Use a real browser, wait for the rendered state you need, then capture the viewport, full page, element, or clipped region. A browser is essential when JavaScript, responsive layouts, consent dialogs, authentication, or lazy-loaded content affects what a visitor sees. Playwright and Puppeteer provide the main building blocks; shot-scraper offers a command-line route built on Playwright. For a managed option, ScreenshotNeo can return a cleaned image or PDF from one request.
The automation workflow
A reliable screenshot scraper separates navigation from capture. The general sequence is:
- Launch a browser, normally headless in an unattended job.
- Create a page or browser context with an explicit viewport and device scale.
- Navigate to the target URL.
- Wait for a condition that proves the required content is rendered.
- Capture the viewport, complete scrollable page, element, or rectangle.
- Save the bytes or file together with the URL and capture time.
- Close the page/context, or reuse a controlled browser for the next URL.
A screenshot records rendered pixels, not structured fields. Extract text and values from the DOM or an permitted API when that is the actual scraping objective; use the image as visual evidence, an audit artifact, or a record of presentation.
Choose the capture scope first
| Requirement | Capture | Why |
|---|---|---|
| What is visible in a browser window | Viewport screenshot | Matches a defined width and height. |
| The entire scrollable document | Full-page screenshot | Includes content below the fold; it is not merely a taller viewport. |
| One card, chart, or article | Element screenshot | Excludes navigation, ads, and unrelated page changes. |
| A fixed rectangle | Clipped screenshot | Useful for a known region or consistent visual comparison. |
Element or clipped captures are generally easier to compare and cheaper to store than an entire page. Full-page images are appropriate for documentation and complete visual records, but they can include unstable advertisements, sticky headers, or very long lazy-loaded pages.
Playwright: viewport and full-page captures
Install Playwright in a Node.js project and install its browser binaries, then run this example. The explicit viewport prevents responsive breakpoints from changing between jobs.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
domcontentloaded only means the initial document has been parsed. A single-page application may still be fetching and rendering the data you need, so add a site-specific readiness check before taking the image.
Wait for a selector
await page.goto('https://example.com/products');
await page.locator('[data-testid="product-grid"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'products.png', fullPage: true });
Wait for an application condition
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard');
await page.waitForFunction(() => window.__REPORT_READY__ === true);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png' });
Prefer a semantic role or stable data attribute over a generated class name. If no reliable condition exists, a short, measured delay is a fallback rather than proof that the content is complete.
Capture an element or region
await page.locator('article').screenshot({ path: 'article.png' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'chart.png',
clip: { x: 120, y: 240, width: 900, height: 500 }
});
Playwright also supports masking selected elements, controlling animation handling, choosing an image format, and using a device scale. Disable or mask animated and personalized regions when repeatability matters.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
const heading = await page.$('h1');
if (heading) {
await heading.screenshot({ path: 'heading.png' });
}
await browser.close();
Puppeteer documents fullPage, clip, image type, quality, encoding, transparent-background behavior, and capture beyond the viewport. JPEG quality applies to JPEG output; PNG is lossless, while WebP can reduce size when your downstream system accepts it.
Wait for client-rendered data
await page.goto('https://example.com/results', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-loaded="true"]', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'results.png' });
networkidle2 is useful when requests genuinely finish, but analytics, polling, and long-lived connections can prevent an idle state. A selector or application event that represents the data you need is usually more deterministic.
Make captures repeatable
- Fix the viewport and scale. A breakpoint change can alter navigation, wrapping, and image dimensions.
- Control the browser context. Set the locale, timezone, cookies, authentication, and user agent deliberately when those values affect rendering.
- Stabilize motion. Disable animations where your framework permits it, or mask regions that continuously change.
- Handle lazy loading. Scroll through a long document or wait for images and content to appear before a full-page capture.
- Record provenance. Store the final URL, timestamp, viewport, browser version, and readiness condition next to the file.
- Respect access rules. Confirm that you are allowed to automate the site and avoid bypassing authentication, bot controls, or other technical restrictions.
Do not treat a screenshot as a substitute for permission to collect data. Jurisdiction-specific scraping requirements and a target site’s terms can differ; obtain appropriate authorization for your use case.
Command-line automation with shot-scraper
shot-scraper is a command-line screenshot tool built on Playwright. It is useful for shell jobs, scheduled documentation snapshots, and small repeatable tasks where maintaining a custom browser program is unnecessary. Use its installed command’s help and project documentation for the exact flags available in your version. The same principles still apply: set the viewport, wait for the page’s real readiness condition, and choose full-page, element, or clipped output deliberately.

Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
There is no universal speed winner
Playwright and Puppeteer document capabilities, not a universal throughput or reliability ranking. Results depend on browser engine, language runtime, target pages, image weight, authentication, and concurrency. Benchmark representative URLs with the same viewport and readiness rules you will use in production.
Reuse safely, isolate when necessary
Keeping one browser process open avoids repeated startup overhead. Use separate pages or contexts to isolate cookies and sessions, and limit concurrency so CPU, memory, and the target site are not overwhelmed. Add bounded navigation and selector timeouts; retry transient navigation failures with backoff, but do not blindly retry a deterministic selector failure.
Reduce work at the source
Capture an element or clip instead of a full document when possible. Block irrelevant resources only when doing so cannot change the visual state you need. A smaller image lowers storage and transfer cost, but an aggressively compressed image may be unsuitable for OCR or pixel comparison.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed.
The API supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicking before capture, hidden selectors, waits for selectors/delay/network idle, request and resource blocking, headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The screenshot is blank
Check the final URL, navigation errors, authentication, and whether the page needs JavaScript. Wait for a visible, content-specific selector rather than capturing immediately after navigation. For a canvas or delayed image, wait for the application event that signals completion.
Content is missing below the fold
Use fullPage: true or scroll to trigger lazy loading, then wait for the expected images or rows. Some virtualized lists never render every item simultaneously; capture the relevant element or extract the data separately.
The result changes between runs
Fix viewport, scale, locale, timezone, cookies, and user agent. Disable animations, hide timestamps or ads, and use stable selectors. A live page can legitimately change after each request, so save the capture time.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
Navigation or selector timeouts
Distinguish a slow page from a wrong selector. Increase a bounded timeout only after measuring; verify redirects and iframe boundaries; then retry transient network failures with backoff. If the selector is generated or personalized, replace it with a stable semantic or data attribute.
Bot checks or consent overlays interfere
Do not attempt to defeat a CAPTCHA or access control without authorization. For pages you are permitted to capture, handle consent in the browser context or use ScreenshotNeo’s consent cleanup and inspect its page-verdict and billing headers.

FAQ
Should I scrape the screenshot or the DOM?
Use the DOM or an allowed API for structured values. Use screenshots when visual appearance, layout, or an audit trail is the requirement.
Is a full-page screenshot the same as scrolling and stitching images?
It represents the full scrollable document as one capture, but sticky elements, lazy loading, and virtualized content can still require page-specific handling.
Which library should a new project choose?
Choose based on browser-engine coverage, language/runtime fit, existing test code, and the capture controls you need; the documented core screenshot operations overlap substantially.
