Put one shared Playwright suite behind projects that describe browser and test variations, then place each project’s workers or hosted browsers in the required geographies through your CI or browser provider. Locale, timezone, and geolocation settings change browser-visible behavior; they do not move network execution.
This design gives you comparable results for Europe, North America, or Asia-Pacific while keeping sessions isolated and data flows explicit.
What “multi-region” means in browser automation
A regional run has two independent dimensions:
- Execution geography: the machine or hosted browser that opens the site, resolves DNS, connects to APIs, and receives responses. Its deployment location determines the network origin.
- Browser emulation: context settings such as locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme. These influence JavaScript APIs, formatting, language, and location prompts inside the page.
Setting locale: 'de-DE' or timezoneId: 'Europe/Berlin' does not make a US-based worker connect from Germany. To test geo-fenced content, latency, or regional access controls, provision the runner or hosted browser in the target region. Use emulation in addition to—not instead of—that placement.
Use projects as the configuration matrix
Playwright projects are logical groups of tests sharing configuration. They are a practical way to run one suite against multiple browsers, devices, environments, and browser-visible settings. A project name documents intent, but it does not place a process in a physical region; your CI routing or browser provider must do that.

Run one project with npx playwright test --project=eu-chromium, or run the matrix with npx playwright test. The test code remains shared; only the project configuration changes.
Keep region placement outside the test file
Use your CI system’s labels, queues, self-hosted runner groups, or managed-browser region selector to send eu-chromium to a European worker and apac-webkit to an Asia-Pacific worker. A simple pattern is one job per region, each setting PLAYWRIGHT_PROJECT, BASE_URL, credentials, and artifact destination. Treat this as an implementation pattern, not a Playwright requirement: the framework does not schedule machines by geography.
Provision runners or hosted browsers in each geography
Self-managed regional runners
Install the same Node.js, Playwright package, browser binaries, fonts, and operating-system dependencies in each runner pool. Pin the Playwright version and browser installation in the image so a European run is comparable with a US run. Give each pool a stable label such as region-eu and route only the intended project there.
- Advantages: direct control of network egress, internal services, secrets, browser versions, and artifact storage.
- Costs: you own patching, capacity, autoscaling, browser crashes, observability, and cross-region failover.
Managed browser infrastructure
A managed service can supply hosted browsers, scaling, debugging, and regional capacity. Verify all of the following before committing:
- That the required browser engines and branded channels are available in every target geography.
- Where page data, run metadata, traces, videos, and screenshots are stored and whether they cross regions.
- How the service pins Playwright and browser versions, and whether remote connections require a matching client version.
- Whether the browser can reach private endpoints, allow-listed IPs, and regional DNS zones.
- How concurrency, quotas, retries, and artifact retention are charged and controlled.
Microsoft describes Playwright Workspaces as a fully managed cloud browser platform for testing, browser workflows, and AI-agent interactions. Its documentation currently lists seven workspace regions: Australia East, East Asia, East US, Japan East, Switzerland North, West Europe, and West US 3. The list is service-specific and can change, so check the current availability before deployment. Microsoft also states that customer data is not stored or processed outside the deployed workspace region; with regional affinity, metadata moves from the hosted browser region to the workspace region. Workspace data, including run metadata and artifacts, is encrypted at rest with Microsoft-managed keys. These statements apply to that service, not to managed browser providers generally.
Connect to remote browsers safely
When a provider returns a Playwright WebSocket endpoint, connect with the matching Playwright client:
Rank #2
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.connect(process.env.PLAYWRIGHT_WS_ENDPOINT);
const context = await browser.newContext({ locale: 'en-GB' });
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.test', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
console.log(await page.title());
await context.close();
await browser.close();
Playwright requires compatible major and minor versions between the connecting client and the Playwright instance that launched the browser. Pin both sides and upgrade them together. CDP attachment is a fallback, not an equivalent: it is Chromium-only and has lower fidelity than the Playwright protocol connection.
Isolate users, cookies, and regional state
The Playwright test runner creates a fresh browser context for each test by default. Preserve that isolation when regions run concurrently: never reuse a context or storage-state file across users unless the sharing is deliberate.

