Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Short answer: first determine whether X is missing the entire link card or showing an image/domain card without headline text. Missing cards can often be traced to the HTML metadata, an unreachable image or page, or stale platform data. A card that appears without a generated headline may reflect an X presentation decision that website owners cannot reliably override. Put the headline in the post text when necessary, and judge the result in the X app or client your readers will use.
Why your headline may have disappeared
X changed the way it displays external links in October 2023. The Associated Press described the new treatment as a lead image with a link and the linked domain shown on the image, rather than a conventional headline card (Associated Press, October 5, 2023). X briefly tested small headline text again in January 2024, then removed that treatment within hours (TechCrunch, January 3, 2024).
Those documented changes explain why editing og:title or a Twitter card title does not guarantee a headline in every current X app, device or account. X controls the final card presentation. Metadata still matters for whether a card is created, what image is selected and what information the crawler can read, but it is not a promise that X will draw headline text.
Identify the exact failure before changing code
The card is completely absent
When pasting a URL produces only ordinary post text, investigate your page response, image URL, crawler access and possible stale data. This is the case where fixing the site often helps.

The card appears, but the image is missing
Check that the image metadata points to the intended asset with an absolute https:// URL. The page and image must be reachable publicly, without a login or an interstitial that blocks automated fetching.
The image/domain card appears, but no headline is shown
This may be normal X rendering rather than a broken tag. Confirm your metadata is correct once, then put the headline in the post itself instead of repeatedly changing page templates. Only the preview rendered by X can show what the tested client currently supports; a third-party simulator cannot guarantee the same result.
Inspect what your server actually sends
Use your browser’s View source command, or fetch the URL with an HTTP client, and inspect the HTML returned by the server. Do not rely solely on tags injected after load by client-side JavaScript. Confirm that the delivered document contains:
- A page title and description appropriate for the article.
- The X/Twitter card type metadata your template or CMS intends to use.
- An image URL that is absolute, uses HTTPS and points to the correct public file.
- A canonical, publicly reachable page URL.
A minimal server-rendered set of tags can look like this (adapt names to your CMS and existing template):

The important test is the final HTML response, not merely what your browser inspector shows after scripts run. If more than one SEO or social plugin emits competing title, description or image tags, remove the duplicates and inspect the resulting source again.
Verify page and image reachability
- Open the exact shared URL in a private browser window. Make sure it does not require authentication, a cookie acceptance click or a special session.
- Open the image URL directly. It should return the intended image over HTTPS, without a hotlink block, expiring signature or redirect to a login page.
- Check redirects and protections. Security middleware, bot challenges, robots policies, rate limits and firewalls can prevent a platform fetch even when a normal browser succeeds.
- Share the final canonical URL. Test the same URL that appears in your post; tracking or alternate hostnames can produce a different cached representation.
There are no verified current X-specific image dimensions, crawler thresholds or cache-expiry times you can safely treat as universal requirements. Avoid publishing a “magic” size or promising that a validator refreshes X immediately.

Test in X itself after every change
- Publish the metadata change to the live server.
- Compose a draft post in the X client your audience uses and paste the URL.
- Wait for the preview to finish loading, then classify the result: no card, missing image, or card without headline.
- If the card is correct except for headline text, add the article headline to the post text and stop treating the presentation as a metadata bug.
Preview checkers can inspect tags or simulate a crawler, which is useful for finding malformed or missing metadata. Their output is not proof of what X will render. A legacy X Business troubleshooting PDF remains indexed at X Business, but it is not a current specification and should not be used to infer exact present-day thresholds.
Fixes for the most common causes
Tags exist only after JavaScript runs
Move the social metadata into server-rendered HTML, your CMS template or an SEO plugin that emits tags in the initial response. Re-fetch the page source to verify.

Keep one authoritative set of title, description, card type and image tags. Disable duplicate fields, clear your site cache, then inspect the live response rather than the editor preview.
The image is private, blocked or redirected
Replace it with a stable public HTTPS asset. Check the direct URL from an unauthenticated session and review CDN or firewall logs for denied requests.
The URL is stale in a cache
Recheck the live HTML and compose a fresh X draft. Cached copies can differ between a preview service and X. No current official cache interval is established, so do not promise a specific wait time.
X has intentionally omitted generated headlines
If the card and image load but headline text does not, use the post text as the author-controlled fallback. Changing twitter:title repeatedly cannot force a client-side design decision.

What preview tools can—and cannot—tell you
A third-party checker is valuable for answering “what tags does this URL return?” It can reveal an empty image field, malformed URL, duplicate tags or content that appears only after JavaScript. It cannot establish that X will use the same crop, cache, card layout or headline treatment. Treat its result as a diagnostic of your page, not a guarantee of the live X interface. The practical question is always whether the draft preview in X looks right.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean image of a page while debugging or documenting a preview, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The service also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF paper and page-range controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector hiding, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. Replace the example URL with the page you want to inspect:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Keep social images and HTML fast to fetch; a slow origin increases the chance that a draft cannot build a card before you inspect it.
- Use stable image URLs rather than short-lived signed links unless your delivery system guarantees that the crawler can use them.
- When debugging, change one variable at a time—metadata, image access, then cache—so you know which fix affected the result.
- Do not equate a successful screenshot or preview checker with successful X rendering. They test page retrieval, while X decides the final card UI.
Frequently asked questions
Can I force X to show a headline with a special tag?
No reliable tag can force headline text across current X clients. You can ensure the title is present in delivered HTML, but X decides whether to display it.
Should I delete and repost an old URL?
There is no verified universal cache-expiry rule. Recheck the live response and test a new draft; reposting is not a guaranteed cache purge.

Why does a preview checker look correct while X does not?
The checker simulates or inspects metadata. X may use a different cache, fetch path or presentation, so only the X draft preview represents the tested client.
What is the fastest workaround for a headline-less card?
Write the headline in the post text alongside the URL. That text remains under your control even when the card design omits generated headlines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing from an image card to another card type restore headlines?
It may change the available layout, but no current, universal X behavior is established. Test the exact card in the X client you target rather than relying on a metadata promise.
How can I tell whether a CMS plugin or the page template owns the tags?
View the delivered source and search for each title, description and image field. The component that emits the final tags—template, SEO plugin or custom code—is the one to configure; remove duplicates elsewhere.
Is a screenshot of my page the same as an X link preview?
No. A screenshot documents the rendered page, while X separately fetches metadata and chooses its card layout. Use screenshots for page evidence, then verify the URL in an X draft.
