To capture an entire WordPress page, open its front-end preview in a new browser tab and use the browser’s full-page screenshot command. In Chrome, open DevTools Device Mode and choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot. In Firefox, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page in Developer Tools and click its screenshot button. WordPress’s own View menu previews desktop, tablet, and mobile layouts; it does not export a full-page image.
First decide what you are documenting. A front-end capture shows the rendered website visitors see. An editor capture shows the Block Editor or Site Editor interface. The steps below cover both goals without confusing the editor canvas with the published design.
Open the rendered WordPress page first
In the Block Editor, select View > Preview in new tab. The preview opens the current post or page in a separate browser tab, where the browser can render the complete document. In the Site Editor, choose View site to open the site front end.
The View menu also offers desktop, tablet, and mobile previews and lets you resize the editor canvas between presets. WordPress documentation updated this feature for WordPress 7.1 on August 19, 2026. Those controls change the preview width; they are not a documented full-page screenshot exporter.

Capture the editor instead
If your goal is to document a setting, block arrangement, or editorial workflow, leave the page in the WordPress admin and capture that tab. For a screenshot of the website itself, always switch to the front-end preview before using the browser command. For tutorial images, keep enough surrounding interface context that a reader can find the control, then use a closer crop only when text would otherwise be unreadable.
Chrome: capture a full-size page with DevTools
- Open the published page or the WordPress preview in a Chrome tab.
- Open Chrome DevTools, then turn on Device Mode. Device Mode is useful when you need a mobile-sized or tablet-sized rendering.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Open the downloaded image and check the bottom of the page, lazy-loaded images, and any sections that use their own scrollbars.
Chrome’s documentation describes this command as capturing the whole page, including content that is not visible in the viewport. A Device Mode capture is a simulated viewport and page rendering; it is not evidence of how the page behaves on a particular physical handset.
Choose the right Chrome viewport
For a desktop article, use a desktop viewport and verify that the page has finished loading before capture. For a responsive check, select a mobile or tablet preset in Device Mode and repeat the full-size capture. Save each file with the viewport in its name, such as home-desktop-full.png and home-mobile-full.png, so the images cannot be confused later.
Firefox: use the built-in entire-page screenshot
- Open the WordPress page or preview in Firefox.
- Open Developer Tools and its settings panel.
- Find Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the new screenshot icon in the Developer Tools toolbar. Firefox saves the file in your Downloads folder.
Firefox also documents a Web Console helper. Run :screenshot --fullpage to capture the complete page. The helper supports additional options such as a delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, and CSS selector. Give each capture a distinct filename: using the same filename repeatedly can overwrite an earlier image.
When Firefox output is easier to manage
The console command is useful when a page needs a short delay for fonts or late content, when you need a higher device-pixel ratio, or when you want to target a particular CSS selector. Inspect the resulting file rather than assuming that a selector or delay worked; a misspelled selector or a page that never finishes loading can produce an incomplete image.

Capturing WordPress pages on a mobile screen
On a phone, the most predictable workflow is to open the page on a desktop browser, enable Chrome Device Mode (or use WordPress’s mobile preview), and capture the simulated mobile viewport. This gives you a reproducible image at a known width. It does not replace testing on an actual handset: device-specific browser UI, hardware performance, and touch behavior are outside a simulated screenshot.
If you need a picture of the WordPress admin on a phone, open the admin page in the phone browser and use the handset’s normal screenshot shortcut. That produces a viewport image, not automatically a full document. For a complete mobile page, use a desktop browser’s full-size command with the desired mobile viewport and verify the output.
Optional extensions for repeated captures
A browser extension can make repeated captures more convenient, but it is not required. The Chrome Web Store listing for GoFullPage says it captures the whole current page and downloads an image or PDF; its listing changelog shows version 8.9 dated September 24, 2026. Browser-native Chrome and Firefox methods avoid installing another tool. The extension’s behavior on every WordPress theme, plugin, and embedded document has not been independently established here, so inspect each export.
The FullPage Capture vendor help page says its extension can handle inner scrolling panels and embedded frames and splits captures that exceed Chrome canvas limits. It reports a maximum of 28,800 pixels per side, or about 259 million pixels of area, before splitting into numbered parts. Those limits and features apply to that vendor’s extension, not to every screenshot method.
Troubleshoot incomplete or unreadable captures
Lazy-loaded images or sections are missing
Let the page finish loading. If images or sections appear only after scrolling, scroll through the page once before capturing so the browser has a chance to request them. Reopen the preview and capture again if the first file still has blank areas. Always inspect the lower half of a long page instead of trusting the download notification.