Multiple independent users in one scenario
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('buyer and admin remain isolated', async ({ browser }) => {
const buyer = await browser.newContext({ locale: 'en-US' });
const admin = await browser.newContext({ locale: 'de-DE' });
const buyerPage = await buyer.newPage();
const adminPage = await admin.newPage();
await buyerPage.goto('/shop');
await adminPage.goto('/admin');
await expect(buyerPage).toHaveURL(/shop/);
await expect(adminPage).toHaveURL(/admin/);
await buyer.close();
await admin.close();
});
Keep authentication state, proxy credentials, geolocation permissions, and downloaded files scoped to the project and region. Name artifacts with region, project, worker, and retry identifiers so parallel runs cannot overwrite one another.
Make regional results comparable
Control variables that are not part of the experiment:
- Use the same commit, test data version, feature flags, viewport, device scale factor, and timeout policy.
- Record the runner region, public egress address, browser engine and version, Playwright version, locale, timezone, and geolocation in the test report.
- Capture response status, redirects, console errors, failed requests, and trace files for failures.
- Separate expected regional differences (currency, language, tax, inventory) from defects. Assert each intentionally rather than comparing complete HTML snapshots.
- Repeat transient failures with a bounded retry policy, but retain the first failure so retries do not hide regional instability.
Network and application edge cases
Geo-DNS can return different hosts, CDNs can serve different content, and a target may block cloud IP ranges. A geolocation value in the browser does not change the source IP seen by the server. If a site uses IP plus browser coordinates, configure both through the regional runner and context settings. For private applications, establish private connectivity in every runner pool and verify that identical hostnames resolve as intended.
Data residency and artifact flow
Map every data movement: page requests, uploaded test data, cookies, traces, videos, screenshots, logs, and provider metadata. Store artifacts in a region appropriate to your policy, apply retention limits, and redact tokens or personal data before upload. A hosted browser’s physical region and the workspace or control-plane region may differ; ask the provider where each class of data is processed, not only where the browser VM runs.

Reliability, scaling, and cost controls
Capacity
Estimate concurrency per region from the slowest workflow and the provider or runner limit. Queue excess work rather than starting unbounded browsers, which can exhaust CPU, memory, file descriptors, or outbound connections. Warm images and browser binaries reduce startup variance, while a clean context per test prevents state leakage.
Retries and health checks
Retry only failures classified as infrastructure or transient network errors. Do not retry assertion failures indefinitely. Run a small regional smoke test after deploying a runner image; check DNS, certificate validation, authentication, downloads, and access to internal dependencies before releasing the full suite.
Cost model
There is no provider-neutral performance or price figure established for this architecture. Compare runner or browser-minute charges, concurrency, egress, storage, observability, and engineering time. A cheaper browser session can cost more if it requires extensive self-managed scaling or cross-region artifact transfer.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The page shows the right language, but geo-blocking still occurs”
Cause: locale or geolocation was emulated, while the worker’s IP remained in another country. Fix: route the job to a runner or hosted browser deployed in the target geography, then retain the browser settings for language and coordinate behavior.

Cause: different DNS, firewall allow-lists, private routing, or certificates. Fix: test name resolution and TLS from that runner, add its egress or private route, and confirm the same trust store and environment variables are installed.
“Remote connection reports an incompatible version”
Cause: the client and launching Playwright instances have mismatched major or minor versions. Fix: pin the dependency and provider image to compatible versions and upgrade them as one change.
“CDP works for Chromium but not WebKit or Firefox”
Cause: CDP attachment is Chromium-only and lower fidelity. Fix: use a Playwright WebSocket connection for supported engines, or run the browser locally on the regional worker.
“Tests contaminate one another”
Cause: reused contexts, shared storage state, or artifact paths. Fix: create a context per test or user, generate region-specific state files, and include a unique run identifier in output paths.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF without requiring you to install or place a browser in each region. Use it when your regional task is producing consistent page images rather than interacting through a long workflow.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the parameter reference and options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. It can load lazy images, capture one CSS-selected element, emulate dark mode and 12 device presets, set any viewport and retina scale, create PDFs with paper size, margins, orientation, and page ranges, render HTML/CSS, run custom JavaScript, click before capture, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, hide selectors, block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types, set headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation, use transparent backgrounds, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed public-image links, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per call, and expose usage and OpenAPI endpoints. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease migration.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start.

Can one Playwright project represent several physical regions?
Yes, if your CI submits that project to different regional worker pools. The project itself only defines test configuration; placement comes from the runner or browser service.
Should I use browser geolocation without permission?
Grant the geolocation permission when the application requests it. Otherwise the page may correctly behave as though location access was denied.
Which browsers can Playwright automate?
Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, and branded Chrome or Edge channels. Confirm that the selected channel, operating system, version, and regional service are available together.
Is a managed workspace automatically compliant for every country?
No. A provider’s residency statement is service-specific. Review your legal and contractual requirements, the exact workspace region, metadata flow, and artifact storage before processing regulated data.
Frequently Asked Questions
