If Discord, Slack, or another chat app cannot show a preview for a page protected by Cloudflare, first find out which request Cloudflare blocked. If the platform’s fetcher is being denied, the simplest fix is usually a narrowly scoped exception for the verified bot and the needed URL path. If direct access must stay blocked, a carefully restricted server-side proxy can fetch public page metadata and return a sanitized response. A proxy is not a general-purpose way to bypass Cloudflare safely: it creates a new fetch surface that must be constrained and monitored.
Why Cloudflare can stop a link preview
Chat platforms create link previews by fetching the shared URL and reading its metadata. Discord says its bot visits a shared page to retrieve information such as its title, description, and image. Discord identifies its fetcher with a Discordbot user-agent and publishes IP ranges that can be used to verify the request source. A user-agent by itself is not proof: clients can spoof it.
That fetch can be interrupted by Cloudflare or by security controls at the origin. Cloudflare’s crawl-error guidance notes that crawler requests proxied through Cloudflare can be blocked by anti-bot modules installed on the origin server. Cloudflare also offers bot controls and custom WAF rules, so troubleshooting should target the specific request rather than disabling protection site-wide.
Previews may involve more than one request. The platform may fetch the HTML document first, then request the image referenced by its Open Graph metadata. If a preview has a title and description but no image, the HTML may be reachable while the image is blocked separately. Cloudflare’s static-resource protection can affect common image extensions and can block legitimate bots, including mail clients fetching static assets.

Diagnose the blocked request before changing rules
- Share a controlled test URL. Use a page whose expected title, description, canonical URL, and preview image you can confirm. Test it in the platform where the preview is missing.
- Open Cloudflare Security Events. Find the request associated with the test and note its status or response code, matched rule, user-agent, and path. Look for both the page request and any image request.
- Identify what failed. Determine whether Cloudflare denied the HTML document, the Open Graph image, or both. A title-only preview points toward checking the image request and static-resource rules separately.
- Verify the caller where possible. For Discord, compare the source IP with Discord’s published IP ranges as well as checking for the
Discordbotuser-agent. Do not make an allow decision solely because a request claims that user-agent. - Retest each platform. Discord, Slack, and other previewers may fetch differently. Check the resulting title, description, canonical URL, and image in each target platform rather than assuming one successful preview proves all fetches work.
Slack also provides workspace controls for removing domains from its blocked-preview list. If only Slack previews are affected, check whether the domain is blocked in the workspace before changing site security rules.
Fix direct access with the narrowest exception
If the logs show that a legitimate preview fetch is blocked, prefer a small, auditable exception over disabling bot protection globally. Cloudflare’s custom rules and bot controls are the relevant mechanisms. The exact rule expression depends on your zone configuration and the fields available in your Cloudflare dashboard; do not copy a broad rule that allows all bots or all traffic.

- Choose the smallest scope. Limit the exception to the relevant host and metadata-bearing paths if your site can support that design. Avoid exempting unrelated application routes or all static resources.
- Use reliable identification. Where available, verify a bot using provider-published source IP ranges in addition to the expected user-agent. User-agent text alone is easy to imitate.
- Place the exception before the blocking rule. A valid allow condition placed after a rule that already blocks the request will not help. Review rule ordering and the event log after saving.
- Keep other protections in place. Do not broadly disable anti-bot controls or WAF protections merely to make previews work. If a narrow exception cannot be made safely, consider a dedicated metadata route or the proxy design below.
- Validate page and image separately. Re-run the test and check the HTML and image paths in Security Events. Confirm that the preview now includes the expected fields, not just that the request stopped appearing as blocked.
Direct allowlisting generally has less operational complexity when the provider can be verified reliably: the chat platform reaches your site, and Cloudflare logs remain the place to observe that traffic. Its trade-off is that you need a defensible rule for each provider and any separate asset paths that must be reachable.
When a proxy helps—and what it must protect
A proxy is useful when several preview services need a stable, sanitized metadata response, or when you must keep direct access to the origin blocked. The chat service fetches a public proxy endpoint; your server fetches the permitted page, extracts only the fields needed for a preview, and returns those fields. This is an engineering pattern, not a Cloudflare-prescribed recipe. It introduces a new server-side fetch capability, so an unrestricted proxy can create serious security and resource risks.

Constrain what the proxy can fetch
- Allowlist destinations. Accept only the hostnames or URL patterns you intend to support. Reject arbitrary destinations, local addresses, private network ranges, and cloud metadata endpoints to reduce server-side request forgery risk.
- Control redirects. Either reject redirects or validate every redirect target against the same allowlist before following it. A safe initial URL can redirect somewhere unsafe.
- Set strict resource limits. Use short connect and read timeouts, a response-size cap, and limits on redirect count. Reject unsupported content types rather than buffering arbitrary responses.
- Send no user secrets. Do not forward browser cookies, authorization headers, or other credentials to the destination. Return only the title, description, canonical URL, and approved image metadata that the preview requires.
- Protect the endpoint. Rate-limit callers, cache results briefly, log failures without storing sensitive data, and avoid making the endpoint an open relay. If callers need authentication, use a mechanism appropriate to your service rather than accepting arbitrary requests.
Choose how images are handled
Returning a page’s original Open Graph image URL means the chat platform may still fetch that image directly, where Cloudflare’s static-resource rules can block it. If you instead fetch and serve an image through your proxy, apply the same destination validation, content-type checks, size limits, and caching safeguards. Only proxy images you are permitted to retrieve and redistribute. Do not assume that proxying the HTML alone solves an image-specific block.

Use direct allowlisting when provider verification and a narrow rule are practical. Use a proxy when a stable sanitized response is more important than the added complexity and you can operate the fetcher safely.

Test the result and troubleshoot common failures
Preview is still entirely missing
- Security Events show a block: inspect the exact rule, request path, and user-agent. Correct the narrow exception’s condition or ordering; do not disable unrelated protections.
- No corresponding event appears: check whether the platform can reach the public URL and whether the failure occurs outside the Cloudflare event being inspected. Confirm the shared URL is the intended public address.
- Slack alone omits it: check the workspace’s blocked-preview domain controls; site-side allowlisting cannot override a workspace block.
Text appears but the image does not
Inspect the Open Graph image URL as a separate request. Check Cloudflare static-resource protection and any rule applying to common image extensions. Confirm that the image is publicly retrievable and that the metadata points to the intended URL. If the proxy returns the original image URL, remember that the chat platform still has to fetch that URL.
The proxy returns errors or inconsistent metadata
- Timeout: reduce the allowed work per request and use explicit connect and read timeouts. Do not respond by allowing unlimited waits.
- Unexpected redirect: reject it or validate the new destination against the allowlist before following it.
- Large or unsupported response: enforce a byte cap and accept only the content types your metadata parser needs.
- Stale preview: check the proxy’s cache age and refresh policy. Chat platforms may also retain their own preview results, so a proxy cache purge alone may not force an immediate refetch.
- Request reaches a private or unintended host: stop the fetch, tighten URL and redirect validation, and review logs for attempted abuse before exposing the endpoint again.

What a proxy does not solve
A proxy cannot guarantee that every chat service will refresh a cached preview, nor can it compensate for incorrect or absent page metadata. The target page still needs accurate title, description, canonical URL, and image metadata, and each platform must be able to fetch the endpoint you expose. Treat the proxy as a controlled delivery route for metadata—not as proof that a platform has accepted or updated a preview.
