Verify the rendered font first, wait for the desired font state, then standardize viewport, device scale, browser, OS and capture mode. Display-smoothing tweaks are secondary and platform-specific.
Find the cause before changing CSS
Font rendering is the result of several layers: CSS selects a family and weight, the browser resolves that selection to a font file, the operating system rasterizes glyphs, and the screenshot tool samples those pixels. A failure at any layer can change letter shapes, spacing, line wrapping and apparent sharpness.
1. The web font never arrived
Open DevTools and inspect the page’s font requests. Confirm that the expected @font-face rule points to an accessible file, that the response is successful, and that the requested weight and style actually exist. A missing 600 weight, for example, can make the browser synthesize or substitute a different face.
2. A fallback or local font is winning
In Chrome DevTools, inspect the element’s rendered fonts rather than relying on the CSS family name. DevTools can disable local fonts; refresh with that option enabled to reveal whether a locally installed face was masking the network font. Local and network versions can have different metrics even when their names match, producing different wrapping and apparent weight.

3. The page was captured between font states
During loading, a browser may show blank text or a system fallback before replacing it with the web font. The replacement can move content and alter the screenshot. Decide whether you need the loading state or the final face. For a visual baseline, the final face is normally the useful target; for documenting loading behavior, capture the fallback deliberately.
4. Pixels were sampled differently
Screenshot dimensions and edge quality depend on CSS pixels, device pixels and the tool’s output scale. A one-pixel-per-CSS-pixel image is not equivalent to a device-pixel image from a high-DPI context. Compare images only when viewport, device scale factor and screenshot scale match.
Verify the actual font in DevTools
- Open the page in the target browser and press
F12(or choose More tools → Developer tools). - In Elements, select a text node and inspect its computed
font-family,font-weight,font-styleand size. - Use the rendered-fonts section to see the file and face that painted the glyphs. Check every important weight, not just the body face.
- In Network, filter by
fontand reload with the cache disabled. Look for failed requests, redirects, CORS errors, incorrect MIME types and unexpectedly large files. - Temporarily enable DevTools’ disable-local-fonts rendering option and reload. If the screenshot changes, your machine was using a local font rather than the web-delivered file.
Keep the family declaration explicit and complete. Define separate @font-face entries for the weights you use, use the correct font-style, and ensure the URL is the same one that your production page serves. Do not diagnose a rasterization problem while the wrong font is still being painted.
Wait for a deliberate font state
Use the Font Loading API in automation so the capture does not race the font request. A robust page-side check is:

await document.fonts.load('600 16px "Inter"');
});
Replace the family and weights with those used by the page. This confirms that the browser has finished its font-loading work; it does not repair a bad URL or missing face. You can also wait for a visible, font-dependent element and then take the screenshot.

Understand font-display
font-display controls what users see while a web font loads. A system fallback may appear quickly and then be replaced, causing layout shift; another setting can keep text invisible briefly. Neither is universally “sharper.” Choose based on whether early text visibility or an immediate final-face baseline matters, and capture the state you intend to document.
Control scale and dimensions
Playwright distinguishes scale: "css" (one output pixel per CSS pixel) from scale: "device" (one output pixel per device pixel). The latter can produce images twice as wide and tall on a device-scale-factor-2 context. Playwright’s deviceScaleFactor emulates the device pixel ratio and defaults to 1.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'baseline.png', fullPage: true, scale: 'css' });
await browser.close();
For a high-DPI baseline, set the same device scale factor on every run and use scale: "device". Record the resulting pixel dimensions. Do not compare a 1440×900 CSS-scale capture with a 2880×1800 device-scale capture and call the difference a font-quality change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Playwright identifies host OS, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source and headless mode as variables that can affect rendering. Keep these stable for baseline generation and verification.
- Pin the browser build and automation package version.
- Use the same operating-system image and installed fonts; ideally run captures in a fixed container or CI image.
- Keep viewport dimensions, device scale factor, screenshot scale, color scheme and zoom unchanged.
- Use the same headless or headed mode. Do not mix a developer laptop baseline with a Linux CI baseline without accepting raster differences.
- Wait for fonts and other layout-changing resources before capture.
- Save the configuration beside each baseline so a future mismatch is diagnosable.
If a page animates text, caret, canvas content or transitions, disable or freeze those effects for comparisons. This prevents temporal differences from being mistaken for font changes.

Windows Chrome: address display fuzziness carefully
When Chrome text looks fuzzy on a Windows display, Chrome Help recommends running the Windows ClearType Text Tuner and reviewing the Smooth edges of screen fonts appearance setting, then reopening Chrome as directed. These steps affect how you see the browser and are not a universal fix for pixels already written to a screenshot file. Validate the saved image at 100% zoom in an image viewer before changing CSS.
Avoid treating -webkit-font-smoothing as a cross-platform sharpness switch. Screenshot output support and effect vary by browser and operating system. Test any such rule on every target environment, and remove it if it merely makes one display look different from the baseline.

Capture with a controlled script
The following script waits for the final fonts, fixes the rendering context and records a deterministic full-page image. Install Playwright with npm install -D playwright and install its browser binaries as documented by the package.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = process.argv[2] || 'https://example.com';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
colorScheme: 'light'
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.ready;
for (const face of ['400 16px "Inter"', '600 16px "Inter"']) {
try { await document.fonts.load(face); } catch (_) {}
}
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'website.png', fullPage: true, animations: 'disabled', scale: 'css' });
await browser.close();
Change the family strings to match your page. If the site intentionally demonstrates fallback text, omit the font wait and document that choice instead.
Common failures and fixes
“The screenshot is sharp locally but different in CI.”
Compare OS, browser build, installed fonts, headless mode, viewport and device scale factor. A missing local font or different rasterizer is more likely than a CSS regression.

“Text is clipped or wraps differently.”
Inspect the rendered font and weight, then check whether the capture happened before the web font replaced its fallback. Verify that the same viewport and zoom are used.
“The font request succeeds but the wrong face appears.”
Use the rendered-fonts inspection and disable-local-fonts test. Check that the requested weight/style maps to a real @font-face entry rather than a synthesized face.
“Increasing device scale factor made the file huge.”
That is expected when using device-pixel output. Use scale: "css" for compact, CSS-sized baselines, or retain device scale deliberately and keep it consistent.
“A CSS smoothing rule changed one machine only.”
Remove the assumption that it is portable. Re-test on the target browser and OS; control the environment instead of depending on an undocumented smoothing difference.
“The page never reaches the final font.”
Inspect failed or blocked font requests, CORS and Content Security Policy messages, and the server’s font MIME type. Fix delivery first; increasing screenshot delays cannot load a file the browser cannot fetch.

A compact diagnostic checklist
- Rendered family, weight and style match the intended CSS.
- Font requests succeed and are not replaced by local fonts.
- The chosen fallback or final-font state is intentional.
- Viewport, device scale factor and screenshot scale are recorded.
- Browser, OS, hardware assumptions and headless mode are stable.
- The saved file is inspected at 100% zoom, not judged only through a scaled preview.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use a higher device scale factor to make fonts sharper?
Only when your output requires device-pixel dimensions. It changes raster sampling and file size; it cannot correct a missing or incorrect font. Choose one scale deliberately and keep it consistent.
Can a monitor upgrade improve the screenshot file?
No. A display can change how you perceive the image, but it does not alter pixels already rendered into the screenshot.
Is a fallback font always an error?
No. It is valid when you are documenting the loading state or have intentionally selected a system stack. It is a problem when you expect a specific web font and need stable visual output.
