browser supported by your Selenium installation.
- Create and activate a virtual environment, then install the packages:
python -m venv .venv # macOS or Linux: source .venv/bin/activate # Windows PowerShell: # .venvScriptsActivate.ps1 python -m pip install --upgrade selenium beautifulsoup4 - Confirm the browser is installed and can open normally under the same user account that will run the script.
These commands install the latest versions available from the package index at run time, not a pinned or independently tested combination. For reproducible work, pin versions after validating them in your own environment.

Load a page, wait, and capture its markup
The following example demonstrates the library boundary without claiming a Google Flights selector will work. It opens a page, waits for the document body, obtains the browser’s current HTML, parses it with an explicit parser, prints basic diagnostics, and closes the session even if an error occurs. Replace the sample search URL with a URL you are permitted to access. A visible body is not proof that flight results have finished rendering.
from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
url = "https://www.google.com/travel/flights"
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get(url)
WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
lambda browser: browser.execute_script(
"return document.readyState"
) == "complete"
)
# Inspect only markup that is present in the browser DOM at this point.
html = driver.page_source
soup = BeautifulSoup(html, "html.parser")
print("Page title:", soup.title.get_text(" ", strip=True) if soup.title else "(missing)")
print("Document length:", len(html))
finally:
driver.quit()
For a real permitted workflow, navigate to the search page yourself or construct its URL from the controls and parameters available to you. Do not assume a particular query URL, result selector, or page state remains valid. After the page loads, inspect the rendered page and identify a meaningful readiness condition for the specific content you need. An explicit wait for that condition is generally more robust than sleeping a fixed number of seconds, but the correct condition depends on the page and must be verified.
Inspect and parse only fields you can validate
There is no verified, stable Google Flights DOM selector supplied here. Avoid copying a selector from an old snippet and treating it as an API. First inspect the current markup in your permitted session and determine which element corresponds to the result you want. Beautiful Soup can then locate that markup, for example:
# Example only: replace the selector and attribute after inspecting your markup.
result = soup.select_one("YOUR_VERIFIED_SELECTOR")
if result is None:
print("Expected element was not found; inspect the current page state and markup.")
else:
print(result.get_text(" ", strip=True))
Use a selector tied to a semantic attribute or structure only if the current markup actually provides it. CSS classes and nesting are implementation details and may change. Beautiful Soup also notes that different parsers can build different trees, especially for malformed markup; the example selects Python’s built-in html.parser explicitly. If parsing behavior matters, compare the parser output with the browser’s DOM rather than assuming every parser produces an identical tree.
Validate the extracted itinerary
Do not treat a non-empty string as a correct result. Check each record against what the browser visibly shows and preserve missing or ambiguous values rather than filling them by inference.

- Confirm origin and destination airport codes, including airport changes between legs.
- Keep outbound and return legs distinct; verify stop counts and connections.
- Record displayed departure and arrival times with their relevant local time zones if available.
- Validate the price against the displayed itinerary and note that a price string alone does not establish fare conditions, baggage, changeability, or final checkout cost.
- Detect missing values and unexpected text explicitly, and discard or flag records that fail validation.
Google explains that its default Best Flights ordering takes account of price, duration, time of day, and other factors; the first displayed option is not necessarily the cheapest. Its description of best departing flights also frames the ordering as a trade-off involving convenience, duration, stops, and airport changes. See How Google Flights finds the best flights. If your task is price comparison, identify the actual price field and sort validated records by that value instead of assuming screen position represents price rank.
Plan for changing markup and browser state
A browser automation script has more moving parts than a direct parser: browser startup, page navigation, rendering, waits, and element extraction. Browser sessions also consume more runtime and system resources than parsing a saved HTML document. No sourced benchmark establishes a speed or reliability figure for this particular Google Flights workflow.
Markup, content timing, and selectors can change. Treat a missing expected element as a normal failure case: capture enough diagnostics to understand the state, stop rather than emitting guessed data, and re-inspect before updating the parser. Do not respond to a block, CAPTCHA, or other protective measure by attempting to evade it.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Browser or driver fails to start: Confirm the browser is installed and supported by the Selenium version, update Selenium, and review the exception for startup or permission details. Selenium Manager configures drivers for most supported combinations, but that is not a promise that every platform or environment is supported.
- The script returns a title but no flight data: The document may not yet contain the content you expect, or the page state may differ from your assumption. Inspect the visible browser page and current markup; wait for a meaningful, verified condition rather than adding an arbitrary delay.
- A selector returns
Noneor no matches: The selector may not match the current markup, or the content may not have loaded. Re-inspect the live DOM, verify that you are parsing the right document, and fail clearly instead of silently creating empty records. - Parsed structure differs from browser inspection: Check which HTML string was captured and which parser Beautiful Soup used. Malformed markup can be handled differently by different parsers; select one explicitly and validate its tree.
- Values are present but inconsistent: The selected text may combine multiple itinerary fields or omit context. Compare extracted values with the rendered page, keep legs and times separate, and reject records that do not pass field-level checks.
- The page blocks access or presents a CAPTCHA: Stop the automated access. Review the current terms and page instructions; do not bypass protections or attempt fingerprint or rate-limit evasion.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture a page as an image or PDF rather than extract structured flight fields, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It will not turn a screenshot into validated flight records. For a permitted page capture, its API accepts a URL in one GET request:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/travel/flights -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the API details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Beautiful Soup scrape dynamic flight results on its own?
No. It parses markup that has already been obtained; browser rendering and interaction are Selenium’s role in this workflow.
Does Google provide a public Google Flights API for any developer?
The public partner information described here is invite-only and does not establish a general-purpose public API. Check current authorized options directly with Google or licensed providers.
Is the first Google Flights result the cheapest?
Not necessarily. Google says Best Flights ordering weighs multiple factors, including price and convenience.
