To save a webpage that is open on your Mac as a PDF, choose File > Print in your browser, then choose Save as PDF from the PDF menu. This built-in Mac workflow is usually the simplest way to turn a rendered webpage into a PDF; it does not require uploading the page to an online converter. If you have a local HTML file or need control over capturing multiple pages, Acrobat desktop offers a more configurable route.
Choose the right way to convert HTML to PDF
“HTML to PDF” can mean several different things. The right method depends on what you have and what you want the PDF to contain:
- A webpage open in a browser: use the Mac print dialog and save its rendered output as a PDF.
- A local .html file: open it in a browser and print to PDF, or use Acrobat desktop to select the file directly.
- A multi-page website: Acrobat desktop can capture a URL with additional scope and page-level settings.
- The HTML source itself: save or view the source; that is not the same as making a PDF of the page as it appears in a browser.
A PDF preserves a paginated rendering, not a live webpage: links may remain clickable, but interactive elements, animations, and changing content should not be expected to behave as they do online. For an ordinary single page, start with the built-in method below.
Save an open webpage as a PDF on Mac
- Open the webpage in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or another browser.
- Choose File > Print. If the browser offers a print preview, wait for it to finish rendering.
- In the macOS print window, click the PDF button or open its menu, then choose Save as PDF.
- Enter a filename, choose where to save the file, and confirm.
- Open the saved PDF in Preview and check the page breaks, images, and edges of wide content before sharing it.

If you only need part of the page
Use the browser’s print preview to look for page-range or layout controls, if available, and inspect the result before sending it. The print workflow captures the page as rendered for printing; it is not a guaranteed way to select a particular DOM element or reproduce every on-screen design detail.
Save a local HTML file
For a simple local file, open the .html file in a browser and follow the same print-to-PDF steps. The browser must be able to load any related images, stylesheets, fonts, or scripts for them to appear. If those assets are referenced by remote URLs, the file may need an internet connection; if they are missing or blocked, the PDF can look different from the intended page.
HTML source, Safari Web Archive, and PDF are different
A PDF is intended to preserve a rendered, paginated document. Saving a page’s source preserves its HTML code rather than its visual layout. Safari’s Web Archive option is another distinct format that can save a webpage with its graphics. Use PDF when you need a document to read, print, or share consistently. Use source when you need the markup. Use a Web Archive when you specifically want Safari’s bundled webpage format and can work with that format later.

Convert a URL or local HTML file with Acrobat desktop
Acrobat desktop is useful when a single print-to-PDF pass is too limited—for example, when you need to start from a URL or local HTML file, capture multiple levels of a site, or adjust conversion settings. Adobe documents a workflow that accepts either a webpage address or a browsed-to HTML file, with options to set the capture scope and create the PDF. Exact controls can vary by Acrobat version. - Open Acrobat desktop and choose its web-page-to-PDF creation workflow.
- Enter the webpage URL or browse to the local HTML file.
- If capturing a site rather than one page, set the number of levels and any scope restrictions carefully so you do not collect unrelated pages.
- Adjust conversion settings relevant to the document, such as page size, orientation, scaling, images, backgrounds, language, or encoding.
- Create the PDF, then inspect the resulting pages and links.
Adobe’s documented settings include options for images and backgrounds, page dimensions and orientation, fitting wide content, language and encoding, PDF tags, and bookmarks. These controls can help when a basic printout cuts off a wide table, drops a background, or breaks the page awkwardly. The options available may depend on the input and Acrobat version. When a browser extension may be convenient
Adobe also documents a browser-toolbar conversion route. Its consumer guide gives Mac steps using Firefox, so treat that as Adobe’s documented route rather than assuming every browser, extension, or setup works the same way: Adobe’s guide to converting websites to PDFs.
Use an online converter only when its trade-offs fit
An online service can be convenient when you want a browser-based workflow, but the page or file may be uploaded to the provider. Adobe says its Acrobat online services upload files to Adobe cloud storage. Its FAQ says files are private by default and describes deletion within a short time if the user does not sign in. The same FAQ states that most tools allow one free transaction and one download without signing in; that is a service-wide description, not a confirmed entitlement or price for a particular HTML-to-PDF conversion. Check the current conversion page and terms rather than assuming that allowance applies to your exact task. Details are in Adobe’s Acrobat online services FAQ.
For sensitive or confidential pages, prefer a workflow whose data handling is acceptable to you. The built-in Mac print flow avoids sending the content to an online converter, while Adobe specifically says its online service uploads files to cloud storage. Do not upload material unless you are comfortable with the applicable service terms.

Adobe lists Mac OS 11.7.10 or later with Safari 15.2 or later, Firefox, or Chrome among supported desktop configurations for its online services. That is Adobe’s compatibility statement for that service, and it can change; it is not a minimum-version requirement for Apple’s native print-to-PDF instructions.
Fix cut-off pages, missing backgrounds, and odd page breaks
A browser page is often designed as a continuous, scrollable layout, while a PDF is split into pages. Adobe notes that a webpage can become multiple standard-size PDF pages, so the PDF’s page boundaries may not match the screen view. Preview the actual file rather than judging it from the browser. Adobe discusses pagination and PDF structure in its guidance on PDFs converted from web pages, last updated February 26, 2026.
- Wide tables or content are clipped: try landscape orientation, a larger page size, or a fit-to-page/scaling option where available. Check that the text remains readable after scaling.
- Background colors or images are missing: check the print dialog for background graphics options. If using Acrobat desktop, review its image and background settings.
- Images are absent: wait for the page to finish loading, confirm that the images appear in the browser, and check whether a local file relies on unavailable external assets.
- Headings or paragraphs split poorly: adjust paper size, margins, orientation, or scaling if the selected workflow exposes those controls. Recreate and inspect the PDF after each meaningful change.
- Only some page content appears: the page may load content as you scroll, require interaction, or restrict saving. Scroll through the page and let it finish loading before printing; some sites may prevent saving items that appear on screen.

Check the finished PDF before sharing
- Confirm the file opens and has the expected page count.
- Check the first and last pages for missing sections or excess blank space.
- Review wide content, tables, and image placement at normal reading size.
- Test important hyperlinks if recipients need to follow them.
- Make sure you created the intended output: a rendered PDF, not an HTML source file or Safari Web Archive.
These checks matter because a successful conversion does not guarantee that every site renders well in print. If the result is poor, try a different page size, orientation, or conversion method rather than sharing an unreviewed file.
