Browserless Review: How Good Is It for Scraping and Automation?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Browserless is a capable way to run Chromium-based scraping and automation without managing browser servers yourself, but it is not one single scraping API. Its REST endpoints handle stateless, one-request jobs; BaaS (Browsers as a Service) runs existing Puppeteer or Playwright code; and BrowserQL/BAP targets newer, more advanced workflows. It is a sensible fit for JavaScript-heavy sites and teams that need hosted browser infrastructure. It is less compelling for static pages that ordinary HTTP requests can fetch, and its real cost and success rate depend on session length, concurrency, target-site defenses, region and add-on usage.

What Browserless actually provides

Browserless is managed headless-browser infrastructure. You can connect Puppeteer or Playwright to remote browsers over WebSocket, call REST or GraphQL interfaces for bounded tasks, use BrowserQL/BAP for newer automation workflows, or deploy the software privately with Docker. Those routes solve different problems; choosing the wrong one is the most common source of frustration.

Route Best for Important limitation
REST APIs Rendered HTML, selector extraction, screenshots, PDFs, crawling, downloads, Lighthouse checks and server-side functions One stateless action per request; cookies and browser state are discarded afterward
BaaS Moving an existing Puppeteer, Playwright, chromedp or Pyppeteer script to hosted browsers Uses Chrome DevTools Protocol; Selenium/WebDriver is not supported in BaaS v2
BrowserQL/BAP New browser-automation flows where the platform’s built-in stealth or CAPTCHA features are relevant Vendor-described capabilities still need testing against your permitted targets
Private or self-hosted Deployment and network control You retain browser operations and maintenance responsibilities

Browserless describes persistent browser sessions, browser agents, proxy and CAPTCHA-related workflows as supported use cases. Those descriptions are not a guarantee that every protected website will permit access.

Which interface should you choose?

Use REST for one request and one result

The REST path is the shortest route to a rendered result. It fits a product page screenshot, PDF generation, CSS-selector extraction or a crawl where each URL can be handled independently. A response ends the browser session, so you cannot rely on cookies, local storage or a logged-in state in a later call. A normal REST request also cannot click through a multi-step flow and then continue scraping.

For JavaScript-heavy pages, REST is more useful than a plain HTTP client because a browser executes scripts before returning the result. It remains subject to timeouts, bot checks and interactive CAPTCHAs.

Use BaaS when you already have browser code

BaaS normally requires changing the local browser launch call to Browserless’s remote endpoint while leaving most Puppeteer or Playwright logic intact. This is the least disruptive option for an established test suite, authenticated workflow or scraper that already handles clicks, forms and pagination. Compatible CDP-oriented clients include Puppeteer, Playwright, chromedp and Pyppeteer. Match the endpoint and protocol to the client; a WebDriver-based Selenium script is not a supported BaaS v2 path.

Use BrowserQL/BAP for new, more involved automation

Browserless positions BrowserQL/BAP for browser automation with features such as stealth and CAPTCHA handling. Treat that as a reason to evaluate it, not proof that a particular target will work. Measure completion on websites you are authorized to access, and document which proxy or stealth options were enabled.

Choose private deployment when control outweighs convenience

Browserless documents private managed deployments and Docker self-hosting. This can help with network placement, data handling or internal compliance. It does not eliminate Chromium updates, capacity planning, observability or failure recovery; it moves those responsibilities to your team or private operator.

Getting started with a scraping job

The following pattern is deliberately simple: request a rendered page, select the data you need, and save the response. Check the current Browserless documentation for authentication parameters and endpoint-specific options before deploying.

  1. Define the job. Decide whether you need HTML, structured selector output, a screenshot, PDF or a stateful interaction. If the flow includes login, clicks or a cart, skip directly to BaaS or BrowserQL.
  2. Pick the nearest region. Browserless recommends using a region close to the target sites because distance affects latency; its quickstart gives US West as an example and also documents European operation. No universal latency figure is established, so measure from your own workload.
  3. Set explicit waits and timeouts. JavaScript applications may need a selector wait or network-idle condition. Keep a maximum timeout so a broken page cannot consume a session indefinitely.
  4. Close every stateful session. In Puppeteer or Playwright, put cleanup in a finally block. Browserless warns that abandoned sessions can remain open until timeout and continue consuming billable time.
  5. Record the outcome. Log URL, region, browser client, duration, HTTP status, extracted-item count and error text. This lets you distinguish a target-site block from an infrastructure or selector failure.

Browserless with Puppeteer and Playwright

With BaaS, your application still controls navigation and extraction while Browserless supplies the remote browser. A minimal Puppeteer shape is:

const browser = await puppeteer.connect({ browserWSEndpoint: process.env.BROWSERLESS_WS });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2', timeout: 60000 });
  const title = await page.title();
  console.log(title);
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

For Playwright, use the client method that connects to a Chromium DevTools endpoint supplied by your Browserless account. Keep the same lifecycle discipline: create a context, navigate with a bounded timeout, collect data, then close the browser in finally. The exact connection URL and authentication format are account-specific and can change, so use the current BaaS documentation.

What Browserless can and cannot scrape

JavaScript-rendered pages

A real browser can execute client-side rendering, wait for lazy content and interact with controls that a simple HTTP request cannot. That is Browserless’s strongest technical rationale. You still need selectors that match the current site and waits that reflect its loading behavior.

