If you do not have access, Google’s documented method is to export a chart as CSV and analyze it in a spreadsheet. For advertising keyword ideas, historical metrics, or forecasts, use Google Ads Keyword Planning instead—but label those results as Ads data, not Trends data.
Choose the workflow that matches your data
Google Trends reports relative search interest. Its values are indexed and scaled for comparison; they are not absolute search counts. Your first decision is therefore whether you need Trends interest, advertising metrics, or a small one-off export.
| Route | Output | Limitation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trends website to CSV | Chart data for a selected term, geography and time range | Manual export; not a documented bulk automation interface | Occasional or modest analyses |
| Google Trends API alpha | Consistently scaled Trends data, time aggregation and geography | Restricted early access; alpha behavior is still being developed | Admitted teams building repeatable monitoring |
| Google Ads Keyword Planning | Keyword ideas, historical Ads metrics and forecasts | Different data source, access levels and rate limits | Campaign and advertising research |
What the official Trends API alpha provides
Google announced the API alpha on July 24, 2025, and its current documentation still asks developers to apply for early access. An application is not a guarantee of admission, and the alpha should not be described as a generally available production API.
Consistent scaling for comparisons
The website scales each request independently from 0 to 100. That makes separate requests difficult to compare directly. Google says the alpha returns consistently scaled data that can be joined and compared across requests. The values still represent search interest, not the number of searches.
#1 Best Overall
Time and geography
The documented alpha scope includes a rolling window of the last 1,800 days (about five years), with daily, weekly, monthly and yearly aggregation. It also supports countries and sub-regions. The current documentation says the API makes comparisons across dozens of terms easier, while the website interface permits eight terms in one comparison. “Dozens” is Google’s description, not a published numeric ceiling.
Access and operational caveats
- Apply through Google’s current Google Trends API Alpha page and wait for an eligibility decision.
- Read the alpha documentation for the endpoint, authentication and quotas supplied to your account; do not assume that examples for an unreleased or private interface will remain stable.
- Keep a record of the requested terms, category, search type, geography, interval and retrieval date so later runs remain comparable.
- Expect development changes and provide feedback if Google requests it; alpha access is not a service-level or production-readiness commitment.
Fallback: export Trends charts as CSV
When alpha access is unavailable, Google’s official help says: “To analyze Trends data further, you can export charts as CSV files.” This is the supported, low-complexity path for small collections of terms.
- Open Google Trends and enter a term or topic.
- Set the search type, category, geography and time range.
- Add comparison terms if needed. The interface allows up to eight terms in one comparison.
- Scroll to the chart you need and select its download/export control.
- Open the CSV in Google Sheets, Excel or another spreadsheet application.
- Preserve the original file, then create analysis columns rather than overwriting Google’s values.
Spreadsheet checks that prevent misleading conclusions
- Keep each chart’s settings beside the data. A five-year worldwide Web Search chart is not directly interchangeable with a 90-day YouTube Search chart for one country.
- Use the index as a relative signal. A value of 100 is the highest interest in that selected series, not 100 searches.
- Mark “Breakout” or very low-volume labels as Google’s output rather than converting them into invented counts.
- Attribute the source as Google Trends and review Google’s Terms of Service before redistributing the data.
A small Python CSV workflow
The following script works on an exported Trends CSV after you remove the chart’s explanatory header rows and save the table as trends.csv. It calculates each term’s mean and peak index without pretending those values are search volume.
import csv
from statistics import mean
with open("trends.csv", newline="", encoding="utf-8-sig") as f:
rows = list(csv.DictReader(f))
columns = [c for c in rows[0] if c not in ("Week", "Month", "Day", "Date")]
for column in columns:
values = []
for row in rows:
raw = row[column].strip()
if raw.isdigit():
values.append(int(raw))
if values:
print(f"{column}: mean index={mean(values):.2f}, peak index={max(values)}")
CSV column names and date labels can vary by chart, so inspect the header before running the script. This is analysis of an export, not an unofficial replacement for the alpha API.