An inner panel is cut off
A full-page command normally captures the outer document. A page-builder preview, code sample, dashboard, or other element with its own scrollbar may remain clipped because its content is inside an inner scroller. Some extensions offer inner-scroller capture; the FullPage Capture documentation describes that capability for its own product. Otherwise, capture the panel separately or temporarily expand it in the page being documented.
An embedded frame is incomplete
Content inside an embedded frame can have a separate document and scrolling context. Check the frame in the exported image. If it is cut off, capture the framed page directly when you have its URL, or use a tool that explicitly supports frame capture. Do not assume that an outer-page screenshot contains every pixel of a cross-origin embed.

The page is too tall or the image is split
Very long pages can exceed a browser or extension canvas limit. The result may be split into numbered images, contain repeated sections, or stop before the footer. Decide whether a sequence of images or a PDF is more useful, then check for missing and duplicated content. The vendor-specific 28,800-pixel-per-side and approximately 259-million-pixel figures above are guidance for FullPage Capture, not a universal browser limit.
Text is too small to read
Capture at a sensible viewport width and device-pixel ratio rather than shrinking the browser until the entire page appears on screen. For documentation, preserve the surrounding interface in one image and add a closer capture of the setting or control. A full-page image is useful only if readers can read the important text.
A consent banner, popup, or chat widget covers the page
Dismiss the banner or popup in the preview before capturing. If the page is your own site, temporarily disable the overlay in the page configuration or theme while creating the documentation image, then restore the production setting. Confirm that the result still represents what visitors should see.
Which method should you use?
Choose the method that matches your browser, output, and page structure. No comparative hands-on test establishes that one browser is universally better.

| ScreenshotNeo API (#1 for automated screenshot services) | One HTTP request or MCP tool | Repeatable captures, CI jobs, bulk URLs, clean output | Requires an API key; it captures a URL rather than your local unsaved editor canvas |
| Chrome DevTools | Built in; Device Mode and More options | One-off desktop or simulated mobile captures | Inner scrollers, frames, lazy content, and very tall pages still need checking |
| Firefox Developer Tools | Enable one toolbox button, or use :screenshot --fullpage |
Firefox users who want delay, selector, filename, or pixel-ratio options | Repeated filenames can overwrite prior files; embedded content may remain separate |
| Browser extension | Install and grant extension access | Frequent image/PDF captures and special scrolling cases | Behavior and canvas limits vary by extension; verify every export |
| WordPress screenshot plugin | Install a plugin and configure an external API account | Automatically embedding screenshots or PDFs in posts | Different workflow from manually capturing the page open in your browser |
Automated screenshots inside WordPress are a different job
The WordPress.org directory lists Capture – Screenshots & PDF. It uses shortcodes and an external Capture API to generate screenshots or PDFs for display or download in posts and pages; its documented example includes full=true. An API account is required. When a shortcode is processed, the service receives the target website URL, screenshot or PDF parameters, and API credentials. Use this route when you want generated assets embedded in content, not for a one-off image of the page currently open in your browser.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the #1 choice for an automated screenshot API because it removes common page clutter before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots. Its GET endpoint returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output:
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and authentication.

r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/your-wordpress-page"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/your-wordpress-page' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status} ${res.statusText}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
Replace the example URL with the public WordPress page or preview URL you need to capture. ScreenshotNeo can load lazy images for full-page captures, capture one CSS-selected element, set dark mode, use 12 device presets or any viewport, apply retina scale, and return PDFs with paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges. You can also supply custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element before capture, hide selectors, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, and block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types.
For controlled environments it accepts custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation. Other options include transparent backgrounds, image resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.
Best Value
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Every response identifies the page result and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
