Build a scenario by defining the event, mapping fields, validating inputs, routing variants, testing each module, and scheduling the finished workflow. The right center of gravity depends on the job: Figma is better for review and developer handoff; Canva is better for repeatable branded asset production.
What a Make design scenario does
Make describes itself as a no-code integration platform for connecting apps and transferring data between them. In practice, a scenario is a visual workflow made from modules. A trigger supplies a bundle of data, subsequent modules transform or validate it, and final modules create an asset, update a record or notify a person.
A reliable design automation has four parts:
- Event or source: a new or changed row, Figma comment, file update or scheduled run.
- Rules: filters for status, brand, locale, channel or approval state.
- Actions: create or export a Canva design, post a Figma comment, create a task or upload a file.
- Control data: an explicit status, source ID and output URL that prevent duplicate work.
Choose Figma or Canva as the workflow center

Automate Figma review and handoff
Make’s Figma integration includes triggers for watching file comments and watching file updates after editing stops. Its actions include listing comments, file version history, project files and projects, posting comments, and making authorized API calls.
Scenario: file update to engineering handoff
- Create a new scenario and add the Figma “watch file updates” trigger. Connect the Figma account and select the file or project scope available in your account.
- Add a filter that checks the relevant project, file key or an explicit design status. Filtering early prevents unrelated edits from creating work.
- Add your project-management module and map the file name, URL, editor, version and update time into a task. Include the Figma file key as an external ID.
- Add a notification module for the developer channel. Include the task URL and the exact Figma file link.
- Run the scenario with a representative edit, inspect every mapped field, then schedule it. Keep the last processed version or event identifier so retries do not create duplicate tasks.
Scenario: comment to review task
Use the “watch file comments” trigger, then route by comment text, author or a review label. One branch can post an acknowledgement in Figma; another can create a task for a copy, accessibility or engineering owner. Add a status field such as open, assigned or resolved and filter out already resolved comments.

Automate Canva asset production
The documented Canva modules include Create a Design, Import a Design and Export a Design. Make also documents “Autofill a Design from a Brand Template”; Canva requires the applicable Enterprise capability for its brand templates API. If that capability is unavailable, create or import designs using the options exposed by your Canva connection instead of assuming autofill is enabled.
Google Sheets to Canva to Google Drive
This pattern turns structured rows into stored assets and works for certificates, social cards, product graphics and localized variants.
- In Google Sheets, define stable columns such as
record_id,headline,subtitle,image_url,locale,format,statusandoutput_url. Keep one row per asset request. - Add a Sheets trigger for a new or changed row. Filter for
status = readyand require the fields needed by the template. - Choose Canva “Create a Design” for a new design, or the brand-template autofill module when your Canva account has the required Enterprise access. Map text and image inputs deliberately; do not rely on column order.
- Add “Export a Design” and select the required format. Use a router when one row must produce multiple sizes or channels.
- Upload each exported file to the approved Google Drive folder. Build a deterministic filename from
record_id, locale and format. - Write the Drive URL, Canva design identifier, completion time and a final status back to Sheets.
For changed rows, compare a source version or content hash before creating a new design. If the row is incomplete, route it to an error branch that records the missing columns rather than silently producing a partial graphic.

Build any scenario in a safe order
- Define the outcome: name the final asset, approval or handoff event before selecting modules.
- Select a starting point: search Make scenario templates for a close pattern, or start with a blank scenario. Templates can be run immediately, edited, expanded, shared and saved for reuse; Make says its public templates cover over 7,500 use cases.
- Connect accounts: authorize only the apps and folders the scenario needs.
- Normalize fields: use stable names, explicit status values and a unique source ID.
- Validate: add filters for required text, image availability, supported formats and approval state.
- Route variants: use routers for brand, locale, channel, aspect ratio or output type.
- Test progressively: run individual modules first, then the complete path with normal, missing and duplicate records.
- Schedule and monitor: choose an interval that matches the business need, inspect execution history and revise mappings when source fields change.
Prevent duplicates, bad assets and approval leaks
- Store the originating Figma event, Sheets record ID or Canva design ID in the destination.
- Make approval state explicit; never infer approval from a free-form comment alone.
- Use a “processing” state before export and “complete” only after the Drive upload succeeds.
- Send failures to a review queue containing the source URL, module name and error text.
- Separate production and test folders, templates and credentials.
- For multiple outputs, give every branch its own expected format and filename.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Each module adds an external request and another possible failure point. Reduce unnecessary work by filtering at the trigger, avoiding exports until validation passes, and caching source decisions in your row or task record. Batch only when the receiving app and your approval process support it; a batch that is hard to trace can cost more time than individual assets.
Schedule review-heavy Figma workflows frequently enough for the team, but use slower intervals for bulk Canva production when immediate delivery is unnecessary. Test with representative images and long text: template overflow, missing fonts, unsupported image URLs and permission changes often appear only with real records.
Troubleshooting common failures
No trigger events arrive
Confirm the connection, selected file or sheet, trigger scope and scenario schedule. Make a new qualifying edit after activation; historical events may not be replayed automatically.

Duplicate tasks or graphics
Add an idempotency key based on the source record and version, search the destination before creation, and mark the source as processing before expensive actions.
Canva autofill is unavailable
Check whether the Canva account has the Enterprise capability required for the brand templates API. If not, use the Create, Import and Export modules available to your account or obtain an approved template workflow from your Canva administrator.
Exported file is blank or incomplete
Verify that mapped fields are not empty, the image URL is reachable by the connected service, and the selected design format matches the template. Test a single record with short text and a known image before expanding the route.

Figma comment creates the wrong task
Inspect the raw comment bundle, then tighten filters around file, project, author, label or status. Store the Figma comment identifier so a retry updates the existing task instead of creating another.
Scenario stops after a permission error
Reconnect the affected app, confirm folder and project access, and test that module alone. Keep credentials separated between test and production scenarios so a permission change is visible.

Frequently asked questions
Can one scenario create several design sizes?
Yes. Add a router after the validated source data and give each branch its own Canva format, export settings and destination filename.
Should approvals live in Figma or Sheets?
Keep approval closest to the work: Figma comments or status for file review, and a structured table status for row-driven production. Mirror the final state to the other system only when the team needs it.
When should I use a template instead of a blank scenario?
Use a public template when its trigger, field model and destination resemble your process. Start blank when your approval rules, identifiers or output branches differ materially.