Once Google enables your project, build a repeatable job around the exact API schema and credentials shown in your account’s alpha documentation. A robust extraction record should include:
- Term or topic identifier and any comparison group.
- Search type and category.
- Country or sub-region.
- Start and end dates, including the retrieval timestamp.
- Requested aggregation (daily, weekly, monthly or yearly).
- Raw response, API version and an application-level job identifier.
Design for comparable batches
Use the same settings for every batch and store the API’s consistently scaled values unchanged. If you need to compare a new term with an old series, request them in a comparable batch where possible rather than rescaling values yourself. Cache successful responses and retry transient failures with exponential backoff; do not hammer an alpha service with parallel requests until your quota and rate limits are documented.
Do not infer absolute demand
A rising index can mean greater relative interest within the selected geography and period. It does not tell you how many people searched, whether the same people searched repeatedly, or whether a term will convert. Use other validated data for volume, audience size and business forecasts.
When Google Ads Keyword Planning is the right tool
Google Ads Keyword Planning can generate keyword ideas, historical metrics and forecasts for advertising work. Google explicitly says Google Trends is a different data source from Google Ads. Do not merge the datasets into one column called “search volume.” Label every export or database field as Trends interest or Ads metric.

Google documents Test, Explorer, Basic and Standard Ads API access levels. Explorer access excludes several Planning services; Basic access has a daily operation limit; Standard requires an application. Keyword Planning is rate limited, and Google recommends caching because responses for an existing-keyword query generally do not change over hours or days while historical metrics refresh monthly. Confirm the current permissions for your account before designing a production pipeline.
A practical split
- Use Trends to compare attention over time, geography and search type.
- Use Ads Keyword Planning for campaign ideas, historical Ads metrics and forecasts.
- Join the outputs only in a clearly documented analysis layer, retaining each source and its definitions.
Reliability, scale and cost considerations
Small projects
CSV export has almost no engineering overhead and is usually the fastest answer for a handful of charts. Its cost is analyst time and the risk of inconsistent settings between files.
Rank #3
Recurring monitoring
The alpha can reduce manual work and makes cross-request comparisons more defensible, but eligibility is the gating factor. Schedule jobs at a cadence appropriate to your question, retain raw responses, and alert on missing periods or schema changes.
Large keyword inventories
Do not assume that the website’s eight-term limit or the alpha’s “dozens” wording constitutes a bulk keyword-list guarantee. Partition requests only within the limits documented for your admitted project, and record which terms were grouped together.

Troubleshooting common failures
“There is no API key or endpoint I can use”
The public Trends website is not the same as a generally open API. Apply for the official alpha. Until admitted, use chart CSV exports.
Separate files produce incompatible numbers
The website rescales each request from 0 to 100. Re-run terms together in one comparison or use the alpha’s consistently scaled data if your account has access.
My spreadsheet shows numbers that look like search counts
They are index values. Rename columns to include “Trends index,” retain the selected period and geography, and never multiply them into invented volumes.
Ads results do not match Trends
That is expected: Google identifies them as different data sources. Keep separate fields, explanations and reporting labels.
Automation starts returning errors or throttling
Check the alpha or Ads documentation for your project’s current quota and access level, reduce concurrency, cache stable queries and retry only transient failures. Store the response body and request settings so a failed run can be diagnosed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Google Trends API generally available?
No. Google currently describes it as a limited-access alpha and invites applications for early access.
Best Value
Can CSV exports be used in published work?
Google documents chart export and asks publishers to attribute Google Trends; review the applicable Google Terms of Service before reuse.
What is the safest way to compare terms from different requests?
Use the same settings and request terms together, or use the alpha’s consistently scaled output when your project is admitted.
Should I call Ads Keyword Planning data Google Trends data?
No. Google states that Trends and Google Ads are different data sources.
The Bottom Line
Use CSV export for occasional work, apply for the restricted Trends API alpha when you need repeatable, consistently scaled comparisons, and reserve Google Ads Keyword Planning for advertising metrics and forecasts.
