To find a website’s XML sitemap, check https://example.com/robots.txt first and read every case-insensitive Sitemap: line. If none is listed, try common paths such as /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml, then validate the file as reachable, well-formed XML containing the right absolute URLs. For a sitemap index, inspect every child sitemap rather than stopping at the index.
What an XML sitemap does
An XML sitemap is a machine-readable file in which a site identifies important pages, videos, images or other files for search engines. Google describes it as a file that tells search engines “which pages and files you think are important in your site” and provides information about those files. A sitemap can also carry metadata such as a page’s last modification time and alternate-language versions.
A sitemap is a crawl-discovery aid, not a guarantee that a URL will be indexed. Search engines still evaluate accessibility, canonical signals, content quality and other rules. An HTML page containing links may help human navigation, but it is not a replacement for an XML sitemap.
How to find a sitemap from robots.txt
- Use the site’s real protocol and host. Start with
https://example.com/robots.txt. If the site normally uses HTTP, a different subdomain, or redirects between hosts, test the canonical version as well as the exact host you need to audit. - Read every directive. Search for
Sitemap:without relying on capitalization. The value should be a complete URL, and a site may publish several sitemap URLs or one sitemap index. Bing documents theSitemap:directive as a discovery method. - Open each URL directly. Do not assume the first line is the only file. Download or open every listed sitemap and determine whether it is a URL set or an index.
- Follow indexes. In an index, each
<sitemap>element contains a<loc>child pointing to another sitemap. Check each child individually.
Robots.txt is the best universal first check because it can declare one or many sitemap locations. It is also useful when a CMS chooses a filename that is not one of the familiar defaults.

Common sitemap URLs to try when robots.txt is silent
A site can choose any valid filename, so these are practical guesses rather than a standard that every site must follow:
https://example.com/sitemap.xmlhttps://example.com/sitemap_index.xmlhttps://example.com/sitemap-index.xml
Also check the CMS’s SEO or sitemap settings. WordPress, Wix and Blogger commonly make a sitemap available automatically, according to Google’s documentation. Platforms may generate separate files for posts, pages, products, images or languages and expose a sitemap index as the public entry point.
Check alternate hosts and deployment routes
A sitemap may live on a subdomain or a separate static host. Confirm which host the site actually serves, whether the URL redirects, and whether the sitemap is intended for that site’s search property. A file on an unrelated host can create scope and verification problems even when its XML is valid.

View the source or download the response if a browser renders XML as a collapsible tree. The root element is more reliable than the filename.
Validate an XML sitemap step by step
1. Confirm reachability and response content
- Request the exact HTTP or HTTPS URL and record the status code.
- Make sure the response is the sitemap, not a branded 404 page, login screen, consent wall or proxy error.
- Resolve redirects and use the final canonical URL in your documentation and submission.
- Check that DNS and TLS work for the crawler as well as for your browser.
2. Confirm well-formed XML
A valid file must parse as XML with one root element. A URL set normally uses <urlset> and <url><loc>; an index uses <sitemapindex> and <sitemap><loc>. Malformed entities, an unclosed tag, an encoding declaration that does not match the bytes, or HTML inserted before the XML declaration can make a crawler reject the file.

3. Check every <loc>
- Each location should be an absolute URL, not a relative path.
- Keep URLs within the intended protocol, host and site scope.
- Remove obvious 404, redirect-loop, blocked or error URLs before submission.
- Confirm that canonical URLs, rather than tracking variants or duplicate parameters, are listed.
4. Treat <lastmod> as evidence, not decoration
Use <lastmod> only when it reflects a real modification date from the source system. Rewriting every date on every generation makes the metadata less useful and can create needless recrawl signals. A date does not prove that a page changed or that a search engine will recrawl it immediately.
5. Check every child of an index
An index is only a directory. Load each child, apply the same reachability and XML checks, and verify that the child’s URLs belong to the correct site. One broken child can hide a substantial section of a site even when the index itself parses correctly.
6. Check size limits
Keep each sitemap at or below 50 MB or 50,000 URLs, whichever comes first, following current Search.gov guidance. Split larger collections by content type, language or section and publish a sitemap index that lists the parts.

Bing accepts XML, RSS 2.0, Atom 0.3/1.0 and plain text. XML is generally the most versatile choice when you control the generator.
Submit and monitor a sitemap
Google Search Console
If you own the site, submit the sitemap URL in the Sitemaps report in Google Search Console. That route requires owner permissions for the relevant property. Use the exact protocol and host represented by the property, and inspect processing messages after submission.

Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools accepts submitted sitemaps and reports processing status, errors and discovered URL counts. Those diagnostics can reveal a broken child sitemap or URLs outside the expected scope.
Robots.txt discovery without a console account
If you cannot use a search-console account, publish a full Sitemap: URL in robots.txt. Crawlers can discover it while fetching the site’s crawl rules. This does not provide the same reporting interface as a webmaster console.

Inspect robots.txt with cURL
curl -L --max-redirs 5 https://example.com/robots.txtRead every Sitemap: line in the response, then request each URL. The -L option follows normal redirects; investigate unexpected redirects rather than hiding them.
Check status and content type
