For recurring or bulk captures, store each page URL in Airtable and use an automation with a screenshot API to save the result to an attachment field.
Choose the right capture method
| Method | Best for | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Airtable Web Clipper | Occasional, manual captures while viewing a page | Google Chrome, an Airtable extension configured for your table, and an attachment field |
| Automation and screenshot API | Capturing URLs when records are created or updated, or building a repeatable workflow | A URL field, an attachment field, an Airtable automation, a script, and a screenshot provider |
The Web Clipper is interactive and simple, but requires a person to open the page and capture it. API automation takes more setup and may involve separate provider terms or charges, but lets you define capture settings and run captures repeatedly. Airtable documents the Web Clipper for paid plans; check your current plan and extension availability before building around it. [Airtable Web Clipper documentation]
Capture a website screenshot with Airtable’s Web Clipper
- Open the Airtable base, then select Tools → Extensions → Add an extension.
- Search for web clipper, add it, and configure a clip action for the table where you want the screenshot saved.
- Add or select an Attachment field for the image. Airtable’s clipper can add a selected screenshot, a page screenshot, or an image from the page.
- In Google Chrome, open the webpage you want to capture and click the Web Clipper icon.
- Choose the configured clip action, select the relevant capture option, and finish by choosing Add record.
Selected area, whole page, or image
- Add screenshot: Capture a rectangle you select on the page. Use it when only a chart, product image, or specific section matters.
- Add page screenshot: Capture the page rather than selecting a rectangle. Choose this for a record of the full page.
- Add image from page: Save an image already present on the webpage.
Airtable says its Web Clipper browser extension can only be used when accessing Airtable in Google Chrome. The extension is documented as available on paid plans. Owners and Creators can create, delete, and modify extensions; Editors can edit existing extension configuration. Confirm permissions with your workspace owner if you cannot add or configure the extension. [Airtable Web Clipper documentation]
The clipper can also prefill record values such as the page URL, title, selected text, and values from CSS selectors. These can help associate the capture with its source, but the screenshot itself belongs in an attachment field.

Automatically save screenshots to Airtable records
For a repeated workflow, give each row a page URL and an attachment field for its screenshot. An Airtable automation can pass the URL and record ID to a Run a script action, call a screenshot service, and update the same record with the resulting image URL. Airtable documents using fetch() for external calls in automation scripts. [Airtable integration guide]
Prepare the table
- Create a URL field to hold the page address.
- Create a Screenshot field with the Attachment type.
- Optionally add status or error fields so a failed capture is visible instead of silently leaving an empty attachment.
Configure the automation
- Create an automation triggered when a record is created or updated. If available in your workflow, add a condition requiring the URL field to be non-empty.
- Add a Run a script action, and define script inputs named
urlandrecordIdmapped to the URL field and triggering record ID. - In the script, request a screenshot from your chosen provider using the URL and desired capture settings.
- Update the triggering record’s Screenshot attachment field with the image URL returned by the provider.
- Test with a single record, then verify that the attachment opens and shows the intended page before enabling the workflow for a larger set.
A concrete third-party example from Allscreenshots uses fullPage: true, a 1280 × 800 viewport, and blockAds: true, then writes result.screenshotUrl to Airtable’s attachment field. Its tutorial also demonstrates fullPage: false for viewport-only capture and darkMode: true for a dark-mode image. Those are settings in that provider’s example, not universal Airtable options; check the provider’s current API documentation for endpoint, authentication, supported parameters, and response format. Full-page and viewport captures
Use a viewport capture when the visible area is the evidence you need, such as the current hero section or an above-the-fold layout. Use full-page capture for an archival record or a portfolio entry that should include content below the fold. Long pages, lazy-loaded images, and interactive content can change what appears in a capture; check the provider’s options for scrolling, waiting, and page rendering rather than assuming every API handles them identically.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot or PDF from one GET request, which you can use in an Airtable automation script. Before sending an image URL to an Airtable attachment field, check that it is reachable by Airtable and that the response is a suitable image. The example below saves the returned WebP file locally; in an Airtable workflow, use the response or a signed image URL according to your setup. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

Bulk-capture URLs already in Airtable
For a one-time backfill, an external script can page through Airtable records, request a screenshot for each URL, and update the corresponding attachment field. Airtable’s Web API returns up to 100 records per page and provides an offset for retrieving the next page. Its documented rate limit is 5 requests per second per base. Monthly API-call limits listed by Airtable are 1,000 for Free, 100,000 for Team, and unlimited for Business and Enterprise, subject to other limits; these figures and plan terms should be checked against current Airtable documentation before a large run. - Fetch the first page of records containing a URL, retaining each record ID and URL.
- Request a screenshot for each valid URL and update that record’s attachment field with the returned image reference.
- If the response includes an offset, fetch the next page and continue until no offset remains.
- Throttle requests to stay within Airtable’s per-base limit, and track failures so you can retry them without repeating successful captures.
Airtable also documents incoming webhooks for receiving data and the Web API for externally hosted or scheduled jobs. These options can fit a workflow where capture runs outside Airtable, but they require you to manage authentication, retries, and the association between each screenshot and its record. Common problems and fixes
- The Web Clipper icon or capture action is missing: Confirm that Airtable is open in Google Chrome, that the extension has been added to the base, and that you have the required workspace role and plan access.
- The capture does not appear in the record: Make sure the clip action targets the intended table and an Attachment field, then check that you selected Add record to finish.
- The automation runs but no screenshot is attached: Verify that the script receives the correct URL and record ID, that the provider call succeeds, and that the attachment update uses the provider’s actual image URL rather than an unrelated response field.
- The image is a blank page or incomplete: The target may need more rendering time, may load content only after scrolling, or may block automated access. Try the provider’s wait or full-page options where available, and inspect its response before retrying.
- A bulk run slows or errors: Reduce request frequency and honor Airtable’s per-base API rate limit. Keep a record of failed URLs and retry only those records.
- Provider settings in an example do not work: Parameters and result fields vary by service. Use the selected provider’s current documentation for authentication, capture options, and output URL format.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Airtable take a screenshot automatically when a record is added?
Yes. A record-created automation can pass its URL and record ID to a script, call a screenshot API, and write the returned image URL to an attachment field.