Bot protection and CAPTCHAs

Browserless documents stealth, proxy and CAPTCHA-related capabilities, especially around BAP/BrowserQL. Its REST documentation also warns that advanced fingerprinting and interactive CAPTCHAs can block requests. Do not interpret a successful demo on one site as a general bypass. Follow the target’s terms, robots guidance and applicable law, and test only permitted workloads.

Stateful flows

REST calls do not preserve cookies or other state. Login, pagination driven by clicks, checkout-like sequences and any workflow requiring a remembered session belong in BaaS or BrowserQL. Persist only the state you are entitled to handle, and protect credentials and cookies in your own application.

Pricing and the cost model

Browserless prices usage in Units. The pricing page defines one Unit as up to 30 seconds of browser time per browser connection. A longer session consumes another Unit for each additional 30 seconds, and reconnecting starts a new browser connection. Add-ons listed on the pricing page include 6 Units per MB for residential proxy traffic, 2 Units per MB for datacenter proxy traffic and 10 Units per successful CAPTCHA solve.

Cost driver Why it matters How to control it
Browser duration Each connection is metered in 30-second blocks Use precise waits, avoid unnecessary navigation and set timeouts
Reconnects Each reconnect is a new billable connection Keep a session alive for a coherent flow when appropriate
Proxy traffic Residential and datacenter traffic consume different Unit rates Select the least costly proxy that meets the permitted use case
CAPTCHA solving Successful solves consume 10 Units each Do not enable solving unless the workflow requires it and is authorized
Abandoned sessions Open sessions can run until timeout Always close in cleanup code and monitor duration

The pricing page showed a Prototyping plan at $25 per month when accessed in 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a guaranteed current price. Verify included Units, concurrency, overage rules and enterprise terms on the live Browserless pricing page before budgeting. A per-page estimate is not meaningful without a defined URL set, session duration, proxy mix, CAPTCHA rate and reconnect behavior.

Reliability, latency and operations

Browserless’s hosted model removes much of the work of provisioning Chrome processes, but it does not remove application-level failure modes. A target can change its DOM, return a bot challenge, stall third-party resources or require a region you did not select. Use retries only for transient failures; repeated retries against a deterministic block increase cost without improving the result.

  • Capture timing and error categories separately from extraction results.
  • Use idempotent jobs so a retry cannot duplicate downstream records.
  • Limit concurrency to what your plan and target sites can tolerate.
  • Cache stable pages where policy permits instead of reopening browsers.
  • Pin selectors and add an alert when the extracted item count unexpectedly falls to zero.

No independent performance, uptime or comparative success-rate result is established here. Any serious purchase decision should measure a representative sample and report date, plan, region, browser client, target sites, selectors, sample size and enabled proxy or stealth features.

Troubleshooting common failures

The request times out

Check whether the page is waiting on a never-ending network request or a selector that never appears. Replace an overly broad network-idle wait with a specific selector, increase the timeout only when the page genuinely needs it, and confirm the chosen region is sensible for the target.

HTML is empty or missing client-rendered data

You may be reading the initial document before the application renders. Wait for the content selector, verify that JavaScript errors are not stopping the app, and use a stateful browser route if the data appears only after interaction.

A CAPTCHA or bot page is returned

REST is not a guaranteed bypass. Test the documented BAP/BrowserQL or proxy options only for an authorized workflow, and record the challenge rate. If the site disallows automation, stop rather than escalating evasion.

Authentication disappears between calls

That is expected for independent REST requests. Keep the login and subsequent actions in one BaaS or BrowserQL session, or use an officially supported token-based endpoint.

Costs are higher than expected

Inspect connection duration, reconnect count, proxy megabytes, CAPTCHA solves and sessions that were not closed. A 30-second boundary can also turn a small timing increase into another Unit.

Selenium code will not connect

BaaS v2 uses Chrome DevTools Protocol and does not support Selenium/WebDriver. Port the workflow to Puppeteer, Playwright or another compatible CDP client, or use a REST endpoint for a stateless task.

Or skip the browser setup

For screenshot-only work, ScreenshotNeo is a simpler alternative: one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, with options for full-page capture, lazy images, CSS selectors, waits, custom JavaScript, cookies, headers, device presets and more. Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients take screenshots.

cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Verdict: how good is Browserless?

Browserless is good when the job genuinely needs a browser: JavaScript rendering, interaction, authenticated state or a Puppeteer/Playwright codebase you want to run remotely. REST is efficient for isolated rendered tasks, while BaaS and BrowserQL handle persistent flows. It is not automatically the best tool for static pages, and neither stealth features nor CAPTCHA tooling guarantees access to protected sites. Before committing, model Units from real session timings and run a documented pilot against your permitted targets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Browserless run a multi-step login and scrape flow?

Yes, but use a stateful BaaS or BrowserQL session rather than separate REST calls, because REST responses do not retain cookies or browser state.

Is Browserless self-hosting free of operational work?

No. Docker or private deployment gives more control, but your team still owns capacity, updates, monitoring and browser failure recovery.

What should I measure in a Browserless pilot?

Measure completion rate, latency, browser duration, Unit consumption, selector stability and failure causes across representative permitted URLs, while recording plan, region, client and enabled proxy or stealth settings.
